ALBANY – What’s it take to legalize marijuana laws in New York? Exactly 191 pages. That’s how long the provisions stretch in one of the budget bills proposed this week by Gov. Andrew M. Here are just some questions and some answers about the Cuomo plan, based largely on the specifics outlined in the 191 pages. Why does Cuomo want to legalize pot? Didn’t he just 23 months ago call marijuana a dangerous “gateway” drug at a time when some lawmakers wanted to legalize pot? Yes, he did. But he said new information came his way from a study group he appointed that Cuomo says found there were more benefits than risks to legalizing the drug. Moreover, he notes disproportionately high numbers … [Read more...] about Everything you wanted to know about legalizing pot in New York

EDEN, N.Y. - A group is holding press conferences across the state of New York, urging Gov. Andrew Cuomo to allow immigrant food and farm workers to apply for a driver's license — even if the worker is undocumented."Green Light NY: Driving Together" argues that New York's agriculture and food industry needs migrant workers because Americans are not interested in taking the jobs, and driver's licenses would reduce costs for farmers."Farmers are worried about losing their workers. And it is already happening," Jennifer Connor, an organizer for "Justice for Migrant Families," said.Green Light NY wants New York to join 12 other states that issue driver's licenses without regard to immigration status. Supporters of the idea it will help farmers, who are currently responsible for cost and logistics of transporting their migrant workers to the farm, grocery store or doctor's offices.Proponents of the plan say allowing undocumented immigrants to apply … [Read more...] about Group wants undocumented immigrants in New York to be able to apply for driver’s licenses

The U.S. Supreme Court has done its part. Now it's up to New York State to decide whether to allow wagering on sports in the state. The Supreme Court on Monday struck down a federal law that all but banned sports gambling across the country. The decision paves the way for states to give the OK to betting on the NFL, March Madness and the World Series within their borders and to tax the revenue generated by sports gambling. In New York, four new casinos – the closest one to Buffalo is in Seneca County – have the easiest path to approval under current state law. But new legislation is required for college and pro sports fans to place bets in other venues or online. "We were hoping for this. But we do know reality, and we know this is a first step," said Michael Nolan, chief operation officer of Batavia Downs Gaming, which is part of Western Regional Off Track Betting. "We're going to need some favorable New York state legislation to really give the best experience possible to … [Read more...] about With Supreme Court opening door, how soon before sports wagering comes to New York?
