The YouTube video starts with a popular British children's cartoon character, Peppa Pig , introducing herself and her family, but there are signs of trouble almost immediately. During the ninth second, Peppa's mother opens her mouth and shouts, "Smoke weed!" The video - a doctored version of a real Peppa episode - deteriorates from there. Over five minutes, there are explosions and racial and homophobic slurs, culminating with Peppa and her parents in dark sunglasses smoking marijuana as rapper Snoop Dogg dances nearby. Since it was uploaded in 2015, the altered video, which has no age restrictions, has been viewed more than 1.5 million times. After years of vowing to police inappropriate content, YouTube continues to deliver violent imagery, drug references, sexually-suggestive sequences and foul, racially-charged language in clips that reach children at a troubling pace, say researchers, parents and consumer groups. President Joe Biden will visit Buffalo on Tuesday in the wake of a mass shooting at a supermarket, the White House announced Sunday. The president, alongside First Lady Jill Biden, plans to “grieve with the community that lost ten lives in a senseless and horrific mass shooting,” according to the administration. Eighteen-year-old Payton S. Gendron, the suspected gunman, live-streamed the Saturday attack that injured three and killed 10. (RELATED: Police Say Buffalo Shooter Investigated Previously For Earlier Threat) “We still need to learn more about the motivation for today’s shooting as law enforcement does its work, but we don’t need anything else to state a clear moral truth: A racially motivated hate crime is abhorrent to the very fabric of this nation,” Biden said in a statement Saturday evening. “Any act of domestic terrorism, including an act perpetrated in the name of a repugnant white nationalist ideology, is antithetical to everything we stand for in America. … [Read more...] about Biden To Visit Buffalo Following Mass Shooting, Avoided Waukesha

Nursery ‘had no space for kids with ethnic names’ including health secretary’s child
Scotland’s Health Secretary was left "disturbed" when a nursery told his wife there was no space for their daughter - just 24 hours before a non-ethnic applicant was told they could attend, it has been reported. Humza Yousaf lodged a complaint with the Care Inspectorate calling for it to establish whether the Little Scholars Nursery in Broughty Ferry, Dundee, had discriminated against applicants with an ethnic name after his two-year-old was refused. During a probe by his wife Nadia El-Nakla, the nursery said it had no space available for three applicants who had ethnic, Muslim-sounding names, including the couple’s daughter Amal, the Daily Record reports. But, responding to fake inquiries from three mothers with non-ethnic names, the Dundee nursery said spaces were available. The nursery denies the allegations, despite email records of the contrasting responses to the families sent by the nursery’s manager, and seen by the news outlet. What are your thoughts on this? … [Read more...] about Nursery ‘had no space for kids with ethnic names’ including health secretary’s child
Struggling with the cost of living? The Tories think it’s all your own fault
Scarcely a day seems to go by without some Tory MP making a fool of themselves by wading in and trying to be helpful to people struggling with the cost of living crisis. It’s getting to be like Wordle, a regular little tweet – you know it’s coming, even though you can’t say exactly what it will be – in this case, which particular backbencher or member of the government will come up with some outstandingly patronising piece of “advice”. Unlike Wordle, however, what the Tories say is an insult to intelligence. The latest one is somebody called Rachel Maclean, who is a junior minister in charge of safeguarding and partly responsible for that great public policy success – the Afghan refugee resettlement scheme. Her top tip for folks in poverty is to go out and get a better job , and if you can’t do that then beg your employer to let you work longer hours. In her words: “We have often heard in the past when people are facing problems with their budgets that one of the … [Read more...] about Struggling with the cost of living? ‘Help us bring the communities together’
In this second and concluding part of a one-hour interview given to N. Ram at ‘Temple Trees' in Colombo, Mahinda Rajapaksa , Sri Lanka's President, responds to questions about his ambitious initiative for a trilingual Sri Lanka, the role of the English language, the contentious 18th constitutional amendment, the jailing and conviction of General Sarath Fonseka, the status and future of 11,000 hard-core LTTE cadres and supporters, and relations with India. You have taken a special interest in language policy. You have announced a Ten Year Presidential Initiative for a Trilingual Sri Lanka and before that the initiative to promote English. This seems to have been thought out over the long term. How do you see this going? Last year was the Year of English and Information Technology. With that the people started spoken English, they started learning English. So I thought the best thing was that all Sinhalese must learn Tamil now, the Tamils must learn Sinhala, and they must all … [Read more...] about ‘Help us bring the communities together’
Lacking vaccines, North Korea battles Covid-19 with antibiotics and home remedies
SEOUL, May 16 (Reuters): Standing tall in bright red hazmat suits, five North Korean health workers stride towards an ambulance to do battle with a Covid-19 outbreak that - in the presumed absence of vaccines - the country is using antibiotics and home remedies to treat. The isolated state is one of only two countries yet to begin a vaccination campaign and, until last week, had insisted it was COVID-free. Now it is mobilizing forces including the army and a public information campaign to combat what authorities have acknowledged is an "explosive" outbreak. In an interview on state television on Monday, Vice Minister of Public Health Kim Hyong Hun said the country had switched from a quarantine to a treatment system to handle the hundreds of thousands of suspected "fever" cases reported each day. The broadcaster showed footage of the hazmat team, and masked workers opening windows, cleaning desks and machines and spraying disinfectant. To treat Covid and its symptoms, state … [Read more...] about Lacking vaccines, North Korea battles Covid-19 with antibiotics and home remedies

The prince has denied any allegation of wrongdoing and earlier this year settled out of court a lawsuit brought against him by Giuffre related to her claims.
