The U.S. has now reached the once unthinkable toll of 1 million deaths from COVID-19 . How could this happen in the wealthiest country in the world? In a word, because of poverty—and the policy choices that perpetuate it. Our task now is to make different choices. Americans across the country have suffered during this pandemic. But new research by the Poor People's Campaign strongly suggests the poor and low-income have suffered the most. Even controlling for vaccination rates, they found that COVID-19 death rates in poorer U.S. counties were nearly double those in wealthier counties. During the deadliest phases of the pandemic, it rose to five times as many. White Americans still make up the largest share of America's poor and those who've died from COVID-19. But Black, Hispanic and Indigenous Americans are significantly overrepresented in America's poorest counties, and COVID-19 casualty rates run significantly higher for many communities of color. The U.S. Soccer Federation reached milestone agreements to pay its men's and women's teams equally, making the American national governing body the first in the sport to promise both sexes matching money. The federation announced separate collective bargaining agreements through December 2028 with the unions for both national teams on Wednesday, ending years of often acrimonious negotiations. The men have been playing under the terms of a CBA that expired in December 2018. The women's CBA expired at the end of March, but talks continued after the federation and the players agreed to settle a gender discrimination lawsuit brought by some of the players in 2019. The settlement was contingent on the federation reaching labor contracts that equalized pay and bonuses between the two teams. Led by Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe, American women long have pressed for gender equity. “I feel a lot of pride for the girls who are going to see this growing up, and recognize their value … [Read more...] about US Soccer equalizes pay in milestone with women, men

Mom backed for refusing to look after sick step-daughter: “Not her mother”
The internet has backed a mom who refused to look after her sick step-daughter despite already being off work with her own child. Mumsnet user HomeSick2 shared the story on the site Wednesday and explained: "I'm home with a sick 1-year-old who is unable to go to nursery. It's my step-daughter's time with her mom today, tomorrow, and Friday and she has rang my husband this morning at work to say my step-daughter is poorly and can I look after her as I'm off work anyway and she has to go to work. I've said no." The frustrated mom explained that she has to work, as well, and also said no because it sounded like her step-daughter has a different ailment: "She's vomiting whereas my son has Covid-like symptoms . No sick but a temperature, cold, very clingy and no sleep," she wrote. "[It] could be the same thing but doesn't sound it and no way I want my son getting something else on top if I can help it, nor do I want to spend the day clearing up another child's sick when I'm already … [Read more...] about Mom backed for refusing to look after sick step-daughter: “Not her mother”
