Jennifer Lopez has lived more lives than most celebrities. She’s been a dancer and a movie star and a pop singer and an entrepreneur and a reality-TV mainstay and part of the reason for the existence of Google Images . She’s been box-office gold and box-office poison. She’s considered one of the most influential Latina celebrities in America, both revered and denigrated—though not always in equal measure . Consider it a minor miracle, then, that Halftime , the Netflix documentary about Lopez’s career, has room to trace more than 30 years of fame as well as follow her in the months leading up to her performance at the 2020 Super Bowl. Like other celebrity-endorsed portraits , Halftime feels both candid and safe. The director Amanda Micheli’s interviewees include only Lopez and members of her team—her parents, her manager, and, yes, Ben Affleck—and the behind-the-scenes footage comes across as familiar. Yet Halftime isn’t entirely a hagiography. After the … [Read more...] about No One Does a Comeback Like J. Lo

What is Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) Technology and How Does It Work?
Cars are now more connected than ever. And every time someone drives a modern vehicle a certain amount of data is generated, which typically goes to the automaker. But as connected car technology advances, automakers and governments are starting to explore how that could be leveraged to improve traffic, provide real-time updates to drivers on road conditions and cut down on crashes. Dubbed vehicle-to-everything (V2X), It's the on-road extension of "the internet of things," which is the term for a group of physical objects interconnected through a computer network. In this case, it's cars operating within a certain distance from one another. Here's a rundown of what V2X is, how it can be used and how soon it can be on the road. What are the different applications of V2X? There are numerous applications that researchers and manufacturers are exploring right now, Vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) technology allows vehicles within a certain distance from each other to share relevant … [Read more...] about What is Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) Technology and How Does It Work?
Senate passes first gun bill in 28 years, but it does less than 1994 law
The Senate overcame a decades-long legislative log jam by passing a bill intended to reduce gun violence, but left out a key provision from the last time Congress took up firearm safety. The Senate passed the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act on a 65-33 bipartisan vote Thursday evening. Spurred by the elementary school shooting Uvalde, Texas, and other recent massacres, the legislation seeks to keep firearms from dangerous individuals. However, gun control advocates pointed out that the bill doesn't reinstate the 1994 ban on semiautomatic military-style rifles that has been credited with reducing firearm-related violence. Fifteen Republicans senators joined Democrats in voting for the legislation, which allowed it to clear a legislative filibuster in the evenly divided chamber. "This is the sweet spot," said Republican Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the Senate's minority leader. McConnell, who has an A+ rating from the National Rifle Association, said the bill would make … [Read more...] about Senate passes first gun bill in 28 years, but it does less than 1994 law
Great Rail Sale branded a ‘headline grabbing gimmick’ that won’t help commuters
A government-backed “Great British Rail sale” offering cheap train tickets will not help hard-pressed commuters, critics say. The Department for Transport (DfT) said the offer was “further supporting families with the cost of living” at a time of high inflation . Around a million tickets will be reduced , some to less than £3, but overall that amounts to just 1% of all rail journeys available. But it will only target intercity travel at off-peak times. The fares include a single journey from London to Edinburgh for £22, Manchester to Newcastle for £10.30, and Birmingham to Bristol Temple Meads for £12.60. The cut-price tickets will only be available for a five-week period before the next half-term holiday, from April 25 to May 27, and are not expected to be available over the first May bank holiday weekend. But the scheme has been criticised by Labour and trade unions, who say it doesn't do anything to help commuters. An advert for the Great British Rail … [Read more...] about Great Rail Sale branded a ‘headline grabbing gimmick’ that won’t help commuters
School meal bill aims to keep kids fed after June 30
