Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Thursday called for an intensified effort to end the war in Ukraine, adding that there were “no losers in a just peace”. Erdogan said Turkey was trying to pursue “a balanced policy” because of its heavy reliance on Russian energy imports. Turkey has supplied Ukraine with armed drones and other weapons, but Erdogan also enjoys a close working relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin. “We should intensify our diplomatic efforts for a long-lasting ceasefire,” Erdogan told reporters at the end of a NATO summit focused on Russia’s invasion of its pro-Western neighbor. The Madrid gathering saw the US-led military alliance formally invite Finland and Sweden to join the bloc. Their membership applications were held up until the last moment by Erdogan, who sought guarantees that the Nordic countries would join Turkey’s fight against banned Kurdish militants and to swiftly extradite suspects. The dispute was resolved by a 10-point … [Read more...] about Turkish President Erdogan Makes Call to ‘Intensify’ Efforts to End War in Ukraine

“The Flash” boss weighs in on whether Season 9 will be show’s last
The Flash Season 8 came to a dramatic conclusion on Wednesday, June 29, and showrunner Eric Wallace has shared his plans for the show's future. The CW show was given an early renewal in March 2022 , and Wallace discussed whether the forthcoming ninth season might be the show's last in a new interview. 'The Flash' Boss Weighs In On Whether Season 9 Will Be Show's Last After it was renewed for a ninth season, The Flash became the longest-running show in the Arrowverse as it will now surpass Arrow. The Season 8 finale saw Grant Gustin's Barry Allen go up against Reverse-Flash (Tom Cavanagh), something that Cavanagh has said would be the best way to bring the show to its conclusion for good. This, Wallace told TVLine, was exactly why he and the writing team made the Season 8 finale end with the pair battling it out, because they believed it was going to be their last season. Wallace explained: "When we were writing the finale for Season 8, we thought that was the series … [Read more...] about “The Flash” boss weighs in on whether Season 9 will be show’s last
UK Should Offer Americans Free Abortions After Roe v. Wade Repeal
A medical trade union in Britain will lobby the government to provide ‘free’ abortions for Americans in the wake of the repeal of Roe v. Wade . In response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and return the issue of abortion to the state level, the UK’s British Medical Association trade union will lobby its government to provide free abortions to all foreigners — including Americans — whether their own country will pay for the procedure or not. British taxpayers, presumably, would pick up the bill. Members of the British trade union also agreed to publicly condemn the U.S. court’s ruling, joining the likes of so-called ‘Conservative’ Party Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who previously lambasted the move as a “big step backwards”. According to a report by The Telegraph, the BMA approved a motion that would allow it to push the British state to “support the provision of free and safe abortion care to all nationals seeking this in the UK, without … [Read more...] about UK Should Offer Americans Free Abortions After Roe v. Alabama cites abortion ruling in transgender medication case
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Days after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that states can prohibit abortion, Alabama has seized on the decision to argue that the state should also be able to ban gender-affirming medical treatments for transgender youths. The case marks one of the first known instances in which a conservative state has tried to apply the abortion ruling to other realms, just as LGBTQ advocates and others were afraid would happen. Critics have expressed fear that the legal reasoning behind the high court ruling could lead to a rollback of decisions involving such matters as gay marriage, birth control and parental rights. The state is asking a federal appeals court to lift an injunction and let it enforce an Alabama law that would make it a felony to give puberty blockers or hormones to transgender minors to help affirm their gender identity. In its historic ruling last … [Read more...] about Alabama cites abortion ruling in transgender medication case
Chennai’s biking community is back in the saddle
