Footballer welcomes first baby after losing dad who got him onto pitch to rare cancer
Leyton Orient footballer Adam Thompson has opened up about welcoming a new baby months after losing to his beloved dad to a rare form of cancer. Adam Thompson, 28, went through an emotional rollercoaster when the death of his dad Mark, at the age of just 57, was followed by the birth of his own son Marley this year. Mark encouraged him to stick with the game that would become his life's passion, taking him to coaching sessions from the age of seven. Adam initially hated the sport - he would cry, scream and walk off the pitch. He only gave it another shot when his dad coaxed him back with a shiny new pair of boots, which he credits with winning him over and getting him to persevere. Since then, he's been a regular fixture on the pitch, scouted for Spurs as a youngster and making appearances for Watford, Southend, Brentford and Bradford throughout his career. Poorly student thought uni life was running her down until she found lump
A poorly student thought uni life was running her down - until she found a lump on her neck. Immy Hall, 20, from York, was in her first year at the University of Salford when she started to feel unwell but put it down to student life and communal living. The interior design student's symptoms included night sweats and a worsening of her eczema condition, Yorkshire Live reported. She said: “At Easter time I was laid in my bed at university feeling ill. I rolled over and realised I had this big lump on my neck.” The student was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma in May and is currently undergoing chemotherapy for stage four cancer. Immy said she’s since learned that heavy sweating, particularly at night and itching are potential signs of Hodgkin lymphoma, which is a cancer of the lymphatic system. The 20-year-old has come forward with her story as her friends are tackling Yorkshire’s Three Peaks in one day to raise money for her. Immy's pals Olly Henley, Dom Sterrit, … [Read more...] about Poorly student thought uni life was running her down until she found lump
Skin cancer: How to spot the signs of squamous cell carcinoma – and when to visit a GP
Dragons' Den star Deborah Meaden has recently spoken out about the potential signs of skin cancer, after being diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma in 2015. Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the second most common form of skin cancer and is characterised by abnormal growth of squamous cells, claims the Skin Cancer Foundation. Every year in the UK, around 147,000 new cases of non-melanoma skin cancer are diagnosed. According to the NHS , SCC starts in the cells lining the top of the epidermis and accounts for around 20 in every 100 skin cancers. This type of skin cancer is not usually life threatening and can be easily treated if caught early. But left untreated, these lesions can become deadly and spread to other parts of the body, causing serious complications. Most SCC cases result from prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, either from the sun or tanning beds. Avoiding exposure to UV light can help to lower your risk of SCC of the skin, as well as … [Read more...] about Skin cancer: How to spot the signs of squamous cell carcinoma – and when to visit a GP
Researchers Develop Contact Lens That Could Help In Cancer Diagnosis And Screening
Researchers have developed a contact lens that can catch and identify exosomes, nanometer-sized vesicles prevalent in human fluids that have the potential to be diagnostic cancer biomarkers. The study led by Terasaki Institute for Biomedical Innovation (TIBI) and the findings were published in the journal Advanced Functional Materials. The lens was designed with microchambers bound to antibodies that can capture exosomes found in tears. This antibody-conjugated signaling microchamber contact lens (ACSM-CL) can be stained for detection with nanoparticle-tagged specific antibodies for selective visualization. This offers a potential platform for cancer pre-screening and a supportive diagnostic tool that is easy, rapid, sensitive, cost-effective, and non-invasive. Exosomes are formed within most cells and secreted into many bodily fluids, such as plasma, saliva, urine, and tears. Once thought to be the dumping grounds for unwanted materials from their cells of origin, it is now … [Read more...] about Researchers Develop Contact Lens That Could Help In Cancer Diagnosis And Screening

A Texas man convicted of child sexual assault died after chugging from a water bottle as the verdict was read
A Texas man charged with five counts of child sexual assault died after a jury convicted him and he chugged a bottle of liquid in the courtroom, his lawyer said Friday. After the first count was read on Thursday afternoon and the Denton County jury returned a guilty verdict, Edward Leclair, 57, started drinking from a plastic water bottle filled with what appeared to be clear liquid, lawyer Mike Howard said. “I looked over and noticed him drinking,” Howard said. “His hand was shaking. At the time, I thought it was shaking because of the verdict. Then he kept drinking and drinking.” Assistant District Attorney Jamie Beck told the Denton Record-Chronicle the liquid appeared "cloudy." She did not immediately respond to a request for comment. It isn’t clear what was in Leclair’s bottle. Leclair, a former Navy mechanic and corporate recruiter, was indicted two years ago on five counts of sexual assault on a person between the age of 14 and 17. He said he was innocent of … [Read more...] about A Texas man convicted of child sexual assault died after chugging from a water bottle as the verdict was read

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 LOS ANGELES (AP) — Anne Heche remains on life support and under evaluation for organ donation after a car crash that led to her brain death, a representative for the actor said Friday. Under current California law, death can be determined by the loss of all brain function and in accordance with accepted medical standards. While Heche is legally dead, she's on life support and “her heart is still beating" so that the nonprofit organization OneLegacy can determine if she can be a donor, spokeswoman Holly Baird said in a statement. The process, which involves assessing which organs are viable and finding an appropriate recipient, could take from one day to several days, Baird told The Associated Press. In the U.S., most organ transplants are done after the donor has been declared brain-dead.
