Dr. Abraar Karan, an infectious disease doctor at Stanford, suffered the same fate as many people in January. Despite being vaccinated and boosted, he had COVID-19 during the surge of the highly infectious omicron variant of the coronavirus. Then, in May, he performed a routine test one day before work and found himself infected with the coronavirus yet again. Earlier in the pandemic, scientists held out the hope that “ hybrid immunity ” — the dual protection afforded by having been both infected with the virus and vaccinated against it — would provide the strongest shield against subsequent reinfection. The theory largely held true for versions of the virus that were less infectious than omicron. But when omicron and its super infectious subvariants came along, the strength and durability of that immunity became far less certain. These days, even vaccinated and boosted people who were infected as recently as January’s omicron surge are finding themselves testing positive … [Read more...] about One COVID expert’s reinfection shows why ‘hybrid immunity’ may no longer be possible

London kids to be offered polio vaccine boosters amid fears of virus comeback
LONDON — Every child in London between the ages of 1 and 9 should be offered a booster shot of the polio vaccine, U.K. health authorities have said, as doctors warn that it threatens to make a comeback. The British Health Security Agency said Tuesday it had detected polio viruses from sewage water in eight of the U.K. capital’s 32 boroughs. Although the agency has not found anyone infected with the virus, the news came as a shock in Britain , which was declared polio-free in 2003 and had its last confirmed case in 1984. In an effort to prevent a potential outbreak, the government introduced a public health campaign this week that said booster shots should be offered to children between the ages of 1 and 9. The rate of vaccination for polio is lower in the capital than the rest of the country. The World Health Organization target for polio vaccination is 95%. London is at 86.7%. “What’s worrying is that it has been transmitting in the community,” Dr. Deepti … [Read more...] about London kids to be offered polio vaccine boosters amid fears of virus comeback
The New Missionary Outlook
WHEN, a few years ago, the generosity of Mr. Alfred Mosely sent several English teachers on a tour in the United States, an American teacher contributed to a New York paper her impressions of those visitors whom chance had led to her own school. Her ungrudging tribute to their various excellent qualities reached a climax in her exclamation of delighted surprise: ‘So different from the teachers in Dickens!’ The discovery that Mr. Squeers is scarcely a type of the present-day English schoolmaster and that the methods of Dotheboys Hall do not fairly represent modern English pedagogics may appear somewhat belated. But one cannot very well describe this school-teacher’s mental attitude as exceptional, when one remembers how many people, otherwise well-informed, still derive from the same source their ideas about foreign missions and foreign missionaries. By many intelligent persons Mrs. Jellyby’s projects for the enlightenment of Borrioboola-Gha are taken as representing the real character … [Read more...] about The New Missionary Outlook
Research Says Universal Vaccination Is Required To Stop Future COVID-19 Waves
Researchers at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health who analysed the transmission dynamics of SARS-CoV-2 variants have discovered shared traits linked to transmissibility and immune evasion. Their findings highlight the need for more proactive planning and preparedness for future variants of concern (VOCs), including the development of a universal vaccine that can block SARS-CoV-2 infection as well as prevent severe disease. As with many places, by February 2022, South Africa had experienced four distinct pandemic waves caused by the original (or ancestral) SARS-CoV-2 virus and three VOCs–Beta, Delta and Omicron. “These repeated pandemic waves have been driven by new VOCs that erode prior immunity from either infection or vaccination, increase transmissibility or a combination of both,” explains study author Wan Yang, PhD, assistant professor of epidemiology at Columbia Mailman School. “Although laboratory and field studies provide insights into variant … [Read more...] about Research Says Universal Vaccination Is Required To Stop Future COVID-19 Waves

Invasive blue crayfish that reproduce prolifically discovered in Texas
An invasive crayfish species that can reproduce around 1,000 eggs up to five times a year has been detected in Texas, according to state officials. Scientists from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley collected several specimens of the Australian redclaw crayfish ( Cherax quadricarinatus ) in the Brownsville area this year, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) said in a statement. Between January and February, the researchers collected three specimens from an apartment complex pond that connects to a nearby resaca—bodies of water found in parts of Cameron County that are former channels of the Rio Grande. After these findings, TPWD aquatic biologist Archis Grubh examined several sites in the area in July, finding an additional three redclaw crayfish , which are also known as tropical blue crayfish, among other names. Prior to these sightings, this crayfish had been officially reported only once before in the state. In 2013, an individual filed a report to … [Read more...] about Invasive blue crayfish that reproduce prolifically discovered in Texas
The New Novels
ALTHOUGH the thing which Mr. Kipling is doing possesses such immediate significance as to hamper any cool judgment upon his measure of success, the place of honor for the year in English fiction seems indisputably to belong to Puck of Pook’s Hill. 1 It may be possible that merely as a piece of abstract literature this group of short stories will not ultimately fill the high position which now appears its due. Contemporary rating can never be infallible. But after all, this is of minor importance, since no tarnishing finger of time, no fading glamour, no change of taste, can alter the fact that in conceiving and carrying out such a plan the author proves his own claim to permanent greatness. With all his glitter (which we once feared might degenerate into glorified journalism), with all his restless flitting from land to land, his experimenting, his weakness for panache,—his Sousa moments, so to speak, — looking back upon his career it is now plain that he, the man, has been … [Read more...] about The New Novels
From Olympics Failure to Silver at Commonwealth, Murali Sreeshankar’s Leap of Faith
On so many occasions has long jumper Murali Sreeshankar finished between fifth and seventh position in his nascent international career from junior to the senior level that the Indian national champion did not get fazed by finding himself at the now familiar seventh spot in the 2022 Commonwealth Games here. The 23-year-old from Palakkad in Kerala had recently finished seventh in the 2022 World Athletics Championships. He had done the same in the World Indoor Athletics, was placed fifth in the World Junior Athletics and several national and international events and, therefore, Sreeshankar was not worried about finding himself in the same position on Thursday. CWG 2022 – FULL COVERAGE | IN-DEPTH | INDIA FOCUS | OFF THE FIELD | IN PHOTOS | MEDAL TALLY The long jumper went on to win a historic maiden silver in slightly chilly and windy conditions, bettering the bronze that Suresh Babu had bagged in 1978 Edmonton, Canada.
