NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana—Despite blistering sun and a heat index of more than 106 degrees, those in need of reproductive healthcare continued to make appointments on Friday at the Planned Parenthood facility in this city. But just hours after the Supreme Court upended decades of precedent, overturned Roe v. Wade , and gutted abortion rights , one 22-year-old woman was equal parts confused and terrified. “I’m worried about my family finding out,” Miranda, who asked that we not use her real name, told The Daily Beast. “I just don’t know what to do yet, and I feel like I don’t have any options.” Miranda works at a hotel in a suburb of New Orleans. She’s four weeks pregnant, and she’s scared: She’s not sure if she’s ready to be a mother. She and her boyfriend have been going through a rough patch—Miranda said she hadn’t told him he might be a father yet. To help her out, a friend of hers came to the Planned Parenthood building on Friday to get more information for her. The … [Read more...] about She’s 4 Weeks Pregnant in Louisiana. We don’t know how to use our archives
A grainy black-and-white photograph of people gathered at a dock, recently unearthed from the National Archives in the U.S., created a stir when the History channel claimed that it could present an alternative narrative to the ultimate fate of pioneering aviator Amelia Earhart. While it has now been established that the image is not that of Earhart, the enormous attention that the picture received globally underscores the enduring power of archives. For a nation obsessed with history, the vast Indian archives that tell us about our grand patrimony are given remarkable short shrift. From palm leaf manuscripts to contemporary ephemera, the vaults, stores and shelves of our institutes are richly populated with nuggets from our past. Material culture Not all these institutes across the subcontinent are suffixed with the word ‘archive,’ and this is perhaps one of the reasons why a true understanding of the word eludes the public imagination. We tend to think of ‘archives’ as dusty … [Read more...] about We don’t know how to use our archives
Psychologist on Boris Johnson’s sense of ‘entitlement’ means he can’t escape disaster
A psychologist has claimed Boris Johnson's sense of 'entitlement' could explain why he seems to face disaster-after-disaster. Behaviour expert and psychologist Dr Pam Spur says those who often have a sense of entitlement, can feel they are permitted to act and do as they wish. This in turn can lead to boundaries being pushed further and further - before repercussions lead to scandal and disaster. He also explained how those who enter top government positions are "natural risktakers". However, Dr Spur also said Johnson's colourful personal life and an "unknown number of children is a high indicator of a risk-taking nature". It comes after the most recent drama facing the PM saw Oliver Dowden confirming he would resign. A party source admitted Dowden's resignation letter was critical of the Prime Minister. Dr Pam Spur explains here why Johnson's personality traits could account for his scandal-riddled life Behaviour expert and psychologist Dr Pam Spur says those who … [Read more...] about Psychologist on Boris Johnson’s sense of ‘entitlement’ means he can’t escape disaster
Boman Irani on his debut web series ‘Masoom’, script selection, and his approach towards a character
Boman Irani recently made his OTT debut with Masoom , currently streaming on Disney Plus Hotstar. The word debut, usually reserved for newbies, somehow does not suit this veteran of over 200 films. But Boman, 62, is excited about it. For, every time he signs up to play a new role, he feels like entering a whole new world. Each character is unique, he says. In Masoom , created by Gurmeet Singh, he plays Balraj Kapoor, a well-connected doctor who seems to be holding on to some dark family secrets. Unsurprisingly, this was not the first web series script he was offered. “I got many offers which were pretty good. Somehow, the dates didn’t quite work out. But in Masoom ’s case, I had a nice break after a project,” he says. Despite his preference for being lazy, Boman’s a busy man even at this age. Just a few weeks ago, the Ranveer Singh-starrer Jayeshbhai Jordaar , in which he played a major role, was released. He has finished shooting his portions for Rajkumar Hirani’s Dunki , … [Read more...] about Boman Irani on his debut web series ‘Masoom’, script selection, and his approach towards a character
Roe v Wade: ‘I wish they understood the trauma’ – rape survivor considered taking her own life after getting pregnant
Over many months, this anticipated Supreme Court ruling has been rattling a nation. At protests across America, both sides in this visceral debate have been building up to this moment. Hope, faith, fear, anger - all emotions stirred among supporters and opponents of abortion; emotions which will be profoundly felt now that the Supreme Court decision has come . Disney to help pay for abortions - Roe v Wade live updates The anti-abortion movement will now focus all its attention on legislators in the nation's state capitals, pressuring the more conservative states to activate their pre-written "trigger laws" and ban abortion immediately. There are warnings of a public health crisis, and there is one group of people for whom this decision will have the most profound, most painful impact. Pro wrestler Gisele Shaw ready to come out as trans: ‘I’m taking my power back’
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 8 Coming out as transgender as an adult? Never easy. Coming out as a transgender woman when you’re someone with a public profile? Harder still. Coming out as a transgender athlete in 2022, in the United States, in today’s political climate? I’m an Abortion Provider in Missouri. Here’s How Life Will Change After Roe.
Imagine finding yourself in a situation where after talking with your doctor, you have decided to have a safe, common medical procedure—one of the most commonly performed procedures in the United States; safer even than a colonoscopy, which is so safe it is used as a screening test. Now imagine that you cannot legally obtain that procedure in your state , and any place where you could have the procedure is a several-hour drive or a plane flight away. Your insurance will not cover this medical care. In order to proceed, you will need to: take time off of work; find childcare, transportation, and lodging; and navigate a new state and a different part of the medical system . Even worse, you could be in legal jeopardy for trying to have this safe, common procedure, the right to which is supported by all major medical associations including the American Medical Association (AMA) and the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). Now that the Roe v. Wade … [Read more...] about I’m an Abortion Provider in Missouri. Here’s How Life Will Change After Roe.
