Traffic jams, boos and crowds of thousands: Robert Kennedy’s 1968 campaign in Nebraska

· April 30, 2018 ·

By planes, train and automobiles, presidential candidate Sen. Robert F. Kennedy crossed Nebraska several times in March, April and May 1968.The Democratic candidate from New York launched his Nebraska campaign at the University of Nebraska  in Lincoln with a crush of 15,000 people inside and outside the Coliseum. The tumultuous reception was reminiscent of The Beatles, wrote World-Herald political writer Larry Wilson.Among those welcoming Kennedy at the Lincoln airport were state campaign co-chairmen James Green of Omaha and Hans Jensen of Aurora. Missing was Democratic Gov. Frank Morrison, who supported President Lyndon Johnson's re-election. Mary Kay Green of Lee's Summit, Missouri, then a 26-year-old campaign volunteer, said her father was never so excited politically as working on Kennedy's campaign."He told me, 'If it kills me, I don't care. I'm using all my political acumen to help this man be our next president,'" Green said.James Green died of a heart attack in June … [Read more...] about Traffic jams, boos and crowds of thousands: Robert Kennedy’s 1968 campaign in Nebraska

Debate over sexism takes the spotlight after Serena Williams’ U.S. Open loss

· September 9, 2018 ·

As both champion Naomi Osaka and runner-up Serena Williams stood with tears streaming down their faces at the end of the women's U.S. Open final on Saturday, boos rang out from the crowd, where many felt that a chair umpire's call had marred the match. The reactions came after chair umpire Carlos Ramos gave Williams a warning for allegedly receiving coaching and later a point penalty over her smashing a racket. Williams then accused Ramos of stealing the point from her, calling him a "thief," resulting a whole game penalty for verbal abuse. … [Read more...] about Debate over sexism takes the spotlight after Serena Williams’ U.S. Open loss

Missouri Teen Spoils de Blasio’s Presidential Announcement

· May 14, 2019 ·

A politically savvy Missouri teenager spoiled New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio’s big presidential announcement — unearthing a Facebook tip about the big reveal. The progressive mayor apparently intended to make his official entry into the 2020 White House run Thursday morning on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” with an appearance alongside his wife Chirlane McCray. But Gabe Fleisher, 17 — who authors a daily political newsletter “Wake Up To Politics” — noticed de Blasio had a event planned in Sioux City, Iowa, on Friday, tweeting that the local Democratic party, in a Facebook post, billed the event as the “first stop on his Presidential announcement tour.” The de Blasio campaign scrambled to get on top of the tip, telling NBC News that de Blasio was tossing his hat into the ring. At the same time, the New York Daily News also reported the 2020 run was official. With de Blasio becoming the 23rd Democrat … [Read more...] about Missouri Teen Spoils de Blasio’s Presidential Announcement

In Lakeville, McCain tamps down hostility

· August 19, 2009 ·

Struggling to contain an emotional fire his own campaign kindled, Republican presidential nominee John McCain spent much of a town hall meeting in Lakeville on Friday trying to cool his supporters' growing hostility toward Democrat Barack Obama. Responding to repeated questions about Obama's truthfulness and personal background, McCain urged backers at a packed gym at Lakeville South High School to be "respectful" toward his opponent. McCain found himself in the odd and uncomfortable position of defending an opponent who is pulling away in many polls at the end of a week when he and running mate Sarah Palin stepped up their own attacks against Obama -- often inspiring outbursts at raucous rallies, complete with cries of "terrorist" and "off with his head." The Minnesota gathering lacked that kind of harshness, but sustained booing greeted many of McCain's attempts to discourage the crowd's fear and anger. Of the 21 questions posed to McCain during 45 minutes of give-and-take, one-third … [Read more...] about In Lakeville, McCain tamps down hostility

Jury Still Deliberating in Criminal Case Against NJ Lawyer Accused of Plotting Witness Hit

· November 18, 2011 ·

It’s going to be a long weekend for New Jersey lawyer Paul Bergrin.A federal jury in Newark has deliberated for three days without reaching a verdict in a criminal case that could put the well-known criminal defense attorney behind bars for the rest of his life, report the Record and the Star-Ledger.A skilled trial attorney, the 55-year-old Bergrin defended himself, with the help of a second-chair lawyer, in an unusual case in which he is accused of orchestrating a witness hit in order to help a client avoid conviction and prevent his own exposure as an alleged cocaine supplier to a Newark drug gang.If the former state and federal prosecutor is convicted of either aiding, abetting and inducing the murder of a witness, FBI informant Kemo Deshawn McCray, 30, who was slain in 2004, or conspiracy to murder a witness, Bergrin could be sentenced to life without parole. The two counts were originally part of 33-count Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act case against Bergrin … [Read more...] about Jury Still Deliberating in Criminal Case Against NJ Lawyer Accused of Plotting Witness Hit
