On Friday, A bench of Justices H. C. Mishra and B. B. Mangalmurti was hearing the bail applications of the appellants, having been convicted for the offences under Sections 147, 148, 427 / 149, 435 / 149, and 302 / 149 of the IPC. In his letter, Mr. Upadhyay highlights the ever mounting backlog of cases that currently plagues the judiciary, pointing out that currently, more than three crore cases are pending in the country. He attributes this situation to three factors: (i) Lack of judicial infrastructure i.e. lack of district courts, staff etc., (ii) archaic laws, and (iii) incompetent, inexperienced and unaccountable Public Prosecutors, Standing Councils and Government Advocates. Khanwilkar and Navin Sinha, on Tuesday, directed that no coercive action may be initiated against him in connection with the FIR registered under sections 504, 505(1)(c) and 509 of the IPC and section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Women Harassment Act for allegedly sharing a derogatory Facebook post on women journalists.
