Friends who last saw each other in 1951 reunited at care home after 70 years
Two childhood friends have remarkably been reunited at a care home - after more than 70 years apart. Audrey Sishton and Margaret Moore, both 86, last saw each other in 1951 when they were best friends during the late 1940s and early 1950s at Belt Road School for Girls in Cannock, Staffordshire. However, the friends lost contact with each other and went separate ways after finishing school before going on to have their own families. Remarkably, despite both still living in the same area, Margaret and Audrey had only ever seen each other back in 1951 when they were both 15-years old . And now after an amazing coincidence, the former school friends have been reunited after Audrey moved into the same care home as Margaret in Littleton Lodge care home in Hednesford, Staffs. Fearing Loss of Jobs, Tea Garden Workers Up in Arms Against Proposed Airport in Assam’s Barak Valley
The proposed Greenfield Airport in Assam’s Barak Valley has stumbled upon a roadblock as protesting workers of the Dolu tea estate of Cachar fear the move will lead to job loss and have shown no signs of relenting despite repeated attempts to pacify them. The demarcation of the 325-hectare land for the proposed Dolu Greenfield Airport has been impeded several times due to massive resistance by the 1,700-odd workers of the garden. The administration of the district and police force, armed with anti-riot reinforcement, has made several visits to the garden but to no avail. “We are trying to remove this airport from our area for the last two to three months. There will be havoc if the airport comes up here. The poor shall perish completely and the administration visits only to pressure us. When the government says ‘Sab Ka Saath, Sab Ka Vikas’, then don’t we fall in the ‘sab’ bracket? We are poor and don’t understand much about the Memorandum of Understanding but one thing is for sure … [Read more...] about Fearing Loss of Jobs, Tea Garden Workers Up in Arms Against Proposed Airport in Assam’s Barak Valley
Couple have spent 50 years running a milk round together and have delivered 10m pints
A couple celebrated spending half a century running a milk round together by delivering their 10th million pint. Maureen, 83, and Derek Clancy, 84, have had to get up for work at 2am for the last 50 years - yet have never taken a day off. They say their happy and healthy life is down to “great milk” and plenty of fresh air. Maureen said: “I couldn’t imagine a life where I didn’t do this. “I’m 83, but I feel great and I don’t think we’ll be stopping anytime soon.” The couple said they used to run a supermarket in Leeds until a sales rep ‘changed their lives’ in 1970. The couple haven't missed a milk run since they started ( Image: Lee McLean / SWNS) The visitor mentioned a milk round which could fetch them £100 a week - a ‘little fortune’ at the time. Derek, an engineer, had always wanted to be a business owner and decided to ring Leeds Coop Dairy and was invited to follow a round that weekend. Five decades later, the couple have yet to miss a morning … [Read more...] about Couple have spent 50 years running a milk round together and have delivered 10m pints

Ariane Herrera Cardenas has always placed high expectations on herself, even in middle school, and the stakes have only increased as she prepares to graduate from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Early College in about two weeks. In the fall, the 18-year-old will become the first in her family to go to college and the burden to succeed is weighing on her. As a senior Ariane decided she needed to save money for college so she started working part-time at Home Depot. “The decisions I have to make right now are important for me to set an example for my siblings,” she said. She is not alone in her worries about the future. Colorado teens have faced heightened pressure to succeed academically and in extracurricular activities, such as sports, for more than a decade. Luxury silks woven over 25 years
In November 1616, Sir Thomas Roe, the English Ambassador to the Mughal Court presented a coach to emperor Jahangir from the East India Company. Jahangir was so disgusted with his gift, lined with ‘poor quality crimson China velvet’ that he ordered it to be dismantled and replaced the fabric with a richly patterned luxury silk, “the ground of it gold, mingled...with silk flowers, and the nails silver and double gilt.” W. Foster (ed.) Sir Thomas Roe’s Embassy, 1899 At a time when the demands of a capricious marketplace have made fashion props of art, design and craft, a show opens at the National Museum in New Delhi which is uncompromising in its rejection of trends and commerce. Pra-Kashi: Silk, Gold and Silver from the City of Light, produced by weaving specialist, Rahul Jain, curated by Pramod KG and sponsored by the Government of India and the Devi Art Foundation, presents 48 masterpieces in ‘luxury silk’ woven at the ASHA workshop in Varanasi over 25 years. ‘Luxury silk’, … [Read more...] about Luxury silks woven over 25 years
Top Tory risks fury in own party by saying unsuitable MPs were elected in 2017 and 2019
The Tory Commons leader has risked angering dozens of his own party's MPs by declaring people elected in snap elections were unsuitable. Mark Spencer made the eyebrow-raising comment in an interview with The House, Parliament's in-house magazine. He suggested unsuitable candidates were able to stand in the 2017 and 2019 elections because they were announced in a rush. He said all parties - but certainly the Conservatives - would deliver a "higher calibre" of candidates at the next election, because it won't be a surprise. It comes as Parliament faces mounting accusations of sleaze, sexism and bullying - and a raft of resignations, which sparked by-elections. He said: "I think we'll be in a much better place at the next general election , certainly in the [Conservative] party as we will have taken much more time to scrutinise people. There will be a much longer process.” Two Tory MPs quit in just a few days last week over scandals involving their behaviour. Mr Spencer … [Read more...] about Top Tory risks fury in own party by saying unsuitable MPs were elected in 2017 and 2019
