Prince Charles skipped Ground Zero visit after 9/11 to go shooting—Book
Prince Charles skipped a visit to Ground Zero after 9/11 because going "shooting at Balmoral had taken precedence," according to the memoir of a former U.K. ambassador to Washington. The future king could have joined grieving Americans in New York City a month after Al-Qaeda 's attack brought down the World Trade Center in 2001. However, Sir Christopher Meyer, Britain's ambassador to the U.S. from 1997 to 2003, described how the Prince of Wales left brother Prince Andrew to conduct the visit while he went shooting instead. The account in 2005 book DC Confidential comes after The Sunday Times reported Charles accepted a £1 million ($1.2 million) donation to one of his charities from the bin Laden family. Clarence House said the donation had been accepted by trustees of The Prince of Wales' Charitable Fund. Prince Charles Misses 9/11 Visit Meyer wrote: "The Prince [Andrew] had come to New York to discharge duties that had been intended for his elder brother, the heir to … [Read more...] about Prince Charles skipped Ground Zero visit after 9/11 to go shooting—Book
Is now a good time to buy a house – or is it better to keep renting?
House prices have hit record highs, with many buyers facing a dilemma... should they commit now, or wait for prices to go back down? In July, surveyors said they saw the first signs the market is beginning to cool. In its monthly survey, the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) found that 27% of professionals reported a fall in interest from potential house buyers . It was the third consecutive month that interest from new buyers slipped. But it's not all good news - 52% of professionals have predicted that rents will also rise in the coming months. While she may not have a crystal ball, personal finance expert Gemma Godfrey has some advice for those weighing up whether now is the time to take the plunge into home ownership... If you're considering when to buy a house, rather than if you should buy rather than rent, then you're asking about how to time the market. The question requires making predictions about if and when house prices might … [Read more...] about Is now a good time to buy a house – or is it better to keep renting?
In a rare move, China sanctions seven Taiwanese officials
The political fallout from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi 's recent visit to Taiwan continued on Tuesday, as China announced new sanctions against seven Taiwanese officials and lawmakers. The newly targeted "diehard 'Taiwan independence' elements" included Hsiao Bi-khim, Taiwan's envoy in Washington, as well as Wellington Koo, who is national security adviser to President Tsai Ing-wen of Taiwan. They join Beijing's blacklist of 10 Taiwanese politicians, all but one of whom are from the island's ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). "For some time, a small number of diehard 'Taiwan independence' elements, out of their personal interests, have gone to great lengths to collude with external forces to pursue 'independence' provocations," China 's official Xinhua News Agency said, quoting a spokesperson from the Taiwan Affairs Office (TAO) in Beijing. "They have deliberately instigated cross-strait confrontation and recklessly undermined peace and stability in the Taiwan … [Read more...] about In a rare move, China sanctions seven Taiwanese officials
Alex Jones Lawyer Helps Rumble Change Policy for Hate Groups
While the online video platform Rumble has long taken criticism for amplifying right-wing misinformation and conspiracy theories, the video-hosting service is preparing to head in an even darker direction, hiring one of Alex Jones’ lawyers to draft new content moderation policies that remove an existing ban on material that promotes or incites hate groups. In June, Rumble put one of Jones’ longtime defamation attorneys in charge of overhauling the site’s moderation rules. And he made some unsettling changes. The attorney, Robert Barnes, is a frequent Infowars guest and Jones’ top Sandy Hook defamation attorney for more than three years . But while Barnes wasn’t in the Texas courtroom during the explosive final days of Jones’ recent multimillion-dollar defeat, he did step up to broadcast an “opening statement” to a critical shadow jury: the Infowars audience. Rumble—which has business ties to high-profile Republicans, including former President Donald Trump, billionaire tech … [Read more...] about Alex Jones Lawyer Helps Rumble Change Policy for Hate Groups
The Taiwan Tangle: How US-China Tensions Have Pushed ASEAN into A Corner
As ASEAN marks its 55th anniversary, its midyear foreign ministers’ meeting (AMM) of 3 August 2022 was as usual accompanied by two important ministerial meetings of ASEAN-centric bodies. The AMM was followed by the 12th East Asia Summit (EAS) foreign ministers meeting and the 29th ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) ministerial meeting — both on 5 August. These meetings were chaired by the current ASEAN chairman, Cambodia, through Prak Sokhonn, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. India was represented by Saurabh Kumar, Secretary (East) in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). External Affairs Minister (EAM) Dr S Jaishankar had attended the ASEAN-India meeting on 3 August. The ASEAN Regional Forum in this set of meetings is most important because it meets only at the ministerial level. The EAS FMs report into the EAS summit which is held along with the ASEAN summit in November annually. The ARF is mainly a security-related institution and … [Read more...] about The Taiwan Tangle: How US-China Tensions Have Pushed ASEAN into A Corner
