It has largely been described as the Miami Heat’s meaningless season finale, often along the lines of “The Miami Heat won six consecutive games to secure the No. 1 playoff seed in the Eastern Conference before losing their meaningless regular-season finale.” It turns out, a month after the fact, the 125-111 April 10 loss to the Orlando Magic at the Amway Center wasn’t so meaningless, after all. Instead, it potentially could stand between the Heat and homecourt advantage in the NBA Finals. With the Heat holding out virtually their entire primary rotation that evening in Orlando, and with the Golden State Warriors later that night defeating the New Orleans Pelicans, the Heat and Warriors closed the regular season with identical 53-29 records. Because Golden State swept the two-game season series, that would mean homecourt advantage for the Warriors in a potential NBA Finals against the Heat. Even though the Heat entered the playoffs as a No. 1 seed. And even though the … [Read more...] about With NBA down to final four, Heat ‘meaningless’ season-ending loss in Orlando could loom large
Q: Victor Oladipo will be the most important player off the Heat bench. His defense will greatly help against Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and Marcus Smart. That definitely will help Butler. Hopefully Tyler Herro comes through, but Victor will shine if given the minutes. – Juan, Miami Beach. A: That is a lot to be putting on Victor Oladipo plate, considering he continues to acknowledge that he remains in the process of rehabbing from last May’s quadriceps surgery. Plus, this is, by far, the deepest he has gotten in the playoffs in his career, so we still don’t know the degree, even if fully healthy, he is up to such challenges. I don’t view Victor as a Tyler Herro replacement. Tyler has to be close to the top of his game for the Heat to thrive in this series. Basically, with Kyle Lowry out for the start of this series, what Victor has to be is a Gabe Vincent replacement on the second unit, with Gabe moved up with the starters. If he meets just that mandate, it would be a net gain. … [Read more...] about ASK IRA: Could this be a Heat moment of truth on dual levels for Victor Oladipo?
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 ABC is bringing actress Hilary Swank and the writer of the 2015 Oscar-winning film “Spotlight” together for a new drama about a journalist working in Alaska. The Thursday series “Alaska” headlines a fall schedule announced Tuesday that also includes an hourlong celebrity version of “Jeopardy!” and leans heavily on returning favorites. Swank will play Eileen Fitzgerald, described as a “recently disgraced” reporter who leaves a high-profile New York life behind to seek personal and professional redemption up north. The creator is Tom McCarthy, who wrote the film about the Boston Globe's investigation of sexual abuse by Catholic priests. Craig Erwich, ABC entertainment president, calls it a brave show for this era. “Telling stories about journalists as heroes is something that's going to get a lot of conversation,” Erwich said in an interview Tuesday. “It's a very … [Read more...] about ABC tries something brave: drama with journalist as hero
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told CNN on Sunday that last weekend’s massacre at a Buffalo supermarket, allegedly perpetrated by an overt white supremacist , was “domestic terrorism.” Payton Gendron’s suspected manifesto appears to show that he did hope to inflict terror on the Black community . His goals were political, making “terrorism” seem to be an appropriate label for his actions. But if the two decades since 9/11 should have taught us anything, it’s that the government can and will use fears of “terrorism” to surveil, prosecute, and harass any number of people and communities—especially racial and religious minorities—no matter how specious their ties to terrorism actually are. Nevertheless, Pelosi and other Democrats continue to push the Domestic Terrorism Prevention Act (HR 350). This bill would add new offices and funding to the Department of Homeland Security, FBI, and Department of Justice. Most concerning is the enhancement in “information sharing” between the … [Read more...] about Don’t Use the Buffalo Shooting to Call for New Domestic Terrorism Laws
If you think about it, which you probably don’t really want to, your underwear does a lot; it’s the last line of defense between your most intimate bits and the outside world. Now, in what the New York Times has, rather hilariously, called “a first for underwear,” those hard-working undergarments can help keep you and your sex partners free of sexually transmitted infections. Newly FDA-cleared and vanilla-flavored, a line of stretchy, ultra-thin underwear is hoping to change the (otherwise virtually non-existent) oral sex safety game. Meant to be worn by people with vulvas during oral sex, the single-use underwear is designed to function as a wearable barrier method for protection from STIs. The product, dubbed Lorals , was first launched in 2018. As of Thursday, they are officially FDA-cleared for sexual safety. While many of us can be a bit lax about using protection , doing so during oral sex is particularly unpopular, despite the fact that STIs are still a risk. … [Read more...] about Is Flavored Underwear the Key to Safer Oral Sex?
In the tragic, whirlwind year of 2020, with racial-justice protests prompted by the killing of Black men and women by police officers, the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation raised $90 million, much of it small donations from rank-and-file supporters of its cause. A recent tax filing from the group shows that by the middle of last year, more than half of that money had been granted to local organizations or spent on consultants and real estate, leaving the foundation with $42 million in assets. The foundation’s finances have been subjected to criticism from both sides of the political spectrum. Many local groups that are part of the Black Lives Matter movement have called for more transparency and a greater role in decision making, as well as more money for the organizations led by activists on the ground. At the same time, opponents of the broader cause have tried to portray spending by one of the group’s founders as evidence of widespread mismanagement in a manner that … [Read more...] about After raising $90 million in 2020, Black Lives Matter group now has $42 million in assets.
