Pakistan: Christian Asia Bibi Out of Prison and ‘Safe’
Various reports Wednesday afternoon revealed that Asia Bibi, a Pakistani Christian woman acquitted of blasphemy charges last week, has left prison and is onboard a flight at press time. Bibi’s acquittal had triggered protests attracting thousands demanding her death and the deaths of the Supreme Court justices who found her not guilty.Saif-ul-Malook, Bibi’s attorney, left the country for the Netherlands this week after facing several death threats from radical Islamists, many tied to the Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) party organizing protests. On Wednesday, the lawyer told Agence France-Presse that Pakistan had indeed freed Bibi. “I have been told that she is on a plane but nobody knows where she will land,” he reportedly said. India: Local Politician Calls Nun ‘Prostitute’ After Bishop Arrested for Raping Her
Authorities in India arrested a bishop Friday for allegedly sexually abusing a nun at a convent in the Indian state of Kerala 13 times between 2014 and 2016. Bishop Franco Mulakkal, 54, of Jalandhar has dismissed the allegations as “concocted,” reportedly claiming the accusations are a “cooked up story to wreak vengeance” for the actions taken by him on various complaints received against the victim, the British Pakistani Christian Association (BPCA) reported on Friday. Before the Catholic leader’s arrest, BPCA noted, “Bishop Franco Mulakkal has been temporarily removed from his post 2.5 months after the allegations surfaced, in a slow action that has been condemned by many Indian people of all diversities.” The unnamed 44-year-old nun logged a complaint with local police in June, claiming that the Catholic Church had failed to take action despite repeated appeals, BBC reported. “At first I had reported the attack to the superiors in the … [Read more...] about India: Local Politician Calls Nun ‘Prostitute’ After Bishop Arrested for Raping Her
Pakistan Caves to Islamist Mob, Agrees to Prevent Asia Bibi from Leaving Country
The government of Pakistan promised the radical Islamist Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) party this weekend it would begin a legal process to prevent Asia Bibi, a Christian mother of four acquitted of blasphemy last week, from leaving the country, a move almost certainly ensuring her death at the hands of a violent mob. Bibi was arrested in 2009 and sentenced to death in 2010 for allegedly insulting Muhammad, a charge she has denied for nearly a decade. Last week, the nation’s Supreme Court issued a ruling dismissing all charges against Bibi, asserting that insufficient evidence exists against her and that those who lied about her blasphemy themselves committed blasphemy by doing so.The Pakistani penal code proscribes a variety of punishments for blasphemy against Islam generally. Blasphemy against the person of Muhammad, however, demands a sentence of capital punishment. In response, TLP radicals and other Islamic groups flooded the streets of Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, … [Read more...] about Pakistan Caves to Islamist Mob, Agrees to Prevent Asia Bibi from Leaving Country
Voices in West Demand Asylum for Asia Bibi
Christian leaders, politicians, and activists in the West are urging their home countries and the international community to find a way to grant asylum to Asia Bibi, a follower of Christ under threat in Pakistan after the country’s supreme court overturned a death penalty verdict over blasphemy allegations. A deal reached by Islamabad and Islamists protesting Bibi’s acquittal may bar the Christian mother of five from leaving Pakistan. Some news outlets claim “several countries,” including France, Spain, and Italy, have offered asylum to the Christian mother of five. However, the anti-persecution British Pakistani Christian Association (BPCA) reported on November 4: “The family of Asia and long-term guardian Joseph Nadeem are yet to be offered asylum in any western nation despite numerous media reports.” That day, the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Wilson Chowdhry, the BPCA chairman who has launched a petition calling for asylum for Bibi and … [Read more...] about Voices in West Demand Asylum for Asia Bibi
