John Reynolds might have just left the most interesting job you’ve never heard of. The now-former Yosemite National Park postmaster battled record-setting floods, devastating wildfires and sometimes deadly rockslides to deliver the mail across a park that’s roughly the size of Delaware. Sure, national parks have their share of interesting and unique occupations, but none of those professionals can claim a national park is where they were born and raised, worked and retired. Reynolds can. "We were all smiles," he told SFGATE of his Jan. 31 retirement. "It’s surreal. You only retire once." The 63-year-old was born at Yosemite Medical Clinic in Yosemite Valley, back when the facility was still delivering babies in 1959. Nowadays, anyone living in or near Yosemite must "drive like hell" to Fresno when a baby is on the way, as Reynolds fondly recalled of when all three of his children were born. With credit to his mom’s job of 43 years at — you guessed it — Yosemite’s post … [Read more...] about He had one of the most unusual jobs in Yosemite. After 44 years, he’s retiring.

Prison Rate Was Rising Years Before 1994 Law
“Gangs and drugs have taken over our streets,” President Bill Clinton said in 1994 as he signed a far-reaching anti-crime bill to bipartisan acclaim. Defending the law at the time, a frightened era of crack cocaine wars and record murder rates, Hillary Clinton, as first lady, warned about an emerging generation of “super-predators” — a notion she later repudiated. Confronted last week by protesters from the Black Lives Matter movement, Mr. Clinton defended his tough crime stance, even though he, like Mrs. Clinton, has joined in recent calls for sweeping reforms in criminal sentencing. For some critics, the 1994 crime bill has come to epitomize the late-20th-century policies that sent incarceration to record levels and ravaged poor communities, taking a particularly devastating toll on African-Americans that political leaders are only now working to reverse. History and statistics tell a more complex story, according to criminologists. The Violent Crime Control and Law … [Read more...] about Prison Rate Was Rising Years Before 1994 Law

Nasa ’s Geotail mission, a collaboration with the Japanese Space Agency, Jaxa , launched in 1994 with a suite of instruments designed to study the tail of Earth’s magnetosphere -- the area of space around our planet that is influenced by Earth’s geomagnetic field. Nasa and Jaxa officials are currently deciding what to do with the spacecraft after the last of its two data recorders failed, according to a Nasa blog . The spacecraft was equipped with two data recorders, the first of which failed in 2012 after 20 years of gathering data. The remaining recorder kept functioning until June 28, and engineers were unable to get the recorder working again. Mexican Actor Pablo Lyle Gets 5 Years in Prison for Fatal Miami Road Rage Assault
MIAMI (AP) — Mexican actor Pablo Lyle was sentenced Friday to five years in prison for involuntary manslaughter after fatally punching a man during a road rage confrontation in Miami in 2019. The sentence came almost four years after Lyle was charged with murder in the death of a man he struck during a traffic incident. Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Marisa Tinkler Mendez announced the sentence two months after rejecting the actor’s request for a new trial and upholding the guilty verdict reached by a jury in October. The 36-year-old Mexican telenovela star, who appeared in the Netflix crime series “Yankee,” had faced a maximum sentence of up to 15 years in prison. The judge also ordered eight years of probation, conflict resolution management and 500 hours of community service for the actor. The actor has 30 days to appeal the sentence. Dressed in a red jail uniform, Lyle looked calm and expressed repentance during the more than three-hour hearing. He has been detained since his … [Read more...] about Mexican Actor Pablo Lyle Gets 5 Years in Prison for Fatal Miami Road Rage Assault
Boris Johnson’s 40 hospitals promise falls flat as only quarter have planning permission
Boris Johnson's promise to build 40 new hospitals is falling flat, with just a quarter having been granted planning permission. More than three years after making the commitment to build the new hospitals by 2030 - just ten have received permission to build work. The pledge was a key plank of Mr Johnson's 2019 general election manifesto. And failure to make progress would be hugely damaging for an already struggling Rishi Sunak as he prepares for an election in the next 18 months. The Liberal Democrats said details obtained through parliamentary questions and Freedom of Information requests showed the programme was behind schedule and the target was almost certain to be missed. The party said some projects had not even received outline planning permission. Lib Dem deputy leader Daisy Cooper said the failure meant communities would be left to struggle on with with crumbling facilities that were badly in need of updating. It was Boris Johnson's flagship policy ( … [Read more...] about Boris Johnson’s 40 hospitals promise falls flat as only quarter have planning permission
Rishi Sunak slammed for ‘fly posting’ as he leaves levelling up poster on old building
Gaffe-prone Rishi Sunak has been accused of “fly posting” after he slapped a levelling up poster on an historic building. The Prime Minister posed for photographs putting the slogan on the town hall in Accrington. But locals complained after it was left up for two days when he failed to take it down. The gaffe happened on the same day as his disastrous tour of the country on 19 January. During a visit to Blackpool that morning he was filmed not wearing a seatbelt in the back of a car and ended up with a fine from the police. Rishi Sunak was fined for not wearing a seatbelt on the same trip ( Image: PA) Kimberley Whitehead, a Labour councillor who made a complaint about the poster, accused the PM of “fly posting”. “It's a beautiful building. It's an iconic building right in the centre and then we had this ugly political slogan effectively defacing the front of the building,” she said. Referring to Mr Sunak’s serial rule-breaking, including not wearing a … [Read more...] about Rishi Sunak slammed for ‘fly posting’ as he leaves levelling up poster on old building

Hundreds of Miles From Home, Nurses Fight Coronavirus on New York’s Front Lines
Each night at dusk, in an otherwise desolate Times Square, hundreds of nurses in blue scrubs gather to board buses that take them to hospitals across New York City. Of the thousands of nurses who have come from other states to shore up New York’s hospitals, more than 4,000 are staying in Midtown Manhattan. During the day, many rest at their hotels, amid darkened Broadway marquees, quiet streets and boarded up shops. At night, they face crowded hospital corridors, panicked patients and strained intensive care units . And death. “I have never seen patients so sick before,’’ said Tamara Williams, a 40-year-old nurse from Dallas. “And dying, despite everything that we’re doing.” Even as the daily death toll has fallen in recent weeks, the coronavirus is still spreading. The number of new hospital admissions in New York, the hardest-hit state, has remained high, at about 1,000 a day, down from more than 3,000 a day in early April. Out-of-state nurses have … [Read more...] about Hundreds of Miles From Home, Nurses Fight Coronavirus on New York’s Front Lines

Inside the night Harry lost his virginity: Booze, fags and five minutes of furious sex
The woman who took Prince Harry 's virginity in a field behind a busy pub when he was a teenager has finally come forward to give a blow-by-blow account of the steamy encounter. Sasha Walpole spoke out after the Duke of Sussex sparked worldwide speculation about her identity when he published his memoir Spare. Ms Walpole, who was described by Harry as an "older woman" who "liked macho horses" and treated him "like a young stallion", is just two years older than the prince and says they were good friends when they were younger. She said she was never planning to share her side of the story as she kept it a secret for over 20 years, but decided to speak out and reveal her identity after Harry told the world about their sexual encounter in his book without giving her a heads-up.
