Nobody was talking. The Watchdog team spent the week trying to crack the mystery of Bunsgate — bad buns that closed In-N-Out Burger for a couple of days and challenged sales at Raising Cane's and Whataburger.A week later, The Watchdog remains troubled by the lack of transparency in this entire episode. The restaurant chains refused to give a full explanation of what happened, why and who was involved. For some reason, it was — until now — a secret not seen since Coke hid its formula. My colleague, Marina Trahan Martinez, and I spent the week calling bread suppliers, yeast-makers, bakeries, distributors and anyone we knew connected to the bread business. For most of the week, we got nowhere.Public relations people for In-N-Out Burger, Raising Cane's and Whataburger declined to provide new information. In this age of letting-it-all-hang-out transparency, it seems like an unnecessary secret. You know what they say. The cover-up is usually worse than the crime.Even In-N-Out, … [Read more...] about Why no buns at fast food chains in Texas last week? What we found digging into #BunGate

Pressley’s upset another win for fresh Democratic voices
BOSTON — Ayanna Pressley is all but assured of becoming the first black woman elected to Congress from Massachusetts, the latest example of the Democratic Party's embrace of diversity and progressive politics as the recipe for success in the Trump era. The 44-year-old's upset victory against longtime Democratic Rep. Michael Capuano in Tuesday's primary sets the stage for Pressley to represent an area once served by Tip O'Neill and John F. Kennedy. Her win comes at the tail end of a primary season in which black politicians have made a series of advances. In nearby Connecticut, Jahana Hayes is on track to become that state's first black woman to win a congressional seat if she prevails in November. And black politicians in three states — Florida, Georgia and Maryland — have won the Democratic nomination for governor, a historic turn for a country that has elected just two black governors in U.S. history. In Alaska hometown, Native women say police ignored rapes
NOME, Alaska — There's not much that scares Susie. As an Alaska Native woman, she thrives amid sub-zero winters in her village near the Arctic Circle, and camps with her family each summer at the Bering Sea, catching, drying and smoking salmon to put away for winter. But Susie is afraid to return to Nome. The man who raped her, she says, is still there. "Just scares me, and I'm scared to see him, and thinking what he might do," she says. "But I'm not scared in the village, or any other villages, because I know he won't come. "But Nome is like ... I don't really like to overnight in Nome." He is a free man — no charges were filed against him. Susie reported to Nome police that she had been assaulted and went with the investigating officer to the hospital, where a forensic nurse was prepared to perform a sexual assault exam. But the officer told the nurse not to bother, according to a hospital record that Susie released to The Associated Press. "The Officer stated that he was … [Read more...] about In Alaska hometown, Native women say police ignored rapes
Plant-Based Meat Sales Rise, Fueled by Carnivores
From soy-based sliders to ground lentil sausages, plant-based meat substitutes are surging in popularity. And carnivores — not vegans or vegetarians — are among the biggest consumers. Growing demand for healthier, more sustainable food is one reason people are seeking plant-based meats. That's also the reason behind rising sales of oat milk, cauliflower pizza crust and even coconut oil-based makeup. "There's a lot of messaging that plants are powerful. It feels like something that gives you a quick fix, something is really good for you," said Melanie Bartelme, a global food analyst with the consulting firm Mintel. Better technology and marketing wizardry is also fueling sales. Newer startups like Impossible Foods and Beyond Meat — both backed by investments from Microsoft founder Bill Gates — have won over carnivores with plant-based products that look and taste like meat.
