A California park called Negro Bar will finally be renamed after years of debate over its racist origins, state officials said Friday. The park in Folsom, a predominantly white city near state capital Sacramento, was originally named after Black miners who worked the California gold rush in the area in the late 1840s. It was frequently referred to by locals and even the San Francisco Chronicle by the even more offensive N-word slur until around a century ago. In a new report, California’s park department called the controversy “one of the more long-standing park facility naming issues” it faces as it moves to “identify and remove residual derogatory place names.” The department had ruled against renaming the park in 1999, with some reportedly raising concerns that a change would mean “loss of recognition… to African American presence and participation in the California Gold Rush.” But an online petition launched by a food delivery app driver who spotted a roadside sign four … [Read more...] about California to Rename ‘Negro Bar’ Park After Years of Debate

Facing closure, S.F.’s Club Deluxe to seek legacy business status
The owner of Club Deluxe , a cherished Haight-Ashbury jazz bar reportedly planning to close this month, plans to apply for legacy status in San Francisco in an effort to help keep the business open, said the nonprofit San Francisco Heritage. The nonprofit, which advocates for historic preservation and helps small businesses apply for legacy recognition, is in the process of helping Sarah Wilde, the owner of Club Deluxe, apply to receive legacy status for the business, said Kerri Young, the communications and programs manager at SF Heritage. Why Nob Hill’s Tahona Mercado will never carry celebrity-owned tequila
Steven Sadri often recalls a recurring problem from years ago when he lived in Nob Hill. Whenever he needed high-quality Mexican products, he often struggled to find them nearby. Once Sadri and his wife, Emily Sadri, started thinking about San Francisco’s cityscape, they realized that it lacked a Mexican specialty store. “Why isn't there a place to pick up fresh heirloom masa made in Oaxaca? Why isn't there a place to pick up hand-pressed flour tortillas? These were questions we wanted to answer,” Steven said. So they created their own store. The couple founded Tahona Mercado at the corner of Leavenworth and Sacramento streets last August. Since opening the Mexicatessen, Tahona Mercado has stayed true to its ethos of presenting a curated list of Mexican foods made by small, local Bay Area businesses, as well as imported goods from south of the border. First, there were clean beauty products, then clean cleaning products , and now clean weed. It’s about to be everywhere in the Golden State and it’s a lot more than a Goop-ification -of-ganja marketing ploy. So what, exactly, is clean weed? Why should you care about what chemicals may be in your pot products as long as they test below state-mandated levels? And finally, if you decide to board the chemical-free cannabis train, how do you find it on your local dispensary shelf? (Hint: It’s not going to be labeled “clean weed.”) What is clean weed, anyway? If the whole notion of “clean weed” has you scratching your head and muttering,“Dude, it comes from a plant , so how much cleaner can it be,” think of it like fruits and vegetables grown with the use of chemical fertilizers and … [Read more...] about ‘Clean weed’ is about to be everywhere in California.
