Protests and celebrations as Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade: Live updates

June 25, 2022 by www.nbcnews.com

Protests continued in cities across the country Saturday after the Supreme Court's decision to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling that had guaranteed the right to abortion in the United States. As states began to enact abortion bans and clinics stopped offering the procedure, large crowds gathered in cities such as New York, Los Angeles and Atlanta, some jubilant, others dismayed at the decision that stripped away women’s constitutional right to abortion. Both sides predicted the fight over abortion would continue. Key highlights: President Joe Biden called it a “sad day” for the U.S. and said it would be up to voters in November to select candidates who would protect a host of rights — not just abortion but also marriage equality and the right to contraception. Centrist Sens. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and Susan Collins, R-Maine, suggested they were misled by Justices Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch, two key votes in the decision to overturn Roe. ‘We’ve got to go to work’ — Mario Cristobal welcomes alumni, high school recruits to Hurricanes’ Legends Camp

June 25, 2022 by www.denverpost.com

There weren’t any flashy cars or sets for elaborate photo shoots laid out for recruits at Miami’s Legends Camp on Saturday morning. Hurricanes coach Mario Cristobal told the hundreds of high school players, coaches and family members on UM’s campus that they were there to work. The returning Miami alumni, with numerous Super Bowl rings and Pro Bowl selections on their resumes, brought the flash. “It’s not time for paradise yet,” said Cristobal, referring to the previous name of the team’s flagship summer camp. “We’ve got to go to work.” “Work” was the theme of the camp, as former Hurricanes and Dallas Cowboys star Michael Irvin followed Cristobal’s opening speech with a similar message. “Who’s going to make a commitment to one day be coming back here with a black shirt that says, ‘Legends’?” Irvin said, referring to the shirts Miami alumni were wearing. The camp was part of a busy weekend for Cristobal and UM’s coaching staff. In addition to the camp, the Hurricanes … [Read more...] about ‘We’ve got to go to work’ — Mario Cristobal welcomes alumni, high school recruits to Hurricanes’ Legends Camp

‘Elvis’ Fact or Fiction: Colonel Tom Parker Biographer on What’s Real and Not in Baz Luhrmann Biopic

June 25, 2022 by www.sfgate.com

Click here to read the full article. Does the phrase “That’s All Right, Mama” apply to the new “ Elvis ” movie… as in, “that’s all correct, ma’am”? No one is probably expecting that ; any practiced watcher of biopics knows virtually any example will take deep liberties with the facts for dramatic purposes. And maybe it’s a given that a director who puts hip-hop and hard rock on his period-film soundtracks, as Baz Luhrmann does, might favor effect over total verisimilitude. Still, “Elvis” is right on enough counts — literally or spiritually — that it’s worth trying to separate fact from fiction in the movie’s narrative of Elvis Presley (played by Austin Butler) and his nearly career-long manager, Colonel Tom Parker (Tom Hanks). There may be no one better to go to who can provide the truth on both Presley and “the Colonel,” in tandem, than the latter’s biographer, Alanna Nash. Nash, a veteran music journalist, published “The Colonel: The Extraordinary Story of Colonel … [Read more...] about ‘Elvis’ Fact or Fiction: Colonel Tom Parker Biographer on What’s Real and Not in Baz Luhrmann Biopic

Pictures: 18 Dead as 2,000 African Migrants Storm Spanish Enclave

June 25, 2022 by www.breitbart.com

(AFP) — The Spanish prime minister on Saturday described a deadly migrant rush on the enclave of Melilla from Morocco as an attack on Spain’s “territorial integrity”, as human rights activists demanded an investigation. At least 18 African migrants died in the latest drama on the doors of the European Union, when around 2,000 mostly sub-Saharan African migrants approached the Moroccan border with the tiny territory at dawn on Friday. More than 500 managed to enter a border control area after cutting a fence with shears, Melilla authorities said in a statement. Moroccan officials said late Friday that 13 migrants had died of injuries sustained in the incursion, in addition to five confirmed dead earlier in the day. “Some fell from the top of the barrier” separating the two sides, a Moroccan official said. March 30, 2022 by www.independent.co.uk

Jamie Lee Curtis has spoken candidly about the beauty of ageing and how she wants the word “anti-ageing” to be eliminated entirely. Curtis discussed how she feels about getting older with Maria Shriver for the Radically Reframing Ageing Summit , presented by Sounds True and Shriver Media, earlier this month. The actor revealed that she supports “ageing” and “natural beauty,” and hopes that the term “anti-ageing” could cease to exist. “I am an advocate now for natural beauty because I do feel that there has been a genocide on natural beauty,” she explained. “This word ‘anti-ageing’ has to be struck, because what the f*** is ‘anti-ageing?’” “I am pro-ageing,” she added. “I want to age with intelligence and grace and dignity and verve and energy. I don’t want to hide from it.” Recommended Jamie Lee Curtis expresses support for Ukraine refugees on Oscars red carpet and pays tribute to Betty White Jamie Lee Curtis says she’s ‘never felt … [Read more...] about Jamie Lee Curtis says she wants to get rid of term ‘anti-ageing’: ‘I want to age with intelligence’

Supreme Court abortion ruling touches off second day of raucous protests nationwide

June 25, 2022 by www.nbcnews.com

WASHINGTON - There appeared to be no let-up Saturday as Americans angered by the Supreme Court's overturning of Roe v. Wade hit the streets for a second day of mass protests. From Washington, D.C., where the conservatives on the court Friday swept aside a half-century of precedent to do away with the law, all the way to the West Coast, there were angry, raucous protests against a ruling that almost immediately made access to abortions all-but-impossible in half the country. Those protests were, at times, met with counter-protests by anti-abortion activists elated by the ruling and determined to stop abortions from happening everywhere in the country. Outside the Supreme Court building, a small-but-growing group of protesters chanting "Women's rights are human rights" confronted a preacher who had waded into the mix and appeared to be trying to drown them out. "Listen to me, our religious convictions inform everything we do," the Rev. Jonathan Tremaine Thomas said. … [Read more...] about Supreme Court abortion ruling touches off second day of raucous protests nationwide
