The Supreme Court on Friday adjourned till November 16 the hearing on the lawsuit filed by the West Bengal government which alleged that the CBI is going ahead with the investigation in post-poll violence cases without securing the pre-requisite nod from the state under the law. A bench of justices L Nageswara Rao and B R Gavai noted that the Centre has filed a counter-affidavit in response to the suit filed by the state, and said it will hear the matter on a non-miscellaneous day. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for West Bengal, sought a specific date since the CBI is proceeding with the FIRs. “We’ll have it on November 16. Parties may file a rejoinder and additional document if any,” the bench said. The West Bengal government, in its original civil suit under Article 131 of the Constitution, has referred to the provisions of the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act 1946, and said the central agency has been proceeding with investigations and filing FIRs without getting … [Read more...] about SC Adjourns Hearing on West Bengal’s Suit Against CBI Probe in Post-poll Violence Cases

Together, rodents and cats wiped out 92 species of birds, says study
Disruptive humans have played a major role in wiping out at least 187 species of birds since 1500. Two natural enemies – rodents and cats – have almost been as lethal. According to the State of the World’s Birds, a global study on the status of avian species, introduced mammals or invasive predators are the primary driver of extinctions of localised bird species. While rodents have been linked to the extinction of 52 bird species, cats have accounted for 40. “At least 187 avian extinctions have been confirmed or suspected since 1500 [baseline year for the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature], 90% of which pertain to endemic insular species concentrated on the Hawaiian Islands, mainland Australia and islands, the Mascarene Islands, New Zealand, and French Polynesia,” the study says in the section on patterns and trends of extinctions. The birds that vanished from these islands belonged to 109 taxa or taxonomical groups, most of them (33) in the Hawaiian … [Read more...] about Together, rodents and cats wiped out 92 species of birds, says study
Hindi Language Row Heats Up: A Look at What Indian Constitution Says on the Debate
A Twitter banter between actors Ajay Devgn and Kichcha Sudeepa has once again trained the spotlight on a debate that has been raging since Independence: Hindi as India’s national language. But, what does the Indian Constitution have to say about this? The topic has touched many a nerve, be it socially or politically. It has gained more traction since the BJP came to power in 2014 and then again in 2019, following the Lok Sabha elections. The saffron party has almost exclusively put the focus on the use of Hindi in an official capacity in administrations across the country, citing “colonial hangover” as a reason behind the push. Earlier this month, union home minister Amit Shah had said Hindi should be accepted as an alternative to English and not to local languages. Presiding over the 37th meeting of the Parliamentary Official Language Committee in Delhi, Shah had said Prime Minister Narendra Modi decided that the medium of running the government is in the official language and … [Read more...] about Hindi Language Row Heats Up: A Look at What Indian Constitution Says on the Debate

Man opened fire at South Carolina mall in self-defense, his lawyer says
A man arrested following Saturday's South Carolina mall shooting in which nine people were wounded had opened fire in self-defense in a confrontation with other shooters, his lawyer said Sunday. The man, identified as 22-year-old Jewayne Price, has been released under house arrest and ordered to wear an ankle monitor after a judge set a $25,000 surety bond. Police booked Price on suspicion of unlawful possession of a pistol after questioning him, the Columbia Police Department said. While police have not formally alleged he was a shooter Saturday, he was barred by Bond Court at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center Sunday from contacting victims of the attack, Columbia police said on Twitter. Price was one of three detained as "people of interest" for questioning, Columbia Police Chief W. H. “Skip” Holbrook said Saturday. The two others weren't involved and were released, police said in a statement released overnight. Investigators believe a fight between people … [Read more...] about Man opened fire at South Carolina mall in self-defense, his lawyer says
California woman says dog defended her from mountain lion
BIG BAR, Calif. — A woman who was attacked by a mountain lion in Northern California says her dog jumped to her defense and was badly wounded in protecting her. “I don't think I will ever be able to live up to how amazing and loyal she is to me,” Erin Wilson told the Sacramento Bee on Tuesday. Wilson, 24, lives in rural Trinity County, about four hours northwest of Sacramento. On Monday, she drove to the Trinity River near unincorporated Big Bar to take an afternoon stroll with Eva, her 2 1/2-year-old Belgian Malinois. Wilson was on a path with Eva a few yards ahead when a mountain lion lunged and swiped at her, scratching Wilson’s left shoulder through her jacket, she said. “I yelled ‘Eva!’ and she came running,” Wilson said. “And she hit that cat really hard.” The dog weighs 55 pounds and was outclassed by the cougar but battled fiercely. California aims to save mountain lion population with new animal crossing April 2, 2022 … [Read more...] about California woman says dog defended her from mountain lion
Costa Concordia: Captain drove ship ‘like it was a Ferrari’, says former skipper
Costa Concordia captain Francesco Schettino skippered the giant liner like a Ferrari driver, a colleague claimed yesterday. Officer Martino Pellegrino accused his boss of being an authoritarian – and his former captain called Schettino a daredevil. Mr Pellegrino said: “If I had to make a comparison, we got the impression he would drive a bus like a Ferrari.” Schettino, who has been slammed as a coward for abandoning the stricken liner before his passengers were safe, told a senior magistrate he ended up leaving when he fell into a lifeboat. Although reports in Italy say he was in the boat with his second in command, Greek Dimitri Christidis, and Silvia Coronica, the third officer. The skipper, 52, said he had been caught among thousands of panic-stricken passengers after Friday night’s crash. He added: “They were pouring on to the decks, taking the lifeboats by assault. “I didn’t even have a life jacket because I had given it to a passenger. I was trying to get people into … [Read more...] about Costa Concordia: Captain drove ship ‘like it was a Ferrari’, says former skipper
Russia says nearly 1,000 Ukrainian soldiers surrendered at Azovstal plant
The Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) says that nearly 1,000 Ukrainian fighters have surrendered at the Azovstal plant in the war-torn city of Mariupol so far this week. Russian troops stormed the plant April 19 and destroyed large areas; however, pockets of organized resistance fighters of the Azov Battalion, a far-right unit of the National Guard of Ukraine, holed up in the plant and mounted a strong resistance. The battalion, which had been nursing dozens of wounded soldiers, began to suffer a medical crisis due to lack of basic necessities such as bandages and cleaning products inside the besieged plant. As a result of their plight, the Azov Battalion started to surrender to Russian troops earlier this week. The Russian MoD said in a statement Wednesday: "In Mariupol, militants of Azov nationalist unit and Ukrainian servicemen holed up in the Azovstal plant continue to surrender. "Over the past 24 hours, 694 militants have laid down their arms and surrendered, including … [Read more...] about Russia says nearly 1,000 Ukrainian soldiers surrendered at Azovstal plant
