Gallery: Dade County major adjusting to life after violent crash +6 more photos TRENTON, Ga. — The laying of a spike strip is an art, not a science. In the heat of a police chase, Dade County Maj. Tommy Bradford said, the key is timing. An officer wants to surprise the fleeing target. It doesn't matter if the driver is in a straightaway or a curve. It doesn't even matter if the driver sees the spike strip — as long as they don't see it too soon. If they see it too soon, Bradford said, they can react. They can avoid contact and continue their getaway. "It just varies," he said during an interview Thursday. "It's based off of speed, really. It's a judgment call: trying to eye their speed and time it right. There's not really a set distance [away from you] they need to be." Uncooperative witnesses and unverified information helped a Chattanooga man facing a life sentence for a fatal 2015 shooting get a reduced 12-year sentence instead, prosecutors said Tuesday. Darreo Harris, 26, pleaded guilty in Hamilton County Criminal Court to facilitation of second-degree murder in the Jan. 1, 2015, slaying of 18-year-old Juan Boyd, who died in a Waffle House parking lot in Brainerd. When he reached the car, police said, the shooter put his hand on the trunk and shot again through the back windshield. About a week later, police said they matched that palm print to Harris and charged him with criminal homicide. A grand jurylater indicted him on a first-degree … [Read more...] about Chattanooga man receives 12-year prison sentence in fatal 2015 shooting
Air pollution is shaving months — and in some cases more than a year — off your life expectancy, depending on where you live, according to a study published this week. Worldwide, outdoor air pollution reduces the average life expectancy at birth by one year. The effect is much more pronounced in some countries: It cuts the average Egyptian's life span by 1.9 years and the average Indian's by 1.5 years. In Russia, it's around nine months. CLOSER TO HOME In 1969, Chattanooga was ranked as the worst city in the nation for air pollution. In those days, residents of Lookout or Signal mountains often could see a brown layer of smog hovering over the downtown area — a thermal inversion held in place by the mountains and Missionary Ridge. Several large manufacturing facilities off South Broad Street spewed particles into the air, and local residents often complained that a shirt that was white in the morning would have a layer of black soot around the collar by late … [Read more...] about Air pollution is shortening your life.
