Embattled Uvalde School Police Chief Resigns from City Council After Shooting

July 2, 2022 by www.breitbart.com

Uvalde school district Police Chief Pete Arredondo resigned from his newly elected seat on the City Council. The chief is blamed by Texas Department of Public Safety officials for delays in responding to the Robb Elementary School Shooting on May 24. Just weeks before the school shooting that left 21 people dead, voters in Uvalde elected Arredondo to a seat on the City Council, the Uvalde Leader-News reported . In the days that followed the shooting, officials delayed the swearing-in ceremony. “After much consideration, I regret to inform those who voted for me that I have decided to step down as a member of the city council for District 3,” Arredondo said in a written statement. “The mayor, the city council, and the city staff must continue to move forward without distractions. I feel this is the best decision for Uvalde.” The Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District placed Arredondo on administrative leave on June 22, the local newspaper reported. At $90,750 per … [Read more...] about Embattled Uvalde School Police Chief Resigns from City Council After Shooting

DTC for combined effort to avoid overloading of school autos

July 2, 2022 by www.thehindu.com

Schools in the district reopen on July 5 (Tuesday) and Deputy Transport Commissioner N. Sivaram Prasad has urged managements of schools, parents, and autorickshaw drivers and owners to come together to make the ride of the children a “safe” one by following a new standard operating procedure (SOP). Managements of schools that witnesses its students coming by autorickshaw should keep a regular register noting down the details of autorickshaw number, driver’s name and details, how many children are ferried in it (beyond the allowed capacity or as per norms) and hold a monthly parent-teacher meeting to tell parents about the danger of overloading the vehicle. “Taking a lesson from the recent incident in which five persons were charred to death in Tadimarri mandal, parents must insist on sending their wards only if a permitted number of students are ferried and help the Transport Department and the district police to make roads safer for everyone,” said Mr. Sivaram Prasad. Following … [Read more...] about DTC for combined effort to avoid overloading of school autos

New York shuts down Olivet University amid federal money-laundering probe

July 2, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

New York shut down Olivet University's operations in the state, saying the Evangelical Christian college was still largely run by a group of David Jang disciples linked to a 2018 criminal conspiracy. Jang, a Korean American cleric, founded Olivet in 2000. His followers are now in the crosshairs of Department of Homeland Security investigators probing whether the university was part of a scheme to launder money for criminals in China and the United States. The stinging rebuke by New York's Deputy Commissioner of Education cited "a pattern of mismanagement" at the university and its ties to "criminal activity" in ending Olivet's authorization to operate credit-bearing courses or programs in New York. (Olivet's campuses in Tennessee and California are likely to also come under scrutiny, and DHS may revoke Olivet's authorization to enroll international students.) The education department's decision to close the Olivet campuses in Manhattan and Dover, New York, after a two-year … [Read more...] about New York shuts down Olivet University amid federal money-laundering probe

6 months’ home confinement for ex-USC coach in college scam

June 29, 2022 by www.independent.co.uk

A former University of Southern California soccer coach who took bribes in exchange for helping unqualified kids into the school was sentenced Wednesday to six months in home confinement after cooperating with authorities investigating the college admissions scandal. Prosecutors had not been seeking home confinement or prison time for Ali Khosroshahin, citing his quick acceptance of responsibility and his help in prosecuting others in the massive case. But U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani in Boston decided that prosecutors' recommendation of time served wasn't enough, noting that Khosroshahin dragged his assistant coach into the corrupt scheme, among other things. Khosroshahin, who was the head women's soccer coach from 2007 to 2013, appeared to fight back tears as he apologized to USC, his former athletes, his family and the deserving students who missed out on an admissions spot because of his “lies and greed.” “I want to thank the government for bringing this … [Read more...] about 6 months’ home confinement for ex-USC coach in college scam

