Kayla Epstein, The Washington Post Published 1:13 pm PST, Tuesday, February 19, 2019 It was like a scene out of a horror movie: two hikers, alone in the frigid wilderness with no cell reception, suddenly stumbled into a pool of quicksand. On Saturday, Ryan Osmun, 34, and and Jessika McNeill from Arizona were about three hours into the Subway trail route in Utah's Zion National Park when their scenic walk took a turn. McNeill tripped, landing in quicksand. When Osmun attempted to rescue her, he too became trapped and buried up to his knee. "There was no chance of moving it at all," Osmun told CBS News. "The sand had surrounded the whole leg, and I couldn't move it." Quicksand forms when water or air becomes trapped in sand. If exposed to a sudden shock or stress, like the weight of a hiker, it can become unstable. If something - like a limb - is submerged, it is incredibly hard to escape. "Quicksand is not normally a problem at Zion, but it does happen if conditions are … [Read more...] about Pair hiking in Utah wilderness with no cell service gets caught in quicksand

Trump kicks out Russians, but media focus on other controversies
close Video Kurtz: Press still sees Stormy weather for president 'MediaBuzz' host Howard Kurtz weighs in on the media focusing on the Stormy Daniels scandal and ignoring President Trump's recent achievements, like expelling Russian diplomats from the United States. On Monday, the president accused of coddling Vladimir Putin expelled 60 Russian diplomats, the largest number in American history, and that includes the Cold War. Maybe Trump had had enough after the apparent Russian poisoning of a spy in London. Maybe John Bolton is already whispering in his ear. The president, who coordinated his efforts with nearly two dozen other countries, didn't publicly scold Putin. Trump says a whole lot of things, but in the end, actions usually speak louder than words. The move was dutifully covered by the press, even though it contradicts the soft-on-Moscow narrative. But many outlets wasted little time returning to their preferred story line of Trumpian chaos. There was, of … [Read more...] about Trump kicks out Russians, but media focus on other controversies
The Daily 202: Trump gets schooled in Syria on how much his words matter
With Breanne Deppisch and Joanie Greve. THE BIG IDEA: Those who don’t learn from the mistakes of the past are doomed to repeat them. That’s what the United States keeps doing in Syria. In 1950, Secretary of State Dean Acheson gave a speech implying that the Korean Peninsula was outside of the core defense perimeter of the United States. Though not intended, this sent a signal that America was abandoning South Korea. That helped provoke a war with fallout we're still managing today. Barack Obama made one of the gravest blunders of his presidency when he declared in 2012 that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad using chemical weapons against civilians would cross a “red line” and bring “enormous consequences.” When hundreds were killed by a gas attack the next year, he planned to launch missiles but blinked when the Brits balked. After Obama punted the decision to a Congress that dithered, an emboldened Assad escalated his barbaric … [Read more...] about The Daily 202: Trump gets schooled in Syria on how much his words matter
Children forced to leap from balcony to escape raging second-storey blaze as it rips through New Jersey dance studio
CHILDREN were forced to leap from a balcony to escape a raging inferno as it tore through their New Jersey dance studio. Horrified onlookers rushed to help the youngsters as they desperately scrambled to create an escape route for the stranded dancers. Ladders were propped up against the building's balcony as terrified children dangled perilously from the second floor during the blaze, which broke out at about 7pm yesterday. As debris began to fall from the burning building two of the children had to fall to escape the blaze. One of the heroic rescuers even carries a child down the escape ladder. According to local Fire Chief, Steve Curry, five people were taken to a hospital for further medical attention. None of the injuries sustained are said to be life-threatening. Ilker Kesiktas, the man who captured the horror on camera, told CBS: “Thank God nobody was dead. “That was our only concern. Little injuries but we care about the lives of those kids.” New York Daily … [Read more...] about Children forced to leap from balcony to escape raging second-storey blaze as it rips through New Jersey dance studio
Husker notes: Charlie McBride influences new Nebraska defensive coordinator Erik Chinander
LINCOLN — Defensive coordinator Erik Chinander's message to his defense before the spring game will be pretty simple. He’s just going to steal what former Husker defensive coordinator Charlie McBride told his team Thursday.“We had an awful special guest with us the last couple days, Coach Charlie McBride was here,” Chinander said. “He gave a great message, so I’ll probably try and echo some of that. I want to keep that in-house, but he gave us some great stuff.”McBride ran the defensive side of the ball for Nebraska for 23 seasons, including the great Husker defenses of the 1990s. Chinander said McBride was in town to “visit some old friends” and try and get back around the program. McBride spoke to the entire team following Thursday’s practice. “He taught me a lot over the last couple days, and I want to continue with the message he gave the kids,” Chinander said.Verduzco ready to evaluateThe quarterback … [Read more...] about Husker notes: Charlie McBride influences new Nebraska defensive coordinator Erik Chinander
