Paul Egan Detroit Free Press Published 6:00 AM EDT Oct 16, 2018 LANSING — A $35-million privately operated federal immigration detention center is being proposed for a former state prison site in Ionia, officials confirmed to the Free Press on Monday. Immigration Centers of America, which operates a similar civil detention facility in Virginia, was the sole bidder for the former Deerfield Correctional Facility, a state prison in Ionia that closed in 2009. The state has not yet signed off on the sale after the request for bids by the Michigan Land Bank Fast Track Authority, said Dennis Muchmore, the former chief of staff to Gov. Rick Snyder who is now a lobbyist working for the detention center company. Among other necessary steps, the federal government still needs to issue a request for proposals for a facility to hold about 500 to 600 immigration detainees, Muchmore said. Because it would involve only civil detention, the 166,000-square-foot facility would … [Read more...] about $35M immigration detention center proposed for Ionia

Share Tweet Share Email Comments Print A legal and political showdown is intensifying over a proposed rule change to block federal grant funding to health centers that perform abortions or make referrals for abortions, one Planned Parenthood supporters say will cripple women’s health and physicians’ freedom if successful. Lucas County Commissioners unanimously passed a resolution this week opposing the proposal. Rob Salem, a Toledo attorney and board member of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Ohio, introduced the resolution, saying the measure “essentially imposes a gag rule on health care providers” by preventing them from counseling patients about where to obtain a legal abortion. “It is unbelievable to me that there would be a proposed rule that would prohibit doctors from counseling women,” said Commissioner Carol Contrada, calling it an attack on poor people who “don’t have other options to receive … [Read more...] about Battle brewing over Trump proposal to separate abortion from Title X funding

Yes. That’s what I think we should do. It needs reform.”In addition to immigration enforcement and counterterrorism efforts, ICE’s mission includes stopping the illegal movement of people and goods. It also tackles money laundering, weapons smuggling, mass marketing fraud and cyber crimes.“Abolishing ICE would mean ending all of the agencies' programs and functions,” Cornyn said on the Senate floor Tuesday, calling the proposal "reckless and naive."“ICE does a lot more than just what we see at the border with these children,” Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Austin, chairman of the House Homeland … [Read more...] about Political red meat: Are proposals to abolish ICE as unrealistic as calls to dissolve the IRS?

Read on for a look at what Title X is and what critics have to say about the Trump administration’s proposal. What is Title X? Title X is a federal grant program that helps family planning groups “offer a broad range of acceptable and effective family planning methods and services (including natural family planning methods, infertility services and planning for adolescents),” according to the Department of Health and Human Services.
