The View’s Whoopi Goldberg defends Kellyanne Conway: “Don’t boo her”
During Tuesday's episode of ABC 's The View , host Whoopi Goldberg came to the defense of controversial guest Kellyanne Conway after the studio audience began to boo her. At one point during her appearance, she began to discuss her disappointment with Trump's loss in the 2020 election and coupled it with disparaging remarks about President Joe Biden , prompting boos from the live audience. The U.S. Housing Market Has Peaked
Sign up for Derek’s newsletter here . If you’ve tried to buy a home in the past two years, you have my most profound sympathies. Your experience has probably gone something like this: You found your dream home online; sent photos around to your family; visited the premises (or decided to buy, sight unseen); got your financial statements in order; smartly offered 10 percent over asking; and learned, several hours later, that no fewer than 831 other people had bid for the same house, which sold to a couple who paid 50 percent over asking, all cash, and cinched the deal with a contract amendment promising to name their firstborn child after the seller. Yes, the American real-estate market really has been historically hellish, or historically hot, depending on whether you were trying to buy a home or sell one. Within the past year, just about every housing statistic you could imagine set some kind of berserk record . Home prices hit a record high , the share of homes that sold … [Read more...] about The U.S. Housing Market Has Peaked

Pakistani-Origin Member of UK’s House of Lords Accused of Exploiting Women
London: A Pakistani-origin member of the House of Lords has embroiled in accusations that he used his position to exploit vulnerable women who came to him seeking help. Lord Nazir Ahmed, who is at the forefront of anti-India campaigns including backing pro-Khalistan groups in the UK, is alleged to have conducted a sexual relationship with a woman after she asked him for help, according to a BBC report. Another unnamed woman who had sought Ahmed's assistance also claims he suggested she should spend the night at his London home, it said. "Lord Ahmed used my trust to repeatedly have intercourse with me," Tahira Zaman told Lords' Commissioner for Standards, Lucy Scott-Moncrieff, in a complaint. "I feel I have been preyed upon due to my vulnerability and used by Lord Ahmed," the 43-year-old said. Zaman says she approached Ahmed in February 2017 through a mutual friend, hoping he would help get the police to investigate a Muslim faith healer who she felt was a danger to women. He … [Read more...] about Pakistani-Origin Member of UK’s House of Lords Accused of Exploiting Women
Joe Biden’s gaffes are causing the White House a communications headache
President Joe Biden is causing a communications headache for White House staff some experts have said, following his recent comments about the U.S. defending Taiwan if it were to be attacked by China. The president said on Monday that the U.S. had a "commitment" to defend Taiwan militarily—the third time he's made remarks that appear to signal a shift in the U.S. policy of "strategic ambiguity." However, Biden also said that U.S. policy had not changed. That policy has seen the U.S. not publicly committing to defend Taiwan from a Chinese attack but not saying the U.S. wouldn't intervene either. China considers Taiwan to be part of its sovereign territory, while the U.S. pursues a One China policy that recognizes only one Chinese government—the one based in Beijing. Taiwan's official name is the Republic of China. This isn't the first time Biden's comments have proven controversial. On two previous occasions, the White House sought to clarify the president's statements … [Read more...] about Joe Biden’s gaffes are causing the White House a communications headache

Congress and the White House can provide relief from high oil and drug prices | Opinion
Americans are worried about inflation. But what can the government do about it? The traditional response to inflation looks to the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates and cool the economy. Notwithstanding the risk of provoking a recession , the Fed is doing this—but it will take a decent period of time for interest rate hikes to reduce inflation. Meanwhile, there's lots of evidence that corporate greed and monopoly power are major contributors to the problem. Corporate profits are growing faster than inflation; companies are acknowledging that they are raising prices because they can , not because costs are going up; and workers' wages are not keeping up with inflation . These are problems that can be addressed, in part, by tough anti-monopoly policies and more worker unionization—but even if we get those things, they may take years to have full impact. There are two important steps that the government can take to give consumers immediate relief from high prices, … [Read more...] about Congress and the White House can provide relief from high oil and drug prices | Opinion
