In reality, the newly fortified structure commemorated with a plaque bearing his name and those of top immigration and homeland security officials was a long-planned replacement for an old barrier. It is one of a handful of projects that total $1 billion to replace existing barriers and build new ones across the border. Horror writer Stephen King would so relish watching President Donald Trump debate his border wall with another critically acclaimed author that King offered in a tweet Saturday to pay $10,000 to see it happen.King was responding to a tweet by Don Winslow, author of a new book coming out later this month called The Border. The book is the final offering of Winslow’s fictional trilogy on drug wars involving the Mexican cartels.Winslow is something of an expert on the southern border, which he has researched extensively for his books. He says he has walked “every mile” of it. He believes that Trump’s wall comes from “cuckoo land” and that the president has concocted a “fictional emergency” stringing together a handful of real events to create a fake world of chaos and crime.“The narrative that Trump and his allies create is a flat-out lie about chaos on the border, when the people who live there, as I do, have reported the … [Read more...] about Stephen King offers $10,000 for a debate on the Trump border wall
Democrats have already dropped hints of what their response to President Donald Trump’s address Tuesday evening from the Oval Office on the border crisis will be. The networks have granted Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) airtime to respond. Their message will be that there is no crisis that merits building a barrier on the border. The only crisis, to them, is the partial government shutdown. As Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) said last week, responding to the suggestion Trump may declare an emergency so he can order the military to build the barrier: “There is no national emergency on the southern border.” He described the idea as “stealing resources from the Defense Department.” The real solution to what he called the “complex issues at our southern border” — which are not an emergency, mind you — is “comprehensive immigration reform.” The idea that there is no crisis at … [Read more...] about Democrats Preview Response to Trump Oval Office Speech: ‘There Is No National Emergency on the Southern Border’
WASHINGTON – As the budget standoff between President Donald Trump and congressional Democrats grinds into the third week of a partial government shutdown, the White House has floated the idea that Trump might invoke emergency powers to build his proposed wall on the Mexican border without lawmakers' approval. That route could resolve the immediate crisis by giving Trump a face-saving way to sign spending bills that do not include funding for his wall. But it would be an extraordinarily aggressive move — at a minimum, a violation of constitutional norms — that would most likely thrust the wall's fate into the courts. Here is a primer on whether Trump can use emergency powers to proceed with the project without explicit congressional permission. What are emergency powers? The president has the authority to declare a national emergency, which activates enhancements to his executive powers by essentially creating exceptions to rules that normally constrain him. The idea … [Read more...] about What are Trump’s national emergency powers, and can he use them to build a wall?
