I’m standing in my tiny kitchen with blue slime all over my hands watching Paris Hilton strut around on screen in her much larger kitchen. She’s wearing couture — an extravagant pink dress with a huge bow on the bum — and I’m wearing Madewell, but we’re both in the same predicament. “My sliv gloves!” she moans, trying in vain to scrub neon-colored marshmallow off her pink lacy fingerless gloves (“sliv” is short for “sliving,” Hilton’s newest catchphrase that is a combination of “slaying” and “living your best life”). This is “Cooking with Paris,” the celebrity heiress’s latest endeavor: a Netflix cooking show built on the premise that she’s absolutely no culinary wizard, but hey, she wants to learn. On the show, Hilton invites friends like Kim Kardashian and Demi Lovato over to her house to make a meal while dressed to the nines. In each episode, three things are guaranteed: Hilton will wear an impractical outfit, she will say “sliving” too many times and she will be … [Read more...] about ‘Eggy disappointment’: I made the recipes from Paris Hilton’s Netflix show ‘Cooking with Paris’

Easy-to-swallow recipes for those for those with mouth pain
Let’s say that you are very ill, so much so that your nourishment gets into your body via a painful puncture or means — a needle and solution, for example, or a feeding tube. You bear the pain because you tell yourself that you must, in order to eat, surely, but also just to move on. Let’s say, however, that the way food routinely gets into you is itself riven with pain. It is your mouth, its palate, the chewing and swallowing devices of your mandible and tongue, the whole hole. You’ve had some wisdom teeth removed, say. Or a couple of serious canker sores have encamped. Your advanced Parkinson’s complications make it near-impossible to swallow. Your mouth suffers an abscess, or lesions from shingles, or oral thrush. Or, let’s say that a surgeon had to remove some of the mouth because cancer was there (as in a portion of your tongue). “Three months into the pandemic,” says a friend, Marty Jones, “I had lost a lot of weight — 25 pounds — and I didn’t know why.” With … [Read more...] about Easy-to-swallow recipes for those for those with mouth pain
The summer of NIMBY in the Bay Area’s poshest town
SAN FRANCISCO — Tech industry titans have navigated a lot to get where they are today — the dot-com bust, the 2008 recession, a backlash against tech power, the pandemic. They have overcome boardroom showdowns, investor power struggles and regulatory land mines. But this summer, some of them encountered their most threatening opponent yet: multifamily townhouses. Their battle took place in one of Silicon Valley’s most exclusive and wealthiest towns: Atherton, California, a 4.9-square-mile enclave with a population of 7,500, just north of Stanford University. There, tech chief executives and venture capitalists banded together over the specter that more than one home could exist on a single acre of land in the general vicinity of their estates. Their weapon? Strongly worded letters. Faced with the possibility of new construction, Rachel Whetstone, Netflix’s chief communications officer and an Atherton resident, wrote to the City Council and mayor that she was “very … [Read more...] about The summer of NIMBY in the Bay Area’s poshest town
Wall Street opens lower as retail sales numbers disappoint
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 12 NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are opening lower on Wall Street Wednesday as traders absorb some discouraging news about how much Americans are spending. Major indexes were all lower in the first few minutes of trading after the government reported that sales at U.S. retailers were flat last month, even though forecasters were expecting an increase. Many households are spending more cautiously as inflation remains high and as interest rates rise. The S&P 500 was off 0.6%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average and the Nadsaq composite also fell. The yield on the 10-year Treasury rose to 2.88%. European markets were also lower. THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. AP’s earlier story follows below. NEW YORK (AP) — Wall Street pointed toward declines before the market opened Wednesday after Target reported a huge decline in profits on the same day … [Read more...] about Wall Street opens lower as retail sales numbers disappoint
Frank Ocean’s Powerful Response to Orlando and Homophobia
I keep reading the reactions on Tumblr to Frank Ocean’s new post responding to the Orlando shooting. Here’s what the singer wrote, in full: I read in the paper that my brothers are being thrown from rooftops blindfolded with their hands tied behind their backs for violating sharia law. I heard the crowds stone these fallen men if they move after they hit the ground. I heard it’s in the name of God. I heard my pastor speak for God too, quoting scripture from his book. Words like abomination popped off my skin like hot grease as he went on to describe a lake of fire that God wanted me in. I heard on the news that the aftermath of a hate crime left piles of bodies on a dance floor this month. I heard the gunman feigned dead among all the people he killed. I heard the news say he was one of us. I was six years old when I heard my dad call our transgender waitress a faggot as he dragged me out a neighborhood diner saying we wouldn’t be served because she was dirty. That was the last … [Read more...] about Frank Ocean’s Powerful Response to Orlando and Homophobia
New Hulu documentary reveals dark discoveries about Victoria’s Secret
Sign up for our Remote Control newsletter to receive the best of streaming in your inbox every week. For decades, mallgoers, slightly confused teenage girls and horny teenage boys have wondered what secret this mysterious Victoria is hiding. The new three-part Hulu docuseries “Victoria’s Secret: Angels and Demons” explores these secrets and, well, they are less “she only wears thongs (wink)” and more “wait, was this brand just a lot of pink thongs covering up the very real exploitation of underage girls?” The media has long covered the shift in our awareness of the retouching and beyond-unreal expectations of women’s bodies, but what was going on behind the scenes at Victoria’s Secret has somehow remained mostly under wraps. You will be stunned to know that a brand built under the guise of female empowerment was created by very powerful men, who hired mostly other powerful men, who were allegedly secretly exploiting young girls, and then sold that manufactured “brand” … [Read more...] about New Hulu documentary reveals dark discoveries about Victoria’s Secret
Woman discovering note from dad 9 years after his death warms hearts
A resurfaced note a beekeeper left his children over nine years ago, has gone viral after his daughter found it in his beekeeping equipment and shared it on social media. In a post shared on Twitter last Monday, the woman, Amy Clukey, explained that her dad died of lung cancer about nine years ago, but before passing wrote a note that he hoped one of his children would later find. The note said: "I hope this note is found by one of my children who is curious about beekeeping. Beekeeping is actually pretty easy and you can learn everything online. " Bees make more products than just honey and as a hobby, it can be a source of extra income $$$. So don't be afraid, have courage. Good Luck. Love Dad." According to Petpedia , there's a 2.96 million decline in honey bee colonies over the years in the US, and there are 81 million western honey bee hives globally. The bee population in 2019 consisted primarily of wild bees, and North Dakota has the highest honey … [Read more...] about Woman discovering note from dad 9 years after his death warms hearts
