This article is from the archive of our partner . The score for Oblivion , written by French electronic band M83, pulses and swells beautifully throughout Joseph Kosinski's film, crescendoing to thundering Hans Zimmer heights (with perhaps a little too much of his Inception bwaammmp sound) and softening into Michael Giacchino-esque plaintive piano plinking. It's a terrific score, propulsive and moody, and Kosinski showed good taste in hiring the band — just as he did when he commissioned Daft Punk to score his Tron: Legacy . He also smartly reteamed with his Tron cinematographer Claudio Miranda, who recently won an Oscar for working miracles in Life of Pi . Oblivion is sleek and gorgeous, smooth and matte-finish, full of watery grays and cool blues. And the film's digital effects — giving us a broken moon and the windswept barren expanse of an Earth gone to seed — are employed with a subtle and particular hand. What I'm saying is that the movie looks and sounds great. … [Read more...] about Not Even Tom Cruise Can Save ‘Oblivion’

Roquan Smith requests a trade after Chicago Bears contract talks break down: ‘The new front office regime doesn’t value me’
The Chicago Bears have made Roquan Smith off-limits to media since training camp opened last month. The inside linebacker has gotten his word out, however, sending a message to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport indicating he has requested a trade. Smith has been present for training camp but has staged a “hold-in,” meaning he is present but not participating in hopes of receiving a new contract. Smith’s long statement indicates that he has reached a boiling point in trying to negotiate a contract without an agent. This, no doubt, escalates the challenge for first-year general manager Ryan Poles. “I wanted to be a Bear for my entire career, help this team bring a Super Bowl back to our city,” Smith’s statement read. “However, they have left me no choice than to request a trade that allows me to play for an organization that truly values what I bring to the table.” The Bears placed Smith on the physically unable to perform list at the outset of camp, a peculiar move and one that came … [Read more...] about Roquan Smith requests a trade after Chicago Bears contract talks break down: ‘The new front office regime doesn’t value me’
Linking Congress protest to Ayodhya temple foundation day attempt to mislead people: Rajasthan party chief Govind Singh Dotasra
Rajasthan Congress chief Govind Singh Dotasra on August 6 said BJP leaders linking the party’s protest over inflation to the Ayodhya temple foundation day is not just absurd but also an attempt to mislead people as they don't have answers to burning issues. He said Union Home Miniter Amit Shah and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath should have spoken on the issues raised by the Congress instead of making an attempt to divert public attention. "How can the protest against inflation and unemployment be linked to Ram Janambhoomi foundation day and called an insult to Ram Bhakts," he asked. "The protest was on crucial issues of high inflation, unemployment and GST, which have badly affected the common man. Since they have no answers to these issues, they brought a ridiculous narrative only to mislead people," Mr. Dotasra said. He alleged that the Centre’s Narendra Modi government does not care for people. Therefore, they are just "trying to divert public attention by … [Read more...] about Linking Congress protest to Ayodhya temple foundation day attempt to mislead people: Rajasthan party chief Govind Singh Dotasra

Rail union chief Mick Lynch says he’d back a general strike over cost-of-living disaster
Rail union chiefs could back a general strike as the cost-of-living disaster escalates, a leader said last night. Mick Lynch, general secretary of the rail union RMT, said if the Trades Union Congress called the drastic action, he would back it. Mr Lynch said “people are not being paid enough to survive in this economy” and “are absolutely frightened of what’s going to happen”, as experts predicted energy bills will be more than triple what they were last winter. “We would call for generalised action and synchronised responses from the trade union movement,” he told BBC Newsnight. “The TUC can call a general strike, not me. If they call it we’ll support it, absolutely. “We need a firm response from the trade unions to get the British working class a pay increase to deal with this poverty crisis. We also need to tackle housing costs, interest rates and food poverty.” Workers in London's Hyde Park during the general strike of 1926 ( Image: PA Archive/PA Images) … [Read more...] about Rail union chief Mick Lynch says he’d back a general strike over cost-of-living disaster
McCarthy to Subpoena Intel Agency Chiefs in Biden Family Probe
House minority leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) says Republicans will expand the scope of investigations to include intelligence agency chiefs in order to learn more about the Biden family’s shady business deals if the GOP takes the majority. “They should come in and talk to us,” McCarthy told the New York Post of the intelligence officers. “You’d want to ask these individuals what did they know and when.” It should be noted that in October 2020, 51 former intelligence agency officials published a letter in Politico that suggested the Hunter Biden laptop story was “disinformation pushed by Russia.” “People can come in and talk to us and answer the questions,” McCarthy continued . “If that’s not the case there are times we will use the subpoena as well.” McCarthy’s plan is predicated on retaking the House in the midterm elections. If all goes well, Republicans will reclaim the House and regain the subpoena power that Democrats on the January 6 select committee have been … [Read more...] about McCarthy to Subpoena Intel Agency Chiefs in Biden Family Probe
