The surprising Newsom, Pelosi and Harris ties with the Getty oil dynasty
There are few true American dynasties. The Rockefellers, Mellons, Astors and DuPonts come to mind. The Gettys, too, are on that list. Founded by oil baron J. Paul Getty who moved under the radar until his "outing" as the richest American by Fortune magazine in 1957, the subsequent four generations of his family have been in the spotlight navigating fields from environmentalism to fashion to business, music, digital archives, arts, LGBTQ rights and politics. With five wives, the patriarch of the dynasty, J. Paul Getty, fathered four sons who lived to adulthood, and the family tree has flowered to some 19 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren. Family scandals and internal squabbles such as Getty's son Gordon's (unsuccessful) seven-year court challenge over the family trust in the 1960s and the kidnapping of his eldest grandson in 1973, as well as subsequent battles with drug addiction, depression, adultery and internal squabbles over the sale of … [Read more...] about The surprising Newsom, Pelosi and Harris ties with the Getty oil dynasty
Cornyn, Senators Applaud University Demand for More Foreign Students
Texas GOP Sen. John Cornyn and various other senators said nothing in defense of young American men and women when university lobbies used a June 14 hearing to request more foreign students that will take white-collar jobs sought by young Americans. “There are over a million fewer U.S. domestic students enrolled in college than there were just three years ago … [and] compared to five years ago, international student enrollment has declined by 21 percent,” Bernard Burrola, a vice president at the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities , told a Senate hearing on June 14. The foreign students are a bonanza for the universities and their local economies, Burrola told Cornyn and Sen. Alex Padilla (D-CA), the chairman of the Senate’s subcommittee on immigration and border safety: They generate huge economic activity in our communities. International students contributed this past year over $30 billion through paying tuition rent and living expenses … Imagine where … [Read more...] about Cornyn, Senators Applaud University Demand for More Foreign Students
Mom slammed for moaning airline sat her away from kids: “Should have paid”
A mom has taken to the internet to complain after checking in for a flight and finding she was unable to sit with her young children. Posted on Mumsnet on June 15, user giraffes2021 shared the story hoping for some advice. She wrote: "So holiday booked gone to check-in and select seats and there are no seats next to each other and I've [got] a 2-year-old and a 4-year-old. What happens what do I do?" "How come you didn't get a seat choice before you made payment?" asked a commenter on the now-viral post. One reply said: "If you wanted seats together you should have paid for them and chose them when you booked the flight." "Another one too stingy to pay for seats expecting others to change for them," said one Mumsnet user. "I have booked seats and paid," wrote the commenter in the replies: "[I'm] not trying to avoid paying but by the time I checked in online there were no seats left together so I have booked what's left and spoke to the airline." "I'd pay extra not to sit … [Read more...] about Mom slammed for moaning airline sat her away from kids: “Should have paid”
WATCH: Border Video Captures Human Smuggling Incident in Arizona
Border surveillance camera operators in Arizona captured video showing a group of migrants illegally crossing the border. The migrants then pile into a vehicle and drive away. Yuma Sector Chief Patrol Agent Chris T. Clem tweeted a video showing a group of migrants who had just illegally crossed the border from Mexico into Arizona on Sunday. As the migrants approach the highway a vehicle approaches and stops alongside the roadway. Law enforcement partnerships are vital in helping us protect our borders and communities. On Sunday, #USBP agents assigned to the Yuma Station worked with the Yuma Police Department to intercept a human smuggling attempt. The driver and six migrants were arrested. pic.twitter.com/jvV48l22X9 — Chief Patrol Agent Chris T. Meet 7YO ‘Mariachi Mateo’, the world’s youngest mariachi musician
Mateo Lopez tugged at the collar of his shirt and wrenched his neck, as if to free his voice. Then, as violins slashed behind him and guitars rippled before him in a rehearsal room at the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center, he belted out La Noche y Tu , concluding with a flourish that prompted shouts of “Eso! Eso!” (Right on!) Like many mariachi musicians, Mateo treasures his Mexican heritage and loves singing songs about romance, a mother’s love, pleas for forgiveness and life and death in the countryside. But because Mateo is only seven, he also likes throwing baseballs or seeing how fast he can run from one end of a hallway to the other. The bilingual second grader has been performing since he was four years and 236 days old, a mark that earned him recognition as the world’s youngest mariachi by Guinness World Records. Mateo’s star took off after a video went viral of him singing at a Mexican restaurant in late 2018. He’s since appeared on Mexico’s version of America’s Got … [Read more...] about Meet 7YO ‘Mariachi Mateo’, the world’s youngest mariachi musician
A Simple Proposal to Revive the American Dream
During the industrial age, when high school was the gateway to the American dream, public-school systems covered the costs of earning a diploma. Today, however, as associate’s degrees have replaced high-school diplomas as the indispensable ticket into the middle class, families are forced to cover the costs of tuition and more. If the information-age economy demands a workforce with additional training, we need to begin cutting students and families the same deal: Anyone willing to work hard and earn the degree should be able to attend community college—for free. With that basic bargain in mind, a small band of mayors and governors has begun working to spark a quiet revolution in American education. We believe that associate’s degrees should be as accessible for the next 80 years as high-school diplomas have been for the past 80. So the City of Chicago has joined Oregon, Rhode Island, and Tennessee in experimenting with ways to make community college free. Three years in, we’re … [Read more...] about A Simple Proposal to Revive the American Dream

An increasing number of fathers enjoy cooking for their families
In the past, it was common to see the women of the household hunched over chopping boards or hovering over sizzling frying pans as they attended to their family’s meals every day of the week. But times are a-changing and while many women still do the lion’s share of everyday cooking, increasingly, more and more men are also stepping up to help feed their families. Drama teacher Lam Gooi Ket, 62, for example, has been cooking for his three children – Hariraam Tingyuan Lam, 31, Arunagiri Szeyuan Lam, 22, and Sangametra Yuiyuan Lam, 20, for decades. It was a practice that started when they were little and has continued to this day. “My wife is a dance teacher, choreographer and performer so she is very busy. And my three children are all adults now but when they were young, my wife and I worked very hard to look after them – we did it in shifts. These days, many fathers enjoy cooking for their families. — ANNUSHKA AHUJA/Pexels “And I always felt anxious when my children … [Read more...] about An increasing number of fathers enjoy cooking for their families
Dating Has Always Been Like Work
Love, it turns out, has always been a lot of work. While every generation will lament anew the fact that finding love is hard, history seems to indicate that this particular social ritual never gets any easier or less exciting. In Labor of Love , a new book documenting the history of dating in America, Moira Weigel, a Ph.D. candidate in comparative literature at Yale University, confirms this lament: Since dating was “invented,” it has always been an activity that required a lot of effort. As part of her research, Weigel read dating-advice books from the 1800s and hundreds of articles on dating from teen and women’s magazines over the years, and she found two common themes: First, there is usually an older part of the population that perceives dating to be “dying,” or, at least, as not being done “appropriately.” Second, Weigel found that the way people date has almost always been tied to the market forces of their era. I recently spoke with Weigel about her book, and a lightly … [Read more...] about Dating Has Always Been Like Work
