Report: Turkey Claims Audio and Video Prove Saudis Murdered Khashoggi

· October 12, 2018 ·

The Washington Post published a story Thursday claiming Turkish officials told the U.S. they have audio and video recordings from inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul proving Saudi agents murdered missing journalist Jamal Khashoggi. The Turks have apparently have not shared the evidence with anyone yet. The Washington Post cites Turkish officials who claim “the audio recording, in particular, provides some of the most persuasive and gruesome evidence that the Saudi team is responsible for Khashoggi’s death.”“The voice recording from inside the embassy lays out what happened to Jamal after he entered. You can hear his voice and the voices of men speaking Arabic. You can hear how he was interrogated, tortured and then murdered,” said one anonymous official. Another said the sounds of Khashoggi being beaten were captured on the recording. The Post article offers no such details of what the video evidence purportedly contains. It might be a reference to … [Read more...] about Report: Turkey Claims Audio and Video Prove Saudis Murdered Khashoggi

Navy SEAL Trial Exposes Divide in Normally Secretive Force

· June 30, 2019 ·

It was called the “The Sewing Circle,” an unlikely name for a secret subsect of Navy SEALs. Its purpose was even more improbable: A chat forum to discuss alleged war crimes they said their chief, a decorated sniper and medic, committed on a recent tour of duty in Iraq. The WhatsApp group would eventually lead to formal allegations that Special Operations Chief Edward Gallagher fatally stabbed a wounded Islamic State captive in his care and shot civilians in Iraq in 2017. Gallagher, 40, has pleaded not guilty to the charges. A jury of mostly combat Marines will ultimately decide the fate of the 19-year-veteran and Bronze Star recipient charged with murder, attempted murder and conduct prejudicial to good order and discipline for posing with the corpse for photographs. No matter the outcome, the court-martial at Naval Base San Diego has provided a rare view into the insular Navy SEAL community and likely will have a long-term impact on one of the military’s most … [Read more...] about Navy SEAL Trial Exposes Divide in Normally Secretive Force

Africa Update OCTOBER 22, 2015

· October 23, 2015 ·

Libya On October 17th, members of the United Nations (U.N.) Security Council urged all Libyan parties to endorse and sign the recently finalized political agreement for the creation of a Government of National Accord. The Security Council reiterated the agreement offers a real prospect for resolving Libya’s political, security, and institutional challenges. It also noted the Libya Sanctions Committee is prepared to designate those who threaten Libya’s peace, stability, and security or who undermine the successful completion of its political transition. On October 19th, the Foreign Ministers of Algeria, France, Germany, Morocco, Qatar, Spain, Tunisia, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the United Kingdom (U.S) and the United States (U.S.), as well as the European Union (EU) High Representative for Foreign Affairs, called on all parties to the Libyan Political Dialogue to immediately approve the political agreement brokered by U.N. Special Representative for Libya … [Read more...] about Africa Update OCTOBER 22, 2015

Exclusive: U.N. may push back Libya election conference

· January 31, 2019 ·

By Ulf Laessing and Ayman al-Warfalli TUNIS/BENGHAZI, Libya (Reuters) - The United Nations is likely to delay a conference intended to prepare Libya for elections this year until there is more support from rival leaders, sources familiar with the plans said. The national meeting is central to a U.N. and Western roadmap for a vote in Libya as a way out of its eight-year war since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi. But big players and their allied armed groups wield considerable power under the status quo, and there is mistrust between rival governments and parliaments. Libya splintered following the NATO-backed revolt against Gaddafi and has since 2014 been divided between competing political and armed groups based in Tripoli and the east. More delay in the U.N.-sponsored conference, where Libyans from all walks of society are supposed to decide details of their elections such as the presidential or parliamentary system, would also probably push back an actual vote. Under a French plan, … [Read more...] about Exclusive: U.N. may push back Libya election conference
