Mystery hepatitis disease killing children might be linked to dogs: CDC

May 9, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

The Centres for Disease Control ( CDC ) is investigating whether an acute hepatitis virus that has killed five children in the U.S. and sickened dozens of others could be linked to pet dogs. Health officials in the U.S. have identified 109 cases of the mysterious hepatitis virus, which affects the liver. The cases, which are concentrated in pre-school children, occurred over the past seven months in 24 states and Puerto Rico. Around 90 percent of the children were hospitalized and 14 percent needed liver transplants, CDC Deputy Director for Infectious Diseases Jay Butler, told a press conference Friday. All were previously healthy. Similar cases have been reported outside the U.S. The World Health Organization ( WHO ) said that as of May 1 it had recorded 228 probable cases in 20 countries, the majority of which are in Europe and the U.S. A possible link between the unusual number of acute pediatric hepatitis cases and dogs originated with a report Friday from the U.K. … [Read more...] about Mystery hepatitis disease killing children might be linked to dogs: CDC

For Korean celebrities, drunk driving can also kill their career

May 24, 2022 by koreajoongangdaily.joins.com

Actor Kim Sae-ron is facing backlash after causing an accident while driving under the influence. [SCREEN CAPTURE] On May 18, actor Kim Sae-ron made headlines after she crashed into an electric transformer box while driving under the influence. She fled the scene, but was soon arrested and is currently under investigation. Kim issued a handwritten apology two days after her arrest, and while many international fans are choosing to view the incident as a mistake she can learn from, the domestic public opinion remains ice cold. This is not simply because Korean celebrities are expected to perfectly abide by moral standards in their personal lives or because Kim was known for her innocent image from her days as a child actor. Rather, Koreans’ reactions toward drunk driving has changed dramatically over the past decade. Kim crashed her car into an electric transformer box, causing a partial power outage in the vicinity. [ILGAN SPORTS] In Korea, apart from violent crimes, … [Read more...] about For Korean celebrities, drunk driving can also kill their career

Medical Expert: Why Unnecessary ER Visits Are on the Rise, and How We Can Support Urgent Care Needs

May 24, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

Unnecessary, inappropriate use or even overuse of emergency rooms/departments (EDs) continues to be a concern among healthcare professionals, hospital administrators and insurance companies. EDs are designed to offer access to medical care in times of true medical emergencies but are often used for convenient "after hours" care or as a replacement for a lack of primary care services available. Another area of concern is the continued rise of mental health and substance abuse issues, which presents unique and complex challenges in an emergency setting. In a report titled " Trends in the Utilization of Emergency Department Services, 2009-2018 ," the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services reported these statistics: There were more than 143 million ED visits in 2018 alone, with 20 million admissions and more than 123 million released. In 2017, more than 18% of adults reported visiting an ED during the year. ED visits accounted for 12.5% or $328.1 billion of national … [Read more...] about Medical Expert: Why Unnecessary ER Visits Are on the Rise, and How We Can Support Urgent Care Needs

May 23, 2022 by www.mirror.co.uk

Nichola Parris blinked away tears as she read the Mother’s Day card her son, Daniel, had chosen for Holly, the mother of his own child. Because by the time the card had arrived, Dan had died, aged just 23. To his friends and family, Dan, an electrician from Hastings, Kent , was the picture of health when he suddenly collapsed and died at work in February last year, the day before his daughter Olivia turned five months old. His family struggled to believe it when they were told he had suffered a young sudden cardiac death , which claims around two people under the age of 35 every day in the UK. Civil servant Nicky, 55, says: “Dan was a son any mother would be proud of. Six feet three inches tall, handsome with a beautiful smile, he was kind and caring. A real gentle giant. “He went to the gym regularly and loved fishing and his PlayStation. We just didn’t see this coming.” In the run-up to his death, Dan told his mother that he was feeling slightly short of breath, … [Read more...] about Dad, 23, dies of cardiac arrest after posting card to partner that arrived after death
