Prince William condemned a 2018 British immigration scandal in his most political comments yet after seeing racism firsthand at football matches, a royal author told Newsweek . The Duke of Cambridge criticized the U.K. government over the Windrush Scandal, which saw the Home Office wrongly deport Caribbean people who had been invited to Britain generations earlier following World War II. The government has paid or offered £41 million ($50 million) in compensation to victims, according to an announcement on its website in January 2022. William not only condemned the way the Caribbean community was "profoundly wronged" but added that "discrimination remains an all too familiar experience for Black men and women in Britain in 2022." It comes after he was heavily criticized during an ill-fated tour of the Caribbean , set to the back drop of protests calling for slavery reparations. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle 's interview with Oprah Winfrey and its allegations of … [Read more...] about William’s racism comment is criticism of government but “he feels strongly”

The surprising Newsom, Pelosi and Harris ties with the Getty oil dynasty
There are few true American dynasties. The Rockefellers, Mellons, Astors and DuPonts come to mind. The Gettys, too, are on that list. Founded by oil baron J. Paul Getty who moved under the radar until his "outing" as the richest American by Fortune magazine in 1957, the subsequent four generations of his family have been in the spotlight navigating fields from environmentalism to fashion to business, music, digital archives, arts, LGBTQ rights and politics. With five wives, the patriarch of the dynasty, J. Paul Getty, fathered four sons who lived to adulthood, and the family tree has flowered to some 19 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren. Family scandals and internal squabbles such as Getty's son Gordon's (unsuccessful) seven-year court challenge over the family trust in the 1960s and the kidnapping of his eldest grandson in 1973, as well as subsequent battles with drug addiction, depression, adultery and internal squabbles over the sale of … [Read more...] about The surprising Newsom, Pelosi and Harris ties with the Getty oil dynasty
It Feels Like 1979 Again
Everything seems to be falling apart. The Russians are occupying a neighboring state. A foreign crisis is causing spikes in the price of oil. Inflation is the worst it’s been in some 40 years. A Democratic president is facing the lowest approval ratings of his term and has openly admitted that he knows the public is in a foul mood. A virus is on the loose and making a lot of people sick. Even the music charts are a mess, a horrid stew of disco and wimp-rock hits. Wait. Disco? was at 30 percent approval , and, yes, an influenza epidemic broke out. Whether music is better now than at the end of the 1970s, I will leave to you. (I was not a fan of the charts in those days, but I will still take the Bee Gees over Harry Styles.) The parallels with 1979 and 1980 are conspicuous as we head into the homestretch before midterms and the election sprint to 2024. President Joe Biden’s supporters worry that he is no longer up to the job , and that his admission of the country’s mood … [Read more...] about It Feels Like 1979 Again
William says Caribbean community “profoundly wronged” by U.K. Government
Prince William, fresh from celebrating his 40th birthday, has made a politically charged speech marking "Windrush Day," a day of commemoration in Britain dedicated to a generation of Commonwealth nationals who helped rebuild the country after World War II. A scandal was uncovered in 2017 when it emerged that thousands of people who moved to Britain between 1948 and 1973—known as the "Windrush generation" after the name of a passenger liner that brought the first post-war Caribbean migrants to the U.K.—had been wrongly classed as illegal migrants, detained and in some cases deported. William's speech on Wednesday calling members of the Windrush generation "victims of racism" and "profoundly wronged" by the U.K. government is a rare example of the prince weighing in on a polarizing political issue and is likely to generate criticism. He said: "We know without question, that the Windrush Generation have made our culture richer, our services stronger, and our fellow countrymen … [Read more...] about William says Caribbean community “profoundly wronged” by U.K. Government
NIFFF Tackles LGBTQ+ Representation With Scream Queer Retrospective
Click here to read the full article. Heading into his first edition at the helm of the Neuchatel Intl. Fantastic Film Festival ( NIFFF ), artistic director Pierre-Yves Walder looked to land his white whale, setting his sights on a retrospective idea he’d dreamed up many years before. “In concrete terms, I’ve wanted to do this ever since I first applied to the festival,” Walder says of Scream Queer, a pet project that reflects on LGBTIQ+ representation through the lens of the fantastic. “I wanted to explore social elements through genre, which has always been a mirror for society, a place to express certain unmentionable ideas in abstract, using metaphor to explore subjects off limits in more direct approaches.” More from Variety Neuchatel Fantastic Film Festival Brings Genre Out of the Shadows Neuchatel Celebrates 20th Edition With Taiwan Spotlight, Environmental Theme NIFFF Tackles Godzilla, Digital Ecosystem With Industry Panels Showcasing 15 films … [Read more...] about NIFFF Tackles LGBTQ+ Representation With Scream Queer Retrospective
Alito’s ‘Dobbs’ Opinion Overturning ‘Roe’ Is Judicial Activism at Its Most Self-Deceptive
It’s happened : Roe v. Wade is overturned . Abortion will soon be illegal in two dozen states . In this country, according to the Supreme Court, women have no constitutional right to control their own bodies . But what really happened? According to the Court’s conservative majority, the Supreme Court is properly exercising its role to interpret the Constitution. As Justice Brett Kavanaugh put it in his concurrence to Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization , “the issue before this Court…is not the policy or morality of abortion. The issue before this Court is what the Constitution says about abortion.” And so Justice Samuel Alito’s 79-page opinion carefully and meticulously dissects Roe and explains why there is no “right to abortion” in the Constitution’s explicit language or our “nation’s history and traditions.” But that’s not really what happened, right? We all know, or should know, that Justices Alito, Barrett, Kavanaugh, and Gorsuch were all … [Read more...] about Alito’s ‘Dobbs’ Opinion Overturning ‘Roe’ Is Judicial Activism at Its Most Self-Deceptive
