President Trump intends to announce his Supreme Court nominee next week amid speculation and differing media reports about the top contenders.Two publications have named Judge Neil Gorsuch of the Denver-based 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals as a top contender. But at least two other stories, published by USA Today and Politico, say there are three top contenders.One of the three, Judge William Pryor of the Atlanta-based 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, was previously thought to be at or near the top of the list. A former traffic-court prosecutor, Kirk Fisher had envisioned an environmental law focus when he transitioned into private practice. He was even attending a post-law-degree graduate program in the subject at Vermont Law School.The recession and a chance encounter with a group of lawyers from an Arizona firm at a Las Vegas seminar changed his mind.The Greenville, South Carolina, practitioner saw his environmental practice dwindle as construction work dropped off during the recession. So he turned to personal injury work to pay the bills. Attending a brain injury seminar in 2009 as he worked on a case, he chatted with the group of Arizona lawyers. Santa Anita Racetrack in Calif. Has 20th Horse Death
Eskenforadrink, a 4-year-old filly who was the even-money favorite in Saturday's third race at Santa Anita Park, suffered an injury to her right front ankle during the race and had to be euthanized, racing officials said. It was the first injury suffered by a horse at Santa Anita since the park re-opened Thursday after it was closed for two days of soil inspection last week amid a rash of 19 horse deaths in two months. "Certainly (horse) racing has risks, as racing does in virtually any sport,'' Rick Arthur, medical director of the California Horse Racing Board, told City News Service after confirming the thoroughbred's death. Arthur said a necropsy will be performed on Eskenforadrink, who was bred in Kentucky but spent her racing career in California. Molly the 3-year-old golden retriever lives at an equine rescue in North Carolina where she particularly loves the miniature ponies because she can reach them easier.
