During the Sunday game in which the Philadelphia Eagles faced off against the Kansas City Chiefs, Mr Biden tweeted a video of first lady Jill Biden supporting the Eagles, while Mr Musk also showed support for the same team in a now-deleted tweet. While the US president’s tweet garnered about 29 million impressions, Mr Musk’s post got around 9 million, according to Platformer’s Zoë Schiffer and Casey Newton. Following this, the Twitter chief reportedly ordered the company’s remaining engineers to make changes to the platform to ensure his tweets got better engagement. ‘Powerful Propaganda Tool’: Bill Maher Panelists React To TikTok Ban Proposals
TikTok is a “powerful propaganda tool” that should be banned, a panelist on “Real Time With Bill Maher” said Friday night, calling the Chinese-owned app “a defense threat.” “Imagine a brain jack inserted into the neural network of two-thirds of our youth under the age of 25, who spend more time on TikTok than every other media source combined,” said Scott Galloway, a professor of marketing at New York University. “And then imagine how easy it would be to put your thumb on the scale of anti-American content and recognize that they would be stupid not to elegantly, insidiously, covertly, raise a generation of American civil, nonprofit, military, government leaders, day by day, minute by minute, who just feel a little shittier about America.” (RELATED: ‘He Won’t Protect America’: Gov. Noem Predicts Biden Won’t Sign Ban On TikTok) “If we had that tool with China, we would do the exact same thing,” Galloway continued. “This is a defense threat, it should absolutely be banned.” … [Read more...] about ‘Powerful Propaganda Tool’: Bill Maher Panelists React To TikTok Ban Proposals
Ocasio-Cortez Goes on TikTok to Argue Against Banning TikTok
It was a bruising week for TikTok on Capitol Hill, but as momentum grew among Democrats and Republicans to ban the Chinese-owned video app over national security concerns, it gained an influential ally: Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Ms. Ocasio-Cortez, a Democrat of New York who is known for her own large social media following, waded into the debate just before midnight on Friday by posting a video on — what else? — TikTok. The video , her first on the platform, had garnered 1.5 million views by early Saturday morning. In it, Ms. Ocasio-Cortez argues that President Biden and colleagues in both parties were “putting the cart before the horse” and rushing prematurely to cut off more than 150 million American users from the popular platform. She does not directly address their concerns that the Chinese authorities could exploit the app to monitor Americans or spread misinformation. “If we want to make a decision as significant as banning TikTok, and we believe — or … [Read more...] about Ocasio-Cortez Goes on TikTok to Argue Against Banning TikTok
Leaked Speech Excerpts Show a Hillary Clinton at Ease With Wall Street
In lucrative paid speeches that Hillary Clinton delivered to elite financial firms but refused to disclose to the public, she displayed an easy comfort with titans of business, embraced unfettered international trade and praised a budget-balancing plan that would have required cuts to Social Security, according to documents posted online Friday by WikiLeaks. The tone and language of the excerpts clash with the fiery liberal approach she used later in her bitter primary battle with Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont and could have undermined her candidacy had they become public. Mrs. Clinton comes across less as a firebrand than as a technocrat at home with her powerful audience, willing to be critical of large financial institutions but more inclined to view them as partners in restoring the country’s economic health. In the excerpts from her paid speeches to financial institutions and corporate audiences, Mrs. Clinton said she dreamed of “open trade and open borders” throughout … [Read more...] about Leaked Speech Excerpts Show a Hillary Clinton at Ease With Wall Street
EV Fail: Rivian Electric Truck Owner’s ‘Honeymoon Phase’ Ends When It Gets Stuck in Snow
The owner of a Rivian R1S electric SUV was overjoyed to have his dream electric vehicle after waiting for years. But after owning the car for just days, it got stuck in the snow and immobilized by a safety feature, leading to a $2,100 bill to transport it to a repair facility. Business Insider reports that a recent incident involving an owner of a Rivian R1S has forced the maker of the electric vehicles to examine its customer service more carefully and think about making changes to improve the user experience. The owner of an R1S truck, Chase Merrill, encountered a difficult situation when his electric SUV got stuck in deep snow and a safety feature rendered it immobile. Ratcliffe: Iran Is Attacking Us Because China Has Their Back
