A woman has taken to Tiktok to share her fury after her mother’s bills rose from £120 to £820 overnight. Mairéad Stevens, 38, from Surrey, said that her pensioner mother, who works part time as a nurse, “won’t be able to live” with these current charges. Mairéad was at home on July 28 when her mother, Noreen McEntee, 66, called in distress after receiving a text from her bank informing her that British Gas had removed £540 from her account. When she called the company to ask for an explanation, she was reportedly told that she was in debt to the company. Mairéad, who works as an accountant, told NeedToKnow.online: “A female call agent forcefully told my mum that she owed them money and her monthly payments going forward for both would be £820. "This was a lot more than her usual bill of £60 for gas and £60 for electricity.” Noreen McEntee and granddaughter Maggie in 2022 ( Image: Jam Press/Mairéad Stevens) Mairéad travelled to her mother’s and called British Gas … [Read more...] about Woman furious as her mum’s British Gas bill ‘shoots from £120 to £820 a MONTH’

British Vogue deserves praise for hiring Edward Enninful as editor | Opinion
Most people understand that Vogue is not just a brand, it's an institution. Any company or product that can cite 100 years of history could rightfully be described that way. As a brand name it's recognizable by, basically, everyone on Earth. At the beginning of this year a friend, who was only one year on from launching her new fashion label, told me her designs were in consideration to feature on Vogue 's April cover. I almost lost my mind and I couldn't understand why she wasn't losing hers. As a new label, to even be considered seemed game-changing to me. I mean, that's Vogue magazine. With all that history though comes tradition. At a certain point, to stay relevant and fresh, it becomes necessary to loosen that grip on tradition, take stock of the current landscape and look for the best way forward. Naturally, the easiest thing to do is just to replicate what came before, safe in the knowledge that continuing the status quo probably won't get you fired. But it probably … [Read more...] about British Vogue deserves praise for hiring Edward Enninful as editor | Opinion

[email protected]: Meet 7 Brave Warrior Queens of South India Who Fought for Freedom from British
As the country celebrates its 75th Independence Day, News18 brings you a list of fiery women from the southern part of India who played a significant role in India’s freedom struggle. There is a story from Karnataka that is often told to show the strength of women who fought against the invaders. Once a British revenue officer is said to have visited a village in Ankola to forcibly collect taxes. The women of this Shinganamakki village ensured that the officer did not find even a grain of food to eat or a drop of water to drink — all this to teach him a lesson. When he tried to make his own tea, they hid the utensils, tea leaves and sugar. This was one of the many innovative ways of showing they were against the imperialists. A look at the brave queen warriors of southern India and their inspiring tales: Rani Chenamma: The Queen Who Defied the Doctrine of Lapse The doctrine stated: “If the ruler of a state dies without a natural heir, the state would be ruled by the … [Read more...] about [email protected]: Meet 7 Brave Warrior Queens of South India Who Fought for Freedom from British
British PM candidate Rishi Sunak vows 20% income tax cut by 2029
Rishi Sunak, trailing in the race to become Britain's next prime minister, has vowed to slash the basic rate of income tax by 20% by 2029 in a potentially make-or-break throw of the dice by the former finance minister. Mr. Sunak, once seen as the favourite to replace Boris Johnson when he helped to steer the economy through the ravages of the COVID-19 pandemic, has struggled against his rival, Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, who has pledged immediate tax cuts. Mr. Sunak said he remained focused on tackling inflation but once that was achieved he would follow through on an already-announced plan to take 1 pence off income tax in 2024, and then take a further 3 pence off by the end of the next parliament, likely around 2029. Also read: Racism not a factor in British PM race, says Rishi Sunak The two pledges would take income tax from 20p to 16p. Mr. Sunak said the plan would mark the biggest income tax cut since the time of Margaret Thatcher. "It is a radical vision but it … [Read more...] about British PM candidate Rishi Sunak vows 20% income tax cut by 2029

Three British Women Disgusted By Spain’s Liberating Campaign Of Celebrating Beach Body Positivity
The Spanish government is campaigning for body positivity this summer and the world is all for it. But, very recently a few women came forth without intimating them or taking their permission. Just last week the Equality Minister of Spain received applauds from people across the globe for asking women in Spain to ditch “stereotypes” this summer and own their bodies taking into account the pressure that women undergo in order to conform to the societal notions of beauty. What people certainly did not expect out of this extremely progressive campaign was the fact that the basics of three women would be violated, who was seen in those pictures without their prior consent. BBC did an extensive reportage on the same and based on which we get to know that, Juliet Fitzpatrick who is a cancer survivor and someone who has undergone mastectomy claimed that a woman in one of the posters was actually made to be an inspiration taken from one of her pictures- her face was used on another … [Read more...] about Three British Women Disgusted By Spain’s Liberating Campaign Of Celebrating Beach Body Positivity
