One candidate wants to make the Los Angeles Police Department larger than it has ever been. Another envisions a future where America’s second largest city no longer needs police. The others have staked out middle ground. After the tumult of recent years, it should come as no surprise that the race to become Los Angeles’ next mayor has focused largely on issues surrounding crime, public safety and policing. Mass protests after the 2020 murder of George Floyd ignited fierce, ongoing debate about the role LAPD should play in the city and turned renewed scrutiny on long-running concerns about officers’ sometimes heavy-handed tactics. The city, meanwhile, had one of its deadliest years in the past two decades and helped elect a controversial reformer to serve as the county’s top prosecutor. But the candidates for mayor differ on the correct path forward, mirroring a nationwide struggle over how to balance the need to combat rising crime with calls to rethink a status quo in … [Read more...] about From more cops to defund: Candidates for L.A. mayor differ on crime and policing

Trump “committed treason” with Pence remark: Ex-prosecutor Glenn Kirschner
Former Army prosecutor Glenn Kirschner on Thursday said he believes Donald Trump "committed the crime of treason" if a report is true that he said former Vice President Mike Pence should be hanged. Kirschner made the comments on his YouTube show, Justice Matters . In the video, he discussed a recently released account provided to the House select committee investigating the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021. According to The New York Times ' reporting of the account, Mark Meadows , then the White House chief of staff, told colleagues on January 6 that Trump said "something to the effect of: M aybe Mr. Pence should be hanged." "The evidence is mounting that Donald Trump didn't just incite the insurrection. He committed the crime of treason," Kirschner said. Rajasthan Minister Unhappy with CM’s Principal Secretary, Asks to Be ‘Relieved’ of Ministerial Post
Rajasthan Sports Minister Ashok Chandna Thursday expressed anguish over the conduct of Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot’s principal secretary, referring to him as the “minister of all the departments”, and said he would prefer being removed as a minister. Chandna made his displeasure public through a tweet, saying he does not want to hold on to the “dishonourable” ministerial post. “I request the honourable chief minister to relieve me of this dishonourable ministerial post and give the charge of all my departments to Shri Kuldeep Ranka ji. He is anyway the minister of all the departments,” he tweeted in Hindi, without elaborating. Ranka is the principal secretary to the chief minister. The development comes just days ahead of Rajya Sabha elections in Rajasthan and indicates resentment within the party. Just a week ago, Congress MLA from Dungarpur Ganesh Ghogra sent his resignation to Gehlot in protest against a police case against him. BJP leaders latched onto Chandna’s tweet to … [Read more...] about Rajasthan Minister Unhappy with CM’s Principal Secretary, Asks to Be ‘Relieved’ of Ministerial Post
Donald Trump Announces 2016 Presidential Bid
Updated | Real estate mogul Donald Trump announced his intent to run for president in the 2016 election on Tuesday morning at a self-named skyscraper in New York City. The 69-year-old reality TV star has flirted with a presidential bid on multiple occasions in the past several decades, before ultimately changing his mind. This election cycle looks different, though. He recently began hiring staff in early voting states, and in March he publicly announced he would form a presidential exploratory committee, which is typically the first step for candidates who want to raise money without the constraints of officially being in the race. The businessman and Celebrity Apprentice host has visited early voting states, including Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina. He has been a member of both the Democratic and Republican parties, as well as declared himself an independent. But he endorsed former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney for president in the 2012 election against … [Read more...] about Donald Trump Announces 2016 Presidential Bid
Trump in 2012 on Newtown shootings: “Obama spoke for me and every American”
President Barack Obama spoke at a vigil on December 16, 2012, in Newtown, Connecticut, two days after the fatal shooting of 20 first-graders and six educators in the town's Sandy Hook Elementary School. "We can't tolerate this anymore," he said. "These tragedies must end. And to end them, we must change. We will be told that the causes of such violence are complex, and that is true. No single law—no set of laws—can eliminate evil from the world, or prevent every senseless act of violence in our society. But that can't be an excuse for inaction. Surely, we can do better than this." The massacre prompted Obama and the victims' families to launch a huge political campaign for stronger gun laws, which abruptly ended four months later when the Senate failed to pass a comprehensive background-checks bill. In response to Obama's speech three and a half years ago, Donald Trump—who then was simply a private citizen, not running for the highest office in the land— tweeted in support of … [Read more...] about Trump in 2012 on Newtown shootings: “Obama spoke for me and every American”
Oil climbs on tight supply, prospect of EU ban on Russian supply
Oil prices rose on Thursday, extending a cautious rally this week on signs of tight supply while the European Union (EU) wrangles with Hungary over plans to ban imports from Russia, the world's second-largest crude exporter, after it invaded Ukraine. Brent crude futures gained 87 cents, or 0.8%, to $114.90 a barrel at 1001 GMT. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures climbed $1.02, or 0.9%, to $111.35 a barrel. A bigger-than-expected drawdown in U.S. crude inventories in the week to May 20, following soaring exports, buoyed the market on Wednesday. U.S. refiners picked up the pace of activity, boosting overall capacity use to the highest levels since before the pandemic. "The fundamental backdrop ... is getting price supportive as the driving season is approaching and will turn even more bullish once the EU sanctions on Russian oil sales are endorsed by all parties involved," PVM Oil's Tamas Varga said. European Council President Charles Michel on Wednesday said he was … [Read more...] about Oil climbs on tight supply, prospect of EU ban on Russian supply

Ecclestone, 91, was intending to fly to Switzerland on the private jet. Donald Trump and the Rise of Plutocracy
Of the things Donald Trump has said since he began hinting at a presidential candidacy, the one that most requires challenging is his assertion that people keep asking him to run. Journalists are vigilant defenders of truth when the subject is President Obama's birthplace or OPEC prices. They are credulous when it comes to explaining populist movements. They assume the impetus always comes from the demand side. People are "fed up"! There is an "anti-incumbent sentiment" in the air! Such demand-side sentiments can explain a lot—but not why certain members of the public might wish to be governed by a billionaire yahoo. For that, it is just as important to look at the supply side. Trump's candidacy comes from a sociological fact—the steady rise of plutocracy over the last quarter century—as well as a public sentiment. The truth is not universally enough acknowledged that a man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of political influence. Diversifying one's portfolio to include … [Read more...] about Donald Trump and the Rise of Plutocracy
Anti-gun protesters stage “die-in” outside of Trump Tower
A group of protesters gathered peacefully Wednesday in front of one of Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump's New York City skyscrapers to protest his comment from January that he "could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody" without losing support from voters. About 40 people from the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence and other gun-control advocates gathered outside of the candidate's headquarters for the so called die-in demonstration. On the stretch in front of the building, they briefly laid down and covered themselves in white sheets to represent the 90 Americas who are killed by gun violence each day. Then they stood up and repeatedly chanted, "Ninety a day, no more, no way!" Some held signs that read, "Hey Trump, gun violence is not a joke," "Not one more [gun death]" and "Love Trumps hate." The entire event lasted just 10 minutes, but the participants said they hope Trump hears their message. "We don't think talking about killing people … [Read more...] about Anti-gun protesters stage “die-in” outside of Trump Tower
