Supreme Court sets aside Delhi High Court order staying SFIO probe into companies related to Sahara group
The Supreme Court on Thursday set aside a Delhi High Court order staying a Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) probe into several companies related to the Sahara group. A Vacation Bench led by Justice D.Y. Chandrachud allowed the appeal filed by the SFIO against the High Court order. It said the High Court was not justified in staying the investigation. The SFIO, a corporate fraud investigating agency, had filed an appeal against the High Court stay order of December 13, 2021. The High Court had forbidden further proceedings or coercive measures in the case. It stayed the operation and implementation of two orders of the SFIO for an investigation into the companies. SG’s apprehension Arguing the appeal, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta had expressed apprehensions about the fate of the probe following the High Court order, saying it would cause serious prejudice. The High Court had said the Sahara companies made out a prima facie case for grant of interim relief, and the … [Read more...] about Supreme Court sets aside Delhi High Court order staying SFIO probe into companies related to Sahara group
Outspoken NRA member breaks with gun group over convention: “Read the room”
A member of the National Rifle Association ( NRA ) criticized the gun group for holding its annual three-day convention beginning Friday in Houston, Texas in the aftermath of Tuesday's mass school shooting that left 21 people killed earlier this week in the state. "I'm an NRA member. I'm an NRA supporter. But read the room. Postpone the convention a few weeks. Having a party in the state where 19 babies were just murdered, even if it was a convention for bakers, is not a good look," Carmine Sabia tweeted Friday morning. His remarks come after Salvador Ramos, 18, shot and killed 19 children and two teachers on Tuesday inside Robb Elementary School in Uvalde using two AR-15-style rifles that he purchased on his birthday a few days before the incident. Some Republicans supporting gun rights are expected to give speeches during the firearms event, including former President Donald Trump and Senator Ted Cruz . Texas Governor Greg Abbott is also listed as a speaker, but … [Read more...] about Outspoken NRA member breaks with gun group over convention: “Read the room”

European Union can agree Russia oil embargo or seek alternative: Germany
The European Union (EU) can still strike a deal on a Russian oil embargo in the coming days or look to "other instruments" if no agreement is reached, Germany's Economy Minister Robert Habeck said at Group of Seven talks in Berlin on May 26. The EU executive European Commission proposed the embargo as the harshest sanction yet on Russia after its invasion of Ukraine . But talks have failed to produce a breakthrough so far, with Hungary, Moscow's closest ally in the EU, vetoing the move. Mr. Habeck said all EU countries had to reduce their oil dependency. "That includes Hungary. If you take that as the basis of discussion, then an agreement should be possible. If you include other topics into the question of an oil embargo it will be very, very difficult," he said. Also Read Explained | How dependent is Europe on Russia for its energy needs? Governor saw deadly arrest video months before prosecutors
Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards and his top lawyers privately watched a key video of Black motorist Ronald Greene drawing his final breaths in his deadly 2019 arrest six months before prosecutors even knew the footage existed. While the Democratic governor has distanced himself from allegations of a cover-up in the explosive case by contending evidence was promptly turned over to authorities, an Associated Press investigation found that neither Edwards, his staff nor the state police he oversees acted urgently to get the crucial footage into the hands of those with the power to charge the white troopers seen stunning, punching and dragging Greene. The video shows a bruised and bloody Greene going limp and drawing his final breaths — critical moments and audio that are absent from other footage turned over. It wouldn't reach prosecutors until nearly two years after Greene’s May 10, 2019, death on a rural roadside near Monroe. Now three years have passed and still no … [Read more...] about Governor saw deadly arrest video months before prosecutors

Anti-gun protesters stage “die-in” outside of Trump Tower
A group of protesters gathered peacefully Wednesday in front of one of Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump's New York City skyscrapers to protest his comment from January that he "could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody" without losing support from voters. About 40 people from the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence and other gun-control advocates gathered outside of the candidate's headquarters for the so called die-in demonstration. On the stretch in front of the building, they briefly laid down and covered themselves in white sheets to represent the 90 Americas who are killed by gun violence each day. Then they stood up and repeatedly chanted, "Ninety a day, no more, no way!" Some held signs that read, "Hey Trump, gun violence is not a joke," "Not one more [gun death]" and "Love Trumps hate." The entire event lasted just 10 minutes, but the participants said they hope Trump hears their message. "We don't think talking about killing people … [Read more...] about Anti-gun protesters stage “die-in” outside of Trump Tower
