Orca pair rip open great white sharks to feast on their livers and hearts

June 30, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

A single pair of killer whales have been attacking and killing great white sharks off the coast of South Africa in order to remove and eat their livers and hearts. According to research published in the African Journal of Marine Science , the sharks have been avoiding sites where they have aggregated for many years in order to not bump into the two deadly orcas. Researchers found that since 2017, eight white shark carcasses washed up on beaches in the Western Cape, near Gansbaai. Seven of the eight had their livers removed, and some their hearts as well. The wounds on the bodies were distinctively orca-caused. "There were killer whale tooth impressions on the pectoral fins of the sharks, [and] their livers were removed so neatly—it would take coordination of large and sophisticated animals to tear a white shark open and do this," Alison Towner, lead author and senior white shark biologist, told Newsweek . "Also each time a dead shark washed out, there had been … [Read more...] about Orca pair rip open great white sharks to feast on their livers and hearts

Obama Responds to Drone Crashing at White House

January 27, 2015 by www.newsweek.com

Updated | After a two-foot drone went undetected by White House radars and crashed into a tree on the South Lawn at 3 a.m. on Monday morning, President Obama, in his first public comments since the incident, admitted that the United States has failed to keep pace with the technology. The pilot of the drone works for the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency and had been drinking at an apartment nearby the White House, according to a New York Times report . When he lost control of the drone during a recreational flight, he hoped it had not hit the White House premises, but the next morning friends alerted him that his drone was all over the news. He first called his employer, and then notified authorities. Following an investigation, the Secret Service identified the operator as a non-White House government employee. It is unclear from reports why the unidentified man was flying the device at that hour, but he claims he lost control during a recreational flight and did … [Read more...] about Obama Responds to Drone Crashing at White House

Man gets 2 years in prison after racially motivated threats, calling area a ‘white town’

June 30, 2022 by www.nbcnews.com

A Kansas man was sentenced on Wednesday to two years and three months in federal prison after threatening a Black man with a knife because of his race in order to intimidate him and interfere with his right to fair housing, the Department of Justice said. Colton Donner, 27, had been driving through a residential area of Paola, Kansas, on Sept. 11, 2019, when he saw the victim, a Black man, walking on a sidewalk, authorities said in a news release. Paola is about 44 miles southwest of Kansas City. Donner stopped, got out of the car and approached the victim, brandishing a knife, according to the release. He then threatened the victim, yelling racial slurs at him and saying Paola was a "white town," the Justice Department said, citing court documents. It wasn’t clear if the man was looking for a home at the time of the incident. The incident was investigated by the Paola Police Department and the Kansas City Field Office of the FBI. Donner was sentenced on Wednesday … [Read more...] about Man gets 2 years in prison after racially motivated threats, calling area a ‘white town’

Here’s How to Make the Colour White Your BFF This Monsoon Season

June 30, 2022 by www.news18.com

White, as a colour, is a symbol of purity and innocence. The bright and colourless hue is a staple in the fashion world. From red carpet looks to personal styles, an ensemble in white one of the most loved colours to own. However, during the monsoons garments in white are often avoided and kept away for another day.  Getting a stain off of a crisp white shirt or dropping red wine over a designer white gown is a nightmare. But the bright hue does make an elegant and chic addition to your look on any given day. Recently, Deepika Padukone wore an exquisite white gown for an event in Paris. The Pathan actor looked elegant in a gown designed by Monsoori. The risqué ensemble featured a plunging neckline, and the gown was also accentuated with layers and tulle. “Is it my skin colour?” Starbucks accused of racism AGAIN after staff ‘allowed white customer toilet code but not black man’

April 16, 2018 by www.mirror.co.uk

Coffee chain Starbucks is being accused of racism again, just days after two black men were arrested for just waiting for a friend. In the latest incident Brandon Ward claims he was refused access to a branch's toilet, while a white man was given the code. He recorded a video as he waited at the toilet, moments after he claims he was refused the code to use the facility because he's black. As he films, another customer comes out of bathroom and explains he had been given the toilet room code despite not having made a purchase yet. Mr Ward then approaches the counter and speaks to a woman behind the counter, who says on the video she's the manager. The conversation quickly escalates with the worker asking him to leave - although the social media clip doesn't show the original alleged refusal. Mr Ward asks if it's because of his skin colour. The store manager didn't explain why she wanted him to leave ( Image: @ShaunKing/Twitter) American civil rights activist … [Read more...] about “Is it my skin colour?” Starbucks accused of racism AGAIN after staff ‘allowed white customer toilet code but not black man’

Ex-Michigan governor takes the 5th at Flint water trial

June 30, 2022 by www.sfchronicle.com

DETROIT (AP) — Former Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder invoked his right against self-incrimination Thursday and declined to answer questions at a civil trial arising from lead contamination in Flint's water in 2014-15. Snyder was called as a witness in federal court in Ann Arbor, two days after the Michigan Supreme Court in a separate case said criminal indictments against him and eight other people were invalid. Snyder's appearance was already planned. Lawyers and the judge knew he would formally decline to answer questions while any criminal case was pending. “Your honor, based on the advice of counsel, I would exercise my Fifth Amendment rights,” Snyder told U.S. District Judge Judith Levy. He repeated the statement twice to lawyers. Jurors on Wednesday watched a recorded deposition of Snyder, a formal interview with lawyers conducted in 2020. “I wish this never would have happened,” Snyder said of the Flint water mess. Flint managers appointed by Snyder, a Republican, … [Read more...] about Ex-Michigan governor takes the 5th at Flint water trial

Is Biden a Man Out of Time?

June 30, 2022 by www.theatlantic.com

The White House’s response to last week’s Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade , which in 1973 established a constitutional right to abortion, once again has exposed the tension between the conciliatory instincts President Joe Biden developed during his long career in Washington, D.C., and the ferocity of the modern combat between the two major political parties. An array of frustrated Democrats this week openly complained that Biden and other administration officials had failed, in their initial reactions to the ruling, to reflect the urgency and anguish of abortion-rights supporters. Although Biden quickly denounced the decision last week, he has avoided any broader condemnation of the Court’s direction or legitimacy and dismissed proposals for changing its structure. Biden’s aides have stressed the limits of what the executive branch can do to mitigate the impact of the ruling. Most notably, Biden initially refused to endorse rolling back the Senate filibuster in … [Read more...] about Is Biden a Man Out of Time?