On Friday’s broadcast of the Fox News Channel’s “Hannity,” former DNI Director John Ratcliffe stated that Iran’s attacks on Americans in the Middle East are a declaration from Iran that China — “the same China that flew a spy balloon” across the U.S. — has their back. Ratcliffe said, [relevant remarks begin around 2:10] “I appreciate the fact that the Biden administration responded to the Iranian attacks. At least this time, unlike Afghanistan, where the response was to accidentally kill a van full of ten Afghan kids, this time, they at least hit their target. But they didn’t send the response that Secretary Austin believed that they would, because, as you pointed out, Pete, within hours, Iran fired off seven more rockets and [caused] more injuries to U.S. forces. Compare the same situation three years ago, when a U.S. contractor was killed, a proportionate response, sending the right message, was we decided to take out the head of the Iranian terror network, the Iranian Quds Force … [Read more...] about Ratcliffe: Iran Is Attacking Us Because China Has Their Back
Brooks: TikTok Part of the ‘Battlefield’ in ‘Cold War’ with China
On Friday’s “PBS NewsHour,” New York Times columnist David Brooks stated that “We’re in the middle of a cold war with China” and technology like TikTok is “the battlefield” in this cold war. Brooks said, “We’re in the middle of a cold war with China. It’s started. And this has happened over two administrations, but especially with the Biden administration. It’s now official U.S. policy — and I support it, I’m just saying how stark and dramatic we should take it — official U.S. policy to ban…the chips and the technology used to make the chips that could go into a phone, a car, a toaster, or a missile, or a drone, or A.I. technology. So, we are now really trying to crack down on, not the Chinese military, but the Chinese economy, because there’s really no difference between these two things. So that is just a very stark thing. So, if you’re wondering, were we in a cold war? Well, we were against the Soviets. We’re now behaving like we are against China. And I think we are with the … [Read more...] about Brooks: TikTok Part of the ‘Battlefield’ in ‘Cold War’ with China
Capehart: We’re in a Cold War with China, They’re Making Deals in Middle East We ‘Used to Seek’
On Friday’s “PBS NewsHour,” Washington Post Associate Editor and MSNBC host Jonathan Capehart said that the United States and China are in the middle of a cold war and pointed to the “huge” deal that restored diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran that was brokered by China as an example of China’s diplomatic push. Capehart also remarked that the United States “used to seek deals like that. Now it’s the Chinese.” After New York Times columnist David Brooks stated that the U.S. and China are in a cold war and official U.S. policy is that we’re in a cold war with China, co-host Amna Nawaz asked, “Do you see it the same way? We’re in a cold war with China now?” Capehart answered, “Well, when David puts it like that, yes. How could I argue?” He continued, “Also because of what we’ve seen with what China has done on the diplomatic front in the last few weeks. The deal that China brokered between I think it was Saudi Arabia and Iran, huge deal. I remember — I’m old … [Read more...] about Capehart: We’re in a Cold War with China, They’re Making Deals in Middle East We ‘Used to Seek’
Big Brother: Govt to Use Drones to Monitor Property Zoning Compliance
Drones will be deployed in a Dutch municipality to monitor whether people’s homes meet zoning regulations, monitor construction sites, and protected wildlife areas. The Dutch municipality of Deventer has been accused of wanting to usher in an Orwellian society after it revealed plans to use drones to monitor compliance with local laws such as zoning regulations or even wildlife protection. Mayor Ron König defended the plan, saying : “We don’t make videos and no one who comes into the picture is recognisable,” claiming that drones would be used in limited instances such as monitoring the construction of buildings. “That’s very useful in the city because you have big buildings there. If you want to supervise in the normal way, you sometimes have to build risers or rent aerial work platforms. It’s much more convenient and efficient to deploy drones.” König said that drones could also be deployed to watch over protected nature areas, explaining: “Deventer has a large outdoor … [Read more...] about Big Brother: Govt to Use Drones to Monitor Property Zoning Compliance
