Insurance premiums are the second-most-costly part of vehicle ownership in the U.S., well ahead of general repair and maintenance. Each year, the NAIC takes data from insurers and states and compiles a five-year running average of annual premium costs. This year’s data is the average … [Read more...] about Car Insurance Premiums 2014: Which State Has The Highest Rates?

That is when he learned he will be charged $4,517 as opposed to $3,423 if he was a woman.“I was pretty angry about that. And I didn’t feel like getting screwed over any more,” he told the Canadian Broadcasting Company. “So I asked them to change my gender on my auto policy, and [a rep] was like, ‘We can’t do that.'”However, quickly enough the man discovered a loophole in the system that would let him avail the lesser cost when it came to the car insurance. Insurance giant Allstate has raised eyebrows after being granted patents for a proposed high-tech surveillance system that could track a driver’s every move. The company won patents for technology that, through the use of cameras and sensors, could monitor whether a driver is speeding, peeling rubber or turning without signaling. Sensors could even record a driver’s heart rate and blood pressure and gather information about passengers. Not only could Allstate use that data to set insurance rates and analyze driver behavior, the company could be free to sell it to third parties such as life and health insurance companies, potential employers, credit rating agencies and advertisers. As with other types of data companies collect from consumers, drivers are unlikely to know what’s done with it, how it’s stored, and who winds up with the information for what purpose. And though Allstate’s new technology would require consent for those willing to give up such … [Read more...] about How much privacy are drivers willing to give up for better car insurance rates?

The radio and TV presenter's dad Dr Leslie Grofton died last month and as a result her mother's car policy increased as she is now deemed "single" by an insurance firm. She vented her frustration about the incident on Twitter. Laverne, who will soon take over as host of Radio 4's Desert Island Discs, told her followers: "Mam called her car insurance people to say Dad had died, and they put her premium up by £200 a year because she is 'single' (and presumably a girl racer??) Merry Christmas!" Among those who reacted to the tweet was TV cook Nigella Lawson. Lawson wrote: "I’m so sorry for your loss. A platitude, but deeply meant. These people!"
