Danai Gurira on Starring in Robert O’Hara’s ‘Richard III’: ‘It Should Be a Historical Play, But It’s Actually a Political Thriller’
Click here to read the full article. Robert O’Hara , the Tony Award-nominated director and acclaimed playwright, sat beneath a tree near the side of the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. On the opening night of “ Richard III ,” a searing adaptation of Shakespeare’s tragedy mounted by O’Hara and The Public Theater in Central Park this summer, the director shied away from the photographers and the spotlight. Before taking his seat in the back of the house, watching restlessly as directors do on opening nights, he sat beneath a tree in the quiet and talked about Richard. Pride in London – live: March gets underway as thousands celebrate in the capital
Pride in London has returned to the capital for the first time since 2019, celebrating 50 years since the very first march took place in 1972. More than one million people are expected to descend on the capital for the parade, which begins from 12pm on Saturday (2 July). According to the organisers, 30,000 people have registered to join the march from more than 600 LGBT+ community groups. The parade is an “opportunity for expression of celebration, joy and triumph but also the voice to rightly express the continued fight for those injustices and inequalities that exist among us,” Pride in London said. Those marching today will be calling on the UK government to ban conversion therapy for all LGBT+ people, reform the Gender Recognition Act, and provide equal protection for LGBT+ communities against hate crime. Why do writers and filmmakers keep using lazy science?
Halfway through the second episode of The Midwich Cuckoos I found myself wishing I didn’t have a science degree. For those unfamiliar with Sky ’s show, the source novel by John Wyndham, or one of the pair of movie adaptations, after the village of Midwich mysteriously falls asleep for a day, all the women of childbearing age suddenly find themselves to be pregnant. The resulting children have some disturbing features and abilities. They are the cuckoos of the title. The Sky adaptation seeks a female perspective to the story, which is very much in its favour. It’s mostly the men whom we see trying to deal with the problems presented by the cuckoos in the book, which is perhaps its biggest flaw given they’re not the ones who have to deal with being used as human reed warblers (a favoured cuckoo host in Britain). But modernising it clearly presented the makers with some challenges. Abortion is legal today . It wasn’t in 1957 when the book was published. And then … [Read more...] about Why do writers and filmmakers keep using lazy science?
HowTheLightGetsIn: The philosophy festival where you bump into a Nobel Prize winner in the coffee queue
Philosophy conjures up images of academics quarrelling over semantics and technicalities in university lecture halls. However, when you strip philosophy back to the basics, it is a far simpler beast. “Philosophy is the study or creation of theories about basic things such as the nature of existence, knowledge, and thought, or about how people should live,” Collins Dictionary’s definition reads. It is this definition of philosophy which Hilary Lawson, the founder of HowTheLightGetsIn , the biggest philosophy and music festival in the world, subscribes to. Lawson explains the festival is an explicit attempt to overhaul the widely-held perception that philosophy is an elitist, inaccessible, ivory tower exercise. “We want to change the notion that talking about ideas is for the elite and beyond the realms of the normal person,” Lawson tells The Independent . “In some sense, everyone is a philosopher. We are all in this strange situation of being alive - there are lots of … [Read more...] about HowTheLightGetsIn: The philosophy festival where you bump into a Nobel Prize winner in the coffee queue
6 months’ home confinement for ex-USC coach in college scam
A former University of Southern California soccer coach who took bribes in exchange for helping unqualified kids into the school was sentenced Wednesday to six months in home confinement after cooperating with authorities investigating the college admissions scandal. Prosecutors had not been seeking home confinement or prison time for Ali Khosroshahin, citing his quick acceptance of responsibility and his help in prosecuting others in the massive case. But U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani in Boston decided that prosecutors' recommendation of time served wasn't enough, noting that Khosroshahin dragged his assistant coach into the corrupt scheme, among other things. Khosroshahin, who was the head women's soccer coach from 2007 to 2013, appeared to fight back tears as he apologized to USC, his former athletes, his family and the deserving students who missed out on an admissions spot because of his “lies and greed.” “I want to thank the government for bringing this … [Read more...] about 6 months’ home confinement for ex-USC coach in college scam