As the free school meals programs that allowed millions of students to eat for free for the last two years of pandemic come to an end, a bipartisan group of lawmakers is trying to keep this important lifeline to struggling families running with a new bill. On Tuesday, a array of politicians presented the "Keep Kids Fed Act of 2022," a bill that aims at amending and extending the government-approved pandemic-era waivers. Under the Child Nutrition COVID-19 Waivers approved by Congress via the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) in March 2020 through the Families First Coronavirus Response Act—signed into law by then-President Donald Trump —all students, regardless of their families' financial status, were entitled to eat a school meal for free. The programs are due to come to an end on June 30. Reimbursement rates for school food programs were also increased, and the USDA's Summer Food Service Program was extended to eliminate geographical requirements. However, … [Read more...] about School meal bill aims to keep kids fed after June 30
F1 news LIVE: Lewis Hamilton urged to step aside and retire from Formula 1
Formula 1’s rising popularity driven by Netflix series Formula 1 legends Sir Jackie Stewart and David Coulthard have urged Lewis Hamilton to ‘step aside’ and ‘retire’ from the sport to avoid the ‘pain’ of not being able to compete as he used to behind the wheel. Hamilton has struggled to adapt to Mercedes new W13 car in 2022 only finishing on the podium twice in nine races and has repeatedly been out-driven by teammate George Russell. He sits almost 100 points behind rival Max Verstappen in the standings and the Silver Arrows are still coming to terms with their car being the third-fastest on the grid. Stewart explained that he feels Hamilton is finding it difficult to handle the skill of his new teammate and doesn’t believe the seven-time wolrd champion can make it back to the top level of the sport saying: “He’s now struggling a little bit because he’s had a new teammate who’s been quicker than him in qualifying so far, which is gonna be difficult for him to handle. … [Read more...] about F1 news LIVE: Lewis Hamilton urged to step aside and retire from Formula 1
Lewis Hamilton ‘overwhelmed’ to finish on the podium at Canadian Grand Prix
Lewis Hamilton was left feeling “ecstatic” with his second podium of the season as he rolled back the years to take third place at the Canadian Grand Prix . The seven-time world champion has struggled with his Mercedes this season and only just made it to Montreal. The design of this year’s cars has led to some teams suffering from bouncing – known as porpoising – at high speeds, with Mercedes among the worst. Hamilton needed assistance to get out of his car following the Azerbaijan Grand Prix a week ago and required acupuncture and cryotherapy on his back to make it to the grid. The 37-year-old qualified fourth in the Montreal rain on Saturday and went one better in the race , claiming the 184th podium of his career but just his second of a difficult 2022. Max Verstappen keen not to ‘overdramatise’ F1’s porpoising problem in subtle dig at Mercedes
Max Verstappen has said Formula One does not need to “overdramatise” the issue of porpoising following complaints from some drivers, including Lewis Hamilton and George Russell , that it could pose a long-term injury risk. The ‘bouncing’ of cars along straights has been one of the main issues this season following the overhaul of rules and regulations, with some teams suffering more from the phenomenon than others. Mercedes have been particularly affected, with Russell warning of the potential “health consequences” of porpoising while Hamilton endured the “most painful race” of his career in Baku after suffering from severe back pain due to the bouncing. It led to the FIA introducing a controversial technical directive in an attempt to fix the problem, but Red Bull have reacted angrily as out of all the teams on the grid they have been the least affected by porpoising due to the design of their car. Red Bull have won the last six races, with Verstappen opening … [Read more...] about Max Verstappen keen not to ‘overdramatise’ F1’s porpoising problem in subtle dig at Mercedes

Male Sex Dolls: They’re Not Just For Sex, Actually
A decade ago, Samantha (who requested a pseudonym to protect her privacy), 45, experienced a tragedy. Her husband was involved in a serious car accident that resulted in him becoming paralyzed from the neck down and permanently impotent. “Any other woman in my position could have left him when they knew they would never have a sex life again. But I stayed by his side because I love him,” she said. It wasn’t easy. “I mourned the loss of our sex life — not just the sex, but the intimacy that came with it,” she said. “There were times when I sat and cried my heart out.” Her husband was upset to see his wife struggling, so he suggested she find a friend with benefits. She contemplated the idea, but eventually decided not to do it. “I was worried that if I got a fuck buddy, feelings could become involved,” she said. “And if that happened, our relationship wouldn't survive.” Her marriage suffered regardless. The couple, who live in Australia, began sleeping in separate … [Read more...] about Male Sex Dolls: They’re Not Just For Sex, Actually
