0 Have your say Jeremy Corbyn has refused to say that Brexit will definitely take place after Labour opened the door to a new referendum that could keep the UK in the EU. On the eve of his speech to the Labour conference in Liverpool, Mr Corbyn said his MPs would be ordered to vote against any Brexit deal that fails to meet the party’s six tests. That is now seen as a certainty since one of the tests is to maintain the “exact same benefits” as as EU membership.READ MORE: Keir Starmer: Labour 'not ruling out Remain' in new EU referendum "We will challenge the Government's terms for Brexit if they don't meet our six tests,” Mr Corbyn said in broadcast interviews. There was confusion over Labour’s stance on a second EU referendum after the shadow Brexit secretary Sir Keir Starmer made an unscripted commitment in a speech that “nobody is ruling out Remain as an option” on the ballot paper. It contracted earlier comments by … [Read more...] about Jeremy Corbyn refuses to say Brexit will definitely happen

In a veiled jab at US President Donald Trump, the Bank of England governor said protectionist rhetoric is currently just “talk and tweets” but said there are already signs that the global economy is taking a hit. “There are some tentative signs that this more hostile and uncertain trading environment may be dampening activity,” he said. “For example, survey measures of global export orders and manufacturing output have fallen back from highs at the start of this year, and growth in US and euro-area capital goods orders fell to zero in Q1.” Economic models by the Bank of England show that a 10 percentage point rise in tariffs between the US and all of its trading … [Read more...] about Central banks will not save economy in global trade war, Mark Carney warns
BRITISH taxpayers are set for a bumper Brexit windfall thanks to no longer having to elect MEPs. Scrapping next year's European Parliament ballot will save the UK £109 million, according to official figures. The saving comes on top of the cash we will recoup on our membership fee as national authorities have to fund the contests themselves. European elections are held every five years and see the UK send 73 MEPs to the parliament in Strasbourg. The last one, which took place in 2015, saw a turnout of just 35.6 per cent and yielded a bumper result for Ukip. Europeans will go to the polls in May next year, by which time Britain will already have left the bloc. That means taxpayers will make a multimillion pound saving according ministers, who revealed the figure in response to a parliamentary question. Officials said: "We estimate that not holding European Parliamentary elections will save British taxpayers at least £109 million next year. "This is in addition to the cost of … [Read more...] about Britain will save £100m after Brexit from not having to hold European elections
BRUSSELS believes Britain may not be able to perfect a futuristic new ‘Max Fac’ customs system for decades, the Sun can reveal. EU officials sarcastically predicted the Government’s hi-tech solution to the Irish border problem might not be ready until 2085. And they said the “virtual reality” plan - championed by Brexiteers - could add several minutes onto lorry checks causing a “nightmare” at Dover. As a result European leaders could keep renewing the transition period until an answer to the Irish conundrum is agreed. A senior EU official told The Sun: “Max Fac is a bit of virtual reality, it’s not available in the real world. It’s based on a couple of premises not a single country would be able to accept. “The costs are big and even then you don’t end up with a smooth border. You could perhaps have Max Fac in 2085, but it’s not readily available now or even in three to five years. It would be the miracle … [Read more...] about Brexit may not happen for another 65 YEARS as Britain ‘won’t be able to wrench itself free from Customs Union’
MEDDLING peers inflicted another THREE defeats on Theresa May last night as they kept up their fight against Brexit. Pro-EU Lords thrashed the Government on wrecking amendments on the PM's flagship EU Withdrawal Bill. In fiery exchanges one even sneered that the Bill was like legislation used by Adolf Hitler in 1930 Germany. And a Tory expenses scandal peer dubbed 'Lord Moat' sparked fury after leading an ambush to seize control of Brexit talks. It is the ninth time that the Prime Minister has seen her Bill defeated in the upper chamber in recent weeks. And if MPs back the main change when the Bill comes back to the Commons, it could trigger a constitutional crisis. What is the EU Withdrawal Bill? The government has announced it will repeal the 1972 European Communities Act, which brought Britain into the EU in the first place. The act meant European law took precedence over laws passed in Parliament. Britain will now have the Great Repeal Bill, now known as the European … [Read more...] about What did last night’s Lords vote mean for Brexit and what happens next?