Liz Cheney is walking a fine line as she tries to fend of primary challengers

July 1, 2022 by www.independent.co.uk

On Tuesday, Representative Liz Cheney led the questioning of former Trump administration aide Cassidy Hutchinson about the former actions on January 6, 2021. But on Thursday evening, she was the one hit with a hail of questions as she faced off against four different primary challengers trying to unseat her from Wyoming’s at-large congressional district. Cheney is persona non grata in the Republican Party thanks to her vote to impeach former president Donald Trump and her continued criticisms of the party’s fealty to him. Her apostasy has already seen her ousted as House Republican Conference chairwoman, and has led Trump and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy to back her main challenger, Harriet Hageman. Yet despite all this, MCheney has doubled down on her critiques of the party – not least in a speech at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library this week, in which she described what has befallen the US as a tragedy. “And the tragedy is that there are politicians in … [Read more...] about Liz Cheney is walking a fine line as she tries to fend of primary challengers

Taliban supreme leader prays for Afghanistan’s earthquake victims

July 1, 2022 by www.thehindu.com

The Taliban's supreme leader offered prayers on July 1 for Afghanistan's earthquake victims during a speech to Islamic clerics in Kabul. The tremor in June killed more than 1,000 people in the eastern part of the country . State radio aired Haibatullah Akhundzada's speech live on Friday from the gathering in Kabul, where thousands of Islamic clerics and tribal elders are gathering for the first time since seizing power in Afghanistan in August. Women were not allowed to attend. Mr. Akhundzada's appearance added symbolic heft to the meeting and the decisions the group is considering about Afghanistan's future. The Taliban are under international pressure to be more inclusive as they struggle with Afghanistan's humanitarian crises. The powerful earthquake killed more than 1,000 people in eastern Afghanistan, igniting yet another crisis for the struggling country and further underscoring the Taliban's limited capabilities and isolation. Overstretched aid groups already keeping … [Read more...] about Taliban supreme leader prays for Afghanistan’s earthquake victims

China’s Xi visits changed Hong Kong for handover anniversary

June 30, 2022 by www.thehindu.com

Chinese leader Xi Jinping arrived Thursday in Hong Kong to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the British handover of a city that his rule has transformed from a global hub known for its political freedoms to one that is much more tightly controlled by the Communist Party. In a staged event carried live on Chinese TV, students and others lined the platform of a high-speed rail station and packed a red carpet to greet the leader making his first trip outside of mainland China in nearly 2 ½ years — a choice that underscored Hong Kong's ever-closer ties to the mainland. Waving small red Chinese and Hong Kong flags, the students chanted “Welcome, welcome! Warm welcome!” while city leader Carrie Lam greeted Mr. Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan. Under Mr. Xi's leadership, China has reshaped Hong Kong, cracking down on protests, imposing a strict national security law used to silence dissent, introducing a more "patriotic" curriculum in schools, and revamping election laws to keep opposition … [Read more...] about China’s Xi visits changed Hong Kong for handover anniversary

China’s Xi swears in new Hong Kong leader John Lee

July 1, 2022 by www.thehindu.com

Chinese President Xi Jinping officiated the swearing-in ceremony of Hong Kong's new leader John Lee on Friday as the city marked the 25th anniversary of its return to Chinese rule after being pulled in recent years under much tighter Communist Party control. Mr. Lee, a former security official who oversaw the crackdown on dissent in the city since the 2019 pro-democracy protests , pledged to uphold the city's mini-constitution, the Basic Law, and bear allegiance to Hong Kong. He also pledged to be accountable to the central government in Beijing. His inauguration followed a morning flag-raising ceremony attended by Mr. Lee, outgoing city leader Carrie Lam and several hundred other people. Mr. Xi, who is making his first trip off the mainland in 2 1/2 years, was not present at the ceremony. On his arrival Thursday, Mr. Xi told well-wishers that Hong Kong has overcome many challenges over the years and had been “reborn from the ashes” with “vigorous vitality," in an … [Read more...] about China’s Xi swears in new Hong Kong leader John Lee