Liz Cheney is walking a fine line as she tries to fend of primary challengers
On Tuesday, Representative Liz Cheney led the questioning of former Trump administration aide Cassidy Hutchinson about the former actions on January 6, 2021. But on Thursday evening, she was the one hit with a hail of questions as she faced off against four different primary challengers trying to unseat her from Wyoming’s at-large congressional district. Cheney is persona non grata in the Republican Party thanks to her vote to impeach former president Donald Trump and her continued criticisms of the party’s fealty to him. Her apostasy has already seen her ousted as House Republican Conference chairwoman, and has led Trump and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy to back her main challenger, Harriet Hageman. Yet despite all this, MCheney has doubled down on her critiques of the party – not least in a speech at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library this week, in which she described what has befallen the US as a tragedy. “And the tragedy is that there are politicians in … [Read more...] about Liz Cheney is walking a fine line as she tries to fend of primary challengers
“She’s 10”: Child rape victim’s abortion denial sparks outrage on Twitter
A 10-year-old rape victim in Ohio was denied an abortion, sparking outrage online as many Republican-led states strip away reproductive rights following the Supreme Court 's overruling of Roe v. Wade . Dr. Caitlin Bernard, an obstetrician-gynecologist in Indianapolis, received a call last Monday, three days after the Court's ruling, from a child abuse doctor in Ohio who had a 10-year-old girl in their office who was six weeks and three days pregnant, and therefore ineligible to receive an abortion in the state, according to a report from The Indianapolis Star . The child was unable to receive an abortion in Ohio because the state bans the procedure after six weeks when fetal cardiac activity may be detected. Some Republican-led states banned abortions at that point, claiming that a heartbeat can be detected within that timeframe. However, these so-called "fetal heartbeat" bans on abortion have faced criticism from medical experts , many of whom argue there is no heartbeat … [Read more...] about “She’s 10”: Child rape victim’s abortion denial sparks outrage on Twitter
Homeland Security visits woman over her tweet about Roe v. Wade reversal
A Department of Homeland Security (DHS) agent and two police offers visited the home of a Texas woman following a tweet she sent in response to the Supreme Court 's decision to overturn the landmark abortion ruling Roe v. Wade. The law enforcement officers went to Mattie Walker's home in Garland, Texas on Thursday and presented her with a letter from DHS warning her she could face criminal charges. DHS Special Agent Joshua H. Henry confirmed to The Dallas Morning News that a letter Walker had shared on Twitter after the visit to her home was genuine. Walker also showed Henry's business card in the photo featuring the letter. On June 24, Walker had tweeted in response to a video of President Joe Biden calling for all protests to be peaceful following the Court's decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization. "Burn every f***ing government building down right the f*** now," Walker wrote in the since deleted tweet, according to a report from Jezebel. … [Read more...] about Homeland Security visits woman over her tweet about Roe v. Trump’s infamous Access Hollywood tape gets a plaque
The site where President Donald Trump bragged about grabbing women "by the pussy" has now been memorialized with a plaque. "On this spot in September 2005 Donald J. Trump bragged about committing sexual assault. In November 2016, he was elected President of the United States," reads the sign, which commemorates the comments Trump made as he and Access Hollywood host Billy Bush arrived at Burbank Studios for a taping. A visual-effects artist for the CW network show Legends of Tomorrow revealed the existence of the plaque by posting a picture of it, Mediaite reported on Friday. "In dishonor of our President, the producers of my show have created a plaque commemorating his comments to Billy Bush, which happened on our lot," wrote Sean Gottlieb. When the infamous tape leaked in October 2016, many believed it marked the beginning of the end of Donald Trump's presidential campaign and short political career. Instead, he went on to defeat Democrat Hillary Clinton a month later. … [Read more...] about Trump’s infamous Access Hollywood tape gets a plaque
