Najib, Shafee fail to obtain leave to challenge Sri Ram’s appointment as prosecutor
PUTRAJAYA: Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and his lawyer Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah have failed to obtain leave to appeal their bid to challenge the appointment of Datuk Seri Gopal Sri Ram as prosecutor in their respective criminal cases. A three-man panel of the Federal Court, chaired by Justice Mohd Zawawi Salleh, dismissed both applications by Najib and Muhammad Shafee in a unanimous decision here on Monday (May 23). Other judges on the panel were Justices P. Nallini Pathmanathan and Vernon Ong Lam Kiat. The Labour Deputy Leader was moved from her role as Labour chair and handed the post of shadow chancellor to the Duchy of Lancaster in a reshuffle announced late on Sunday night. And late on Sunday, she was installed as the successor to Rachel Reeves, who was promoted to shadow chancellor after Anneliese Dodds was removed. Ms Rayner called for "solidarity" in a statement on Twitter on Sunday night, and referenced her other new brief as shadow secretary of state for the future of work by vowing to bring "well-paid jobs" to all corners of the country. Biden prepares asylum overhaul at border, but court challenges loom
The Biden administration next week plans to begin using an overhauled system for screening migrants seeking humanitarian protection along the U.S. southern border, relying more on asylum officers instead of immigration judges to help determine who gets to stay in the country. Administration officials say the changes are expected to reduce court backlogs and make it easier for authorities to deport those who don't qualify for protection. The new system is scheduled to start Tuesday at two immigration detention centers in Texas, and officers are expected to process several hundred cases per month during the initial phase, according to the Department of Homeland Security. Officials describe the "Asylum Officer Rule" as their most significant border policy initiative to date, with the ability to streamline a system with a backlog of nearly 400,000 pending cases. Officials expect the new system will work faster without sacrificing fairness, because claims rejected by asylum officers … [Read more...] about Biden prepares asylum overhaul at border, but court challenges loom

Jahangirpuri anti-encroachment drive: Do you need bulldozers to remove chairs, tables, benches, Supreme Court asks NDMC
“Do you need bulldozers to clear stalls, chairs, tables and boxes,” the Supreme Court asked the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) on Thursday. A Bench of Justices L. Nageswara Rao and B.R. Gavai extended the status quo order on the “anti-encroachment” drive in Jahangirpuri until further orders. The question from the court came after Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, for the NDMC, explained that the law permitted the removal of “stalls, benches, boxes, ladders”, etc, occupying public streets and footpaths without permission. “So, the demolition carried out yesterday [in Jahangirpuri] was restricted to benches, boxes and chairs,” Justice Rao asked the Solicitor General. “Whatever was on public street, on footpath... That is my instruction,” Mr. Mehta said. “For stalls, benches, boxes, ladders and chairs, do you need a bulldozer,” Justice Gavai asked. The Solicitor General conceded that “when you need bulldozers, you need it for buildings”. Affected allowed to file … [Read more...] about Jahangirpuri anti-encroachment drive: Do you need bulldozers to remove chairs, tables, benches, Supreme Court asks NDMC

Biden-Backed Oregon Rep. Kurt Schrader Loses to Far-Left Primary Challenger
Seven-term Democrat Rep. Kurt Schrader (OR) officially lost his primary race against far-left-backed Jamie McLeod-Skinner following the Associated Press calling the race ten days after election day after a slow ballot count due to blurry bar codes. Before AP called the race on Friday, the election was “too close to call” — even though the far-left challenger had a commanding lead — because of a printing issue with the ballots in Clackamas County, the state’s third-largest county. “Blurry barcodes made vote-counting machines reject a large number of ballots in Clackamas County and elections workers were transferring the votes by hand to fresh ballots so they could be tallied,” the Associated Press said , noting that the county includes parts of the Fifth and Sixth Congressional Districts. In this Aug. 6, 2018 photo, Jamie McLeod-Skinner poses in Redmond, Ore. (Andrew Selsky, File/AP) Now that the primary is over, it brings an end to the infighting between local and … [Read more...] about Biden-Backed Oregon Rep.
