AUSTIN, Texas — The sister of a 9-year-old girl killed in the Uvalde school rampage tearfully pleaded on Thursday with Texas lawmakers to pass gun safety legislation and questioned why so many security measures failed. “I’m here begging for you guys to do something,” said Jazmin Cazares, whose young sister Jacklyn was one of 19 children killed in the 80 minutes the gunman spent inside Robb Elementary School on May 24 before police stormed the classroom and killed him. ONTARIO, Calif. (AP) — Family members, friends and members of law enforcement attended a funeral Thursday for two Southern California police officers slain earlier this month while investigating a report of a possible stabbing. El Monte Police Department Officer Joseph Santana, 31, and Cpl. Michael Paredes, 42, were fatally shot June 14 outside a suburban motel east of Los Angeles. A procession of police cars from agencies across the state escorted hearses carrying the officers' caskets from El Monte to Ontario, where hundreds packed Toyota Arena for the memorial service. Embattled Texas Police Chief Pete Arredondo has resigned from his seat in the Uvalde City Council, roughly a month after being sworn in to the position . The Uvalde Leader-News was the first to report on Arredondo’s resignation plans early Saturday afternoon. Uvalde city leaders said they received his official letter of resignation late Saturday afternoon after learning the news from the local paper.
