The intelligent donkey
To most people, the term intelligent donkey is an oxymoron. The general perception is that donkeys are the epitome of stubbornness and stupidity. People often disparagingly refer to not so intelligent people as donkeys. Unfortunately, the donkey has been a victim of falsehoods and canards. In fact, donkeys have been man’s companion since the time immemorial and they have been the poor man’s best friend. The donkey has served as the beast of burden and as the poor man’s horse, and even provided milk for the nutrition of poor children. Donkey’s milk closely resemblances breast milk as compared with that of the cow, the sheep and the goat. The donkey survives by foraging marginal shrubs and hence is not a burden on the owner. A donkey is the smartest equine on earth and is quite independent in its thinking patterns. A donkey assesses the situation before panicking or taking flight. Donkeys have been used for the protection of smaller farm animals, such as goats and sheep, from … [Read more...] about The intelligent donkey
Panasonic Lumix G9 Review: Great Camera for Photos, Also Excels at 10-bit 4K Videos
Panasonic has long been one of the most notable camera makers in the world. In India, ever since broadcast cameras made way for more versatile DSLRs and mirrorless ones, Panasonic has been a bit-part player at best. Nevertheless, Panasonic’s present crop of cameras make compelling cases for themselves. Take, for instance, their video offerings with the Lumix GH5 – even in a market dominated by Sony, the Lumix GH5 is widely regarded as a great videography mirrorless camera for professionals and advanced casual shooters, alike. On the flipside of the coin, meanwhile, lies the Panasonic Lumix G9 – a flagship mirrorless camera that borrows a lot from the GH5 but focuses more on photography instead. Despite being about two years old, the Panasonic Lumix G9 was launched in India only this May, 2020. It is also a rather unique one – instead of using a full-frame sensor (which the newer Panasonic Lumix S5 now features), the G9 comes with a 20.3-megapixel Live MOS micro four-thirds sensor … [Read more...] about Panasonic Lumix G9 Review: Great Camera for Photos, Also Excels at 10-bit 4K Videos

Udupa festival — A meeting point for artistes
Girdhar Udupa is an exponent of the ghatam, that is accorded the status of an upa pakkavadhyam (secondary accompanying instrument) in Carnatic music concerts, but the bi-annual festival launched by the young musician four years ago is among the finest in the country. The three-day event usually presents Hindustani, Carnatic and fusion performances and sees a huge turnout despite being ticketed. The fourth edition of the festival was held recently at the Chowdiah Hall, and opened with the percussion ensemble comprising Pt. Yogesh Samsi on the tabla, Mattanur Sankarankutty Marar on the chenda, and Bengaluru Amrit on the kanjira. An unusual combination, it was interesting to see how each instrument conveyed the same theme differently. Percussion has always occupied centre stage at the event, where greats such as Zakir Hussain, Umayalpuram Sivaraman and Karaikudi Mani have performed earlier. Next was sarod maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan’s performance. The veteran musician paired up with … [Read more...] about Udupa festival — A meeting point for artistes
Making waves for Malaysia
CONSISTENTLY spending up to five hours a day in training sessions has produced positive outcomes for national swimmer Steve Khiew Hoe Yean. Save for Sunday, his days are filled with morning and afternoon training sessions in the pool – a routine that has propelled him to the top of the national crop, with him holding the 400m and 800m freestyle, as well as the 200m backstroke, national records. He set the new national record in the 400m freestyle on June 19 at the World Aquatics Championships held in Budapest, Hungary. UM aims for more high-impact research
IN academia, the impact of one’s research work can be assessed in a number of ways, one of which is the number of citations garnered. The higher the citations for a research paper, the more impactful and credible one’s research is, said Universiti Malaya (UM) vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Hamdi Abd Shukor. He was commenting on the varsity’s electrical and electronic research, which has earned the highest scores among Malaysian universities for citations per paper (100%) and h-index (96.4%) in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2022. “An indication of our research being impactful is when it becomes a reference to other researchers. We take this as an acknowledgement that our Strategic Plan and our Transformation Plan are guiding us in the right direction,” Prof Mohd Hamdi said in a recent press release. To ensure the work of its researchers is relevant and impactful to the larger global community, the varsity has taken a number of initiatives to enhance its … [Read more...] about UM aims for more high-impact research
Indians Fail to Impress at Athletics Meet in Kazakhstan
Discus thrower Navjeet Kaur Dhillon failed to impress, though she won a gold, in the Qosanov Memorial Athletics Meet here on Saturday, putting a question mark over her Commonwealth Games selection. Dhillon won the event with a best throw of 56.24m. She had won gold in the National Inter-State Championships (June 10-14) in Chennai with a best effort of 55.67m. Dhillon was included in the 36-member Indian athletics team on June 16, with the rider of “subject to guidelines achieved in Kazakhstan” against her name. The CWG qualifying guidelines prepared by Athletics Federation of India (AFI) is 58.00m for women’s discus throw. It is to be seen what the AFI will do in case of Dhillon, who had hurled the discus past the CWG qualifying standard with an effort of 58.03m while winning gold in the Indian Grand Prix in Bhubaneswar in May. The AFI had included five more athletes — high jumper Tejaswin Shankar, marathoners Srinu Bugatha and Anish Thapa, heptathlete Swapna Barman and … [Read more...] about Indians Fail to Impress at Athletics Meet in Kazakhstan
Florida emerges as key battleground in state-by-state abortion fight
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The U.S. Supreme Court's abortion decision is expected to make Florida an epicenter of the state-by-state fight over the issue in the coming months, raising the stakes for abortion rights advocates in the November election and complicating effortsw by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis to manage both his statewide and national political fortunes. Within hours of the court's decision, access to abortion emerged as a major fault line in America's divisive cultural battles. Thirteen conservative states with "trigger bans" will outlaw abortion within 30 days - and the procedure could soon be prohibited in several others. Lawmakers in heavily Democratic northern and western states are promising to become safe havens for women who want an abortion but are banned from receiving one at home. But in Florida, where residents in a half-dozen relatively liberal urban counties are continually locked in political duels with the conservatives who dominate much of the rest of … [Read more...] about Florida emerges as key battleground in state-by-state abortion fight