Bullet Bose has fond memories of his glory days at the Sholavaram track when he raced on his Lambretta scooter from 1968. The septuagenarian and Chennai racing legend Subash Chandra Bose (affectionately known as Bullet Bose for his affinity with the Royal Enfield Bullet) states that he has been riding for over 50 years. A regular on the Sholavaram Airfield circuit and later at the Madras Motor Cycle Club at Irungattukottai, Sriperumbudur, Bose has been the most decorated rider through the decades. “Racing those days was so different. I come from a conservative family so we didn’t have any motorcycles, but my friends lent me my first bike, a Java 250 cc, in 1971 and then I graduated to the Royal Enfield Bullet and won my first race at Sholavaram,” he says. AOC, Hillary Clinton Diverge over Criticizing Joe Biden
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and two-time failed presidential Hillary Clinton have diverged this week on the issue of criticizing President Joe Biden for failing to “protect women’s right to have an abortion.” While establishment Democrats and the radical left agree on many policies, the two sides disagree on political tactics. Clinton, who has been in politics for decades, is a part of the old guard and has not yet caught up with Ocasio-Cortez’s strongarm tactics. Where Ocasio-Cortez is willing to slam Biden for failing to “protect” the alleged “right to abortion,” Clinton is not. “I don’t understand the criticism,” Clinton told CBS’s Gayle King on Tuesday. “The strategy is ‘elect more Democrats.’” Hillary’s unwillingness to criticize Biden is contrasted with Ocasio-Cortez’s Wednesday night tweet, in which she slammed Biden for “doing nothing” to protect abortion, which she claimed is a “destructive choice” and a plan of fear. “Showing strength and protecting the … [Read more...] about AOC, Hillary Clinton Diverge over Criticizing Joe Biden
The Guerrilla Art of the Yarn Bomb Goes Natural
Culture Art Relax. They didn't come from Mars or some distant, undiscovered galaxy. The 10 aliens (and their 24 tents) that appeared in the backcountry of Santa Barbara, California, in late January were conceived in the backyard of a hedge-fund manager turned yarn bomber. "Yarn bombing," for those out of the loop, is a public and oft-times guerrilla art form in which all kinds of objects, from parking meters to hulking vehicles, get covered in brightly covered yarn. Some may remember the Mexico City bus stitched over in 2008 by Magda Sayeg, often called the "mother of yarn bombing." Typically, yarn bombers ply their craft in urban areas for maximum exposure. But Steve Duneier, a 47-year-old Brooklyn, New York, native, is bringing it to the wild. "My goal is to draw more people into the wilderness, which I do by detonating massive, colorful yarn bombs in nature," says Duneier. (For the record, this project can't really be termed guerrilla, since he got a permit from the Los … [Read more...] about The Guerrilla Art of the Yarn Bomb Goes Natural
Indo-Pacific is Future, Not Past, Says EAM Jaishankar
The Quad reflects a stronger sense of converging purpose in the face of regional and global challenges and symbolises the larger direction that the world is taking, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Wednesday. Delivering the KK Nayyar memorial lecture, he also described the charges that the concept of Indo-Pacific is derived from Cold War thinking as "motivated and false". Jaishankar said the Indo-Pacific is the future and not the past. "The charges that the Indo-Pacific derives from Cold War thinking are motivated and false. They are made by the very quarters who seek to freeze the status quo of 1945. And deny the integration that has happened in the last two decades," he said. "Their endeavour is to constrain the choices of others and impose their own interests," the external affairs minister noted. Referring to the Quad comprising India, the US, Japan and Australia, Jaishankar said its objective is to do global good and that the need for that to be a … [Read more...] about Indo-Pacific is Future, Not Past, Says EAM Jaishankar
Fever, body aches, loss of smell: New COVID study charts evolution of symptoms
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 A yearlong study of more than 60,000 people tested for the coronavirus in San Francisco found intriguing shifts in COVID-19 symptoms over three different surges — including fewer reports of loss of smell, once considered a trademark of the illness — probably because of changes in the virus itself as well as individuals’ immunity. More people with COVID reported symptoms of upper respiratory infection — including cough, sore throat and congestion — during the omicron surge than earlier waves, researchers found. Patients also experienced fewer instances of systemic issues such as fever and body aches. Loss of smell was reported by 20% of those who tested positive during the delta surge, but only 5% during omicron. The same study, which has not yet been peer-reviewed, also found that most people infected during the omicron surge tested positive for at least five days, and in … [Read more...] about Fever, body aches, loss of smell: New COVID study charts evolution of symptoms
