South Dakota Gov. Noem gets emphatic win with AG’s removal
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 8 PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — The South Dakota Senate's decision this week to remove Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg from office was an emphatic victory for Gov. Kristi Noem, whose hard-driving effort to oust her fellow Republican likely sealed his fate even as some GOP lawmakers backed him. Noem, who has sprung to national prominence within the party and is widely considered a potential 2024 White House contender, began pushing Ravnsborg to step down within days after he struck and killed a pedestrian with his car in September 2020. He refused but was removed Tuesday through impeachment proceedings, with the Senate voting to convict the first-term Republican and then — unanimously — prohibiting him from holding public office again. Noem pressed impeachment through the Republican-controlled Legislature, providing crucial support on an effort that at times faced … [Read more...] about South Dakota Gov. Alec Burks recovering from offseason foot surgery, could affect trade value ahead of draft
Alec Burks’ offseason started with left foot surgery and could end on another team. The Knicks guard, a trade candidate around Thursday’s NBA draft, is expected to recover by training camp, sources confirmed. Although news of Burks’ surgery surfaced Wednesday, it occurred soon after the regular season ended in mid-April and the area had been bothering him for a while, a source said. With Derrick Rose and Kemba Walker sidelined for most of last season, the 30-year-old Burks became the starting point guard and logged a career-high 2,318 minutes. He averaged 11.7 points and five rebounds but isn’t viewed as a longterm answer. Burks is guaranteed about $10 million next season, which the Knicks are trying to unload for cap space to chase Mavericks guard Jalen Brunson in free agency, according to sources. Among the other players the Knicks are attempting to deal – Nerlens Noel, Kemba Walker and Evan Fournier – Burks’ deal represents the easiest to shed. He also has a $10.5 … [Read more...] about Alec Burks recovering from offseason foot surgery, could affect trade value ahead of draft

Op-Ed: The things I thought I couldn’t survive made me into a comedian
Don’t expect to laugh at my origin story just because I’m a comedian. Anyone who makes their living making people laugh will tell you: The line between comedy and tragedy is razor thin. The road to having my own one-hour special on HBO Max was a bumpy one, a rider. Where I’m from, that means a tough one. By the time I was 6, I had been kidnapped twice — once by my mother, who took me from my father in the Dominican Republic, and then by my grandmother, who snatched me from New York to get me away from my mother’s boyfriend and took me to Miami. I had a young mom, so my grandmother pretty much raised me. My young uncles were running amok, and we all lived under the same roof. I knew too much to be just a kid. Growing up poor came with violence, hunger, instability and the list goes on. The daily struggle for survival and being aware of it is something I shouldn’t have known about at such a young age. To counter the weight of it, I would sneak into my Uncle Davie’s room … [Read more...] about Op-Ed: The things I thought I couldn’t survive made me into a comedian

Nike to fully quit Russia after Ukraine invasion
Global sportswear brand Nike has revealed it will fully pull out of Russia three months after halting its business in the country due to the Ukraine war. The US group said it will scale down its operations in Russia over the “coming months”, having announced a temporary suspension on March 3. It marks the latest major Western brand to announce the permanent withdrawal from Russia over its invasion of Ukraine in February, following the likes of fellow US giants Google , Starbucks, Coca-Cola and McDonald’s. Big UK firms have also left Russia in their droves, including Marks & Spencer and BP, while the UK Government has joined counterparts worldwide in unleashing a raft of damaging economic sanctions on President Vladimir Putin’s regime. South Dakota Leaders Announce Special Session to ‘Save Lives’
South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem and leaders from the State Legislature released a joint announcement regarding their plan to form a special session to “save lives” and to support women who are effected by the overturning of Roe v. Wade. In the press release , Governor Noem asserted that abortion victimizes both the unborn and the mother, going on to say that leaders in the state must “help mothers in crisis know that there are options and resources available for them.” Noem also added that abortion must be made “unthinkable,” not just illegal. The release also explained that South Dakota’s trigger law is effective immediately, with the state now banning all abortions unless “there is appropriate and reasonable medical judgment that performance of an abortion is necessary to preserve the life of the pregnant female.” South Dakota is only one of several states that has a trigger law that will go into effect to ban or limit abortion now that the Roe v. Wade … [Read more...] about South Dakota Leaders Announce Special Session to ‘Save Lives’
