Trump signs proclamation directing troops to secure border

· April 4, 2018 ·

WASHINGTON — Asserting the situation had reached “a point of crisis,” President Donald Trump on Wednesday signed a proclamation directing the deployment of the National Guard to the U.S.-Mexico border to fight illegal immigration. “The lawlessness that continues at our southern border is fundamentally incompatible with the safety, security, and sovereignty of the American people,” Trump wrote in a memo authorizing the move, adding that his administration had “no choice but to act.” The announcement came hours after Trump pledged “strong action today” on immigration and a day after he said he announced he wanted to use the military to secure the southern border until his long-promised, stalled border wall is erected. Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said she had been working with governors of the southwest border states to develop agreements on where and how many Guardsmen will be deployed. She suggested some troops could … [Read more...] about Trump signs proclamation directing troops to secure border

Prime Minister Theresa May rules out ‘standing on the border’

· March 30, 2018 ·

PRIME Minister Theresa May has effectively ruled out going anywhere near the Irish border between now and the UK's exit from Europe being triggered in exactly a year's time. She spent two hours in Northern Ireland yesterday as part of a whistle-stop tour to all four parts of the United Kingdom, when her focus was on meeting farmers to hear their views on what Brexit means to them. There are an estimated 48,000 people working on 25,000 farms in the north, yet she chose to go to the Jackson family's 132-acre Fairview dairy farm in Bangor - just about as far from the border as it's possible to get. She said Northern Ireland and the farming industry "are integral parts of the UK’s history, culture and our future – which is why I’m here today to speak to farmers, hear their views and assure them that my mission is to deliver a Brexit deal that strengthens the bonds between us and ensures our industries and nations prosper as we forge a new role for ourselves in the world." … [Read more...] about Prime Minister Theresa May rules out ‘standing on the border’

Trump says he will send troops to southern border until his promised wall is built

· April 4, 2018 ·

Presidents have used troops to help secure the border for over a century. Most recently, in 2010, Obama authorized up to 1,200 National Guard members to assist the Border Patrol, mostly in Arizona, for a year. They mostly provided surveillance, riding in Border Patrol vehicles and using binoculars, night-vision goggles and drones to spot people crossing the border, then reporting such incursions to federal agents. … [Read more...] about Trump says he will send troops to southern border until his promised wall is built
