The manufacturer of Ashley Hernandez’s preferred baby formula for her two girls said it was out of stock on its website. Listings on eBay showed it would cost her up to $120 for a single can. So when she found a seller online offering 10 cans for $40 each, she expressed her desperation. “I have two children,” Ms. Hernandez, 35, of Dallas, began her message. “I cannot find it. I can purchase this today. I can pay cash.” Parents across the country are struggling to keep up with a nationwide shortage of baby formula — a problem worsened by a recent recall by Abbott Nutrition , a manufacturer of baby food. The recall came after at least four babies were hospitalized with bacterial infections and two died after consuming its products, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said. “We know that our recent recall caused additional stress and anxiety in an already challenging situation of a global supply shortage,” Abbott said in a statement last month. “We are working hard to help … [Read more...] about ‘Please Help’: A Nationwide Baby Formula Shortage Worsens

Amid a Worsening Formula Shortage, Mothers Are Asked: ‘Why Not Breastfeed?’
Before having her third child last month, Joelyz Lugo had planned to breastfeed, but her daughter’s difficult birth derailed such plans. While in the neonatal intensive care unit, her baby needed to be fed formula, and when the pair finally tried breastfeeding, the baby struggled to latch. One month later, with a baby formula shortage making it all but impossible for Ms. Lugo to give up breastfeeding, she has settled into a grueling routine. Every three hours, she hooks herself up to a breast pump to try and boost production, but her milk supply remains low. Ms. Lugo gets less than an ounce of breast milk per pumping session — a fraction of what her daughter needs. Between breastfeeding and pumping and searching stores around her home in New Britain, Conn., in search of formula, she spends hours every day simply trying to ensure her baby has enough to eat. “I have been crying about it because I’m trying my best, and nothing is working,” said Ms. Lugo, 31, who in two weeks is … [Read more...] about Amid a Worsening Formula Shortage, Mothers Are Asked: ‘Why Not Breastfeed?’
Greek pilot found guilty of murdering Brit wife Caroline Crouch and hanging pet dog
A Greek pilot has been found guilty of murdering his Brit wife and hanging their pet dog from the bannister. Babis Anagnostopoulos, the Greek helicopter pilot who admitted suffocating 20-year-old Caroline Crouch as she lay asleep in the couple’s Athens maisonette, should be found guilty on all counts. The 34-year-old helicopter pilot faced four counts: premeditated murder, animal abuse, perverting the course of justice and lying to authorities. He has now been found guilty of all counts at the end of a five-week trial that has gripped Greece. In a marathon 10-hour testimony last week the pilot told judges he killed his wife “in the heat of the moment” in the early hours of May 11 2021. The Athens court meted out the toughest punishment it could for Anagnostopoulos. In addition to life in prison he was handed an extra eleven years and six months in prison for the brutal murder of the couples pet husky Roxy and deliberately perverting the course of justice. The pilot … [Read more...] about Greek pilot found guilty of murdering Brit wife Caroline Crouch and hanging pet dog
Murdered Caroline Crouch’s puppy ‘cried’ as twisted pilot hanged it to stage break-in
The Greek pilot who murdered his Brit wife said her puppy cried as he hung it from the bannister to make his alibi about a home invasion more credible. Babis Anagnostopoulos, 34, was found guilty today of the premeditated murder of the 20-year-old mother of his child and the unlawful slaughter of her rescue pooch Roxy. Anagnostopoulos was handed life in prison for Caroline's death - with an extra 11-and-a-half years added on for murdering her puppy thanks to a new law rolled out in Greece last year. Earlier in the trial he described how Roxy "cried for a few seconds" as he hung her body from the bannister of their ground floor flat. The cruel abuse happened downstairs from where his wife was laying dead beside their 11-month-old daughter - who was thankfully unharmed. Caroline Crouch’s dad breaks silence after her husband was convicted of murder
The heartbroken family of murdered Brit Caroline Crouch say they are glad her killer husband has been sent to one of Europe's worst jails. Pilot Babis Anagnostopoulos admitted killing Caroline, 20, as she lay asleep in front of their baby daughter and killing his wife's puppy to make it look like there had been a break-in. He denied murder but was found guilty. The 34-year-old will become a "broken man" in the notorious prison where he will serve his life sentence and will never see his daughter again, Caroline's dad said. Anagnostopoulos, branded an "odious creature" by her family, was jailed for premeditated murder, animal abuse, perverting the course of justice and lying to authorities at a court in Athens. He will serve around 18 years behind bars at the maximum security Korydallos jail, home to some of the most violent criminals in the country. “I hired a psychiatrist for my dog”
When my husband and I reunited after our divorce and decided to move in together in Toronto with our daughter, I knew I wanted to own a house. So, we bought a cottage by the water and I realized I needed a dog in my life. I wanted a swim partner as well as a best friend and after careful research, we decided to get a Portuguese water dog. We drove to Delaware to see a breeder who was highly recommended, and as we got out of the car, we saw more than 50 dogs and puppies in a fenced-in area nearby. As most dog owners know, you don't pick a puppy, the puppy picks you. This little six-week-old black and white fur ball jumped in my lap a minute after we entered the yard. He was our new baby. We drove him home to Toronto and during the eight or so hour drive he was a perfect little passenger. We named him Barco. Barco means boat in Portuguese, so it was a perfect name for our new Portuguese water dog. Barco became my pet and swim partner. He was a strong swimmer who would swim ahead of … [Read more...] about “I hired a psychiatrist for my dog”

Is Putin dead? Pay attention when Russia starts broadcasting “Swan Lake”
Vladimir Putin's enemies are keeping a close eye on a bird in pointe shoes, because a broadcast of "Swan Lake" may reveal his demise. The ballet—a more-than-century-old staple of our own highbrow culture—is one of Russia's most famous contributions to the arts. It is a work that contains all the pathos and depth of the modern Russian nation, a dark story with a tragic ending. (Or a happy one, if one delves deeper in the ballet's evolution.) It's also a secret key to the state of things in the Kremlin. Swan Lake has all the elements of a modern-day binge-able series: young, scantily dressed women, a winged sorcerer, an evil stepmother, a handsome prince, a double suicide. On March 3rd, Swan Lake played a role in the Ukraine war, when State authorities in Moscow shut down Russia's youth-focused, independent and often Kremlin-critical TV Rain. The staff walked off the set and asserted their power to have the last word through Tchaikovsky's dramatic music and the disciplined dancing of … [Read more...] about Is Putin dead? Australian who ‘wasn’t sure where he was’ lucky to be alive after bite from highly venomous snake hiding in his car
An Australian man was rushed to hospital last week after being bitten by a deadly snake that slithered into his car while he went for a swim. The incident occurred at Back Creek Park in Millmerran, a town in the Toowoomba Region of Queensland, after the victim left his car's door open and was attacked after returning to the vehicle, 7News reported . The man, 54, has not been named by law enforcement. After being bitten, the victim attempted to contact the local emergency services but "wasn't too sure where he was," Sergeant Steven Ryan told 7News. The man, who was with his pet dog at the time, made a makeshift tourniquet but was only saved after another driver spotted his vehicle's hazard lights had been switched on. The victim was found lying by the roadside and then airlifted to Millmerran Hospital. He was administered anti-venom and is expected to survive. The snake responsible for the unexpected bite is believed to have been an eastern brown or a death adder, officials … [Read more...] about Australian who ‘wasn’t sure where he was’ lucky to be alive after bite from highly venomous snake hiding in his car
