Army vehicles were so decrepit that repair crews were stationed roughly every 15 miles. Some officers were so out of shape that the military budgeted $1.5 million to re-size standard uniforms. That was the Russian military more than a decade ago when the country invaded Georgia, according to the defense minister at the time . The shortcomings, big and small, were glaring enough that the Kremlin announced a complete overhaul of the military to build a leaner, more flexible, professional force. But now, almost three months into Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, it is clear the Kremlin fell woefully short of creating an effective fighting machine. Russian forces in Ukraine have underperformed to a degree that has surprised most Western analysts, raising the prospect that President Vladimir V. Putin’s military operation could end in failure. By any measure, despite capturing territory in the south and east, the Russian military has suffered a major blow in Ukraine. It has been … [Read more...] about Russia Planned a Major Military Overhaul. Ukraine Shows the Result.

Magic looking for luck to turn their way in NBA’s draft lottery
The Orlando Magic know as well as any other team the luck and misfortune that can come with the NBA’s draft lottery. They’re hoping luck will turn their way for the first time in over a decade during Tuesday’s 38th installment of the lottery. The lottery will start at 8 p.m. in Chicago and will be broadcast on ESPN. The Magic were on the receiving end of a lot of luck in their infancy, winning back-to-back No. 1 picks in 1992 and ‘93 — selections that led to Orlando drafting Shaquille O’Neal and acquiring Penny Hardaway, the linchpins of the Magic’s early success in the mid-90s. The Magic later won the ‘04 lottery, leading to the drafting of Dwight Howard, the backbone of six consecutive playoffs appearances, including the 2009 Finals. Since then, the Magic have either stayed at or fallen from their pre-lottery positioning. While it isn’t known if this year’s draft class will have the kind of franchise-changing prospects that could propel the Magic to similar success … [Read more...] about Magic looking for luck to turn their way in NBA’s draft lottery
Think NIL blew up college sports? California is going for the knockout with new bill
Three years after California took the lead in the battle for college athlete rights as the first state to legalize name, image and likeness payments to players, another potentially game-changing bill is on the move through the state legislature in Sacramento. Senate Bill 206, signed into law by Gov. Gavin Newsom in the fall of 2019, made it illegal for the NCAA universities to prohibit third parties from paying college athletes for use of their NILs in endorsements, sponsorships and other appearances. But it did not ask school athletic departments to alter their budgets, which allowed for an easy passageway. In contrast, Senate Bill 1401, named the “College Athlete Race and Gender Equity Act,” cuts right to the heart of the collegiate model and the ideals of amateurism. SB 1401 would require California schools to share 50% of annual revenues in football and men’s and women’s basketball with the athletes, initiating a new era of “pay for play” — and what college sports leaders fear … [Read more...] about Think NIL blew up college sports? Tax Filings Reveal BLM Co-founder Patrisse Cullors’ Lavish Charity Spending
Black Lives Matter (BLM) co-founder Patrisse Cullors liked to splash the charity’s funds around, according to tax documents filed with the IRS, with her brother and child’s father both benefiting from handsome cash payments in return for various services. Although the May 11 filing, first reported by the Washington Examiner , does not reveal the exact amount Paul Cullors takes home yearly, it does state he is one of the two highest-compensated employees. Celebrity chef Raymond Blanc-run business accused of “ecological vandalism”
A top hotel and restaurant run by celebrity chef Raymond Blanc in England has been accused of "ecological vandalism" - by "destroying" a meadow of wildflowers. Villagers in Great Milton say the owners of Le Manoir aux Quat'Saisons have mowed the field for "no reason" - during "No Mow May." Pictures of the meadow before and after show a stark contrast - with the vibrant green field now looking brown and dead - like a "desert." The 10.5 acre (4 hectare) field is often used by dog walkers and villagers, and sits behind the hotel that owns and maintains the land. The restaurant has two Michelin stars and is owned by LVMH, which acquired it from Belmond Ltd in December 2018. The eaterie is run by French chef Blanc, 72, and the group has applied for planning permission to create a new wellness spa, bistro and Raymond Blanc academy on its land. It claims that the mowing was part of necessary and overdue maintenance. But it was criticized for having performed the work during "No … [Read more...] about Celebrity chef Raymond Blanc-run business accused of “ecological vandalism”
Amber Heard’s reference to “bruise kit” makeup goes viral
Video footage of Amber Heard referring to her makeup palette during testimony as a "bruise kit"—before quickly correcting herself—has gone viral on TikTok. Heard, 36, returned to Virginia's Fairfax County Circuit Courthouse on Monday for her defamation trial with ex-husband Johnny Depp , who has sued her for saying she was a domestic abuse survivor in a 2018 op-ed for The Washington Post . While Depp, 58, was not named in the article, the actor's lawyers have argued that it was obvious she was referring to him. Depp filed a $50 million lawsuit against Heard, who has responded by countersuing for $100 million for nuisance. As she returned to the stand, Heard emotionally alleged that she had been beaten by Depp during their ill-fated relationship, which ended in 2016. For his part, Depp had earlier testified that he, too, had been physically abused by his Rum Diary co-star Heard, who he accused of throwing a large bottle of vodka at him, resulting in injuries that … [Read more...] about Amber Heard’s reference to “bruise kit” makeup goes viral
Queen’s surprise visit a “very positive” sign for attendance at jubilee
Queen Elizabeth II has made a surprise visit to open a new railway named after her, raising hopes she will play a prominent role in her Platinum Jubilee celebrations. The 96-year-old monarch has been experiencing what Buckingham Palace has called "episodic mobility problems" significant enough to mean she could not attend the State Opening of Parliament, when she traditionally sets out the government's annual agenda. Yet on Tuesday the queen officially opened the long-anticipated Elizabeth Line at Paddington Station, central London. It was her second in-person visits outside of royal palaces within days, arriving hot on the heels of a trip to the Royal Windsor Horse Show on Sunday. "Definitely things are looking up," Ingrid Seward, author of Prince Philip Revealed , told Newsweek . "I think she's off to Scotland for a few days to rest now. She always does go up this time of year. It's very positive." The jubilee weekend could be a busy time for the 96-year-old Monarch, … [Read more...] about Queen’s surprise visit a “very positive” sign for attendance at jubilee
