Cyberattack forces Iran steel company to halt production
One of Iran’s major steel companies said on June 27 it was forced to halt production after being hit by a cyberattack, apparently marking one of the biggest such assaults on the country’s strategic industrial sector in recent memory. The state-owned Khuzestan Steel Company said experts had determined the plant had to stop work until further notice “due to technical problems” following “cyberattacks.” The company’s website was down on Monday. The company’s CEO, Amin Ebrahimi, claimed that Khuzestan Steel managed to thwart the cyberattack and prevent structural damage to production lines that would impact supply chains and customers. “Fortunately with time and awareness, the attack was unsuccessful,” the semiofficial Mehr news agency quoted Ebrahimi as saying, adding that he expected the company’s website to be restored and everything to return to “normal” by the end of Monday. A local news channel, Jamaran, reported that the attack failed because the factory happened to be … [Read more...] about Cyberattack forces Iran steel company to halt production

From Semiconductor to Gaming, Applications of 5G Will be Huge in India
Since finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s announcement of 5G rollout by private telecom operators in this year’s Budget, speculations have been made on how the technology would change the digital landscape of India. There is a clear demand for improved and better infrastructure related to the 5G rollout. But in the 5G era, things cannot stay the same as they were in the 4G period. For example, to lay fibre or put up other infrastructure, telecom carriers must pay different amounts of money in different states. But most of the time, clearance for infrastructure deployment takes a longer time. So, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is working on a nationwide right of way (RoW) site for speedier infra approvals to ensure that these issues do not arise with 5G. 5G and Semiconductor Recently in a report released by the India Electronics and Semiconductor Association (IESA), it was predicted that the introduction of 5G in India will raise demand for semiconductors. … [Read more...] about From Semiconductor to Gaming, Applications of 5G Will be Huge in India

New York's Department of Financial Services said Carnival violated a state cybersecurity regulation by failing to use multi-factor authentication that would make it harder for wrongdoers to access its internal network. It also said Carnival failed to report one breach and conduct adequate cybersecurity awareness training for employees. The regulator said the failures caused Carnival to file improper cybersecurity compliance certifications from 2018 to 2020. China’s TikTok Floods America with Ads for Predatory Payday Loan Companies
Advertisers on Chinese-owned TikTok are reportedly using underhanded tactics to promote payday loans that experts say could violate deceptive advertising laws. One expert commented on the ads flooding the platform massively popular with teenagers, saying, “At best, these videos are designed to make you give up information that you shouldn’t that will result in more solicitations. At worst, this is a complete scam designed either to take your money or information for fraudulent purposes.” The New York Post reports that companies are using China’s TikTok to advertise sketchy payday loan businesses on the teen-focused platform in a move that could be in violation of deceptive advertising laws. Some of the ads promise “almost instant” five-figure deposits to customers despite bad credit while others attempt to imply they’re part of government “inflation programs,” utilizing logos from news organizations like CNN. The Epic Back-Scratching Fest Between Blake Master and a Trumpy Billionaire
Arizona Republican Senate candidate Blake Masters has made no secret of his connections to his longtime business partner and biggest political benefactor, billionaire tech investor Peter Thiel. But new reporting shows that Masters can’t seem to quit promoting Thiel businesses on the campaign trail—and that Thiel or Masters can’t seem to stop making questionable in-kind contributions. Masters announced last month that he had left his top positions at two organizations named after Thiel, who has poured more than $10 million of support into the Senate bid. But a Daily Beast review of business, campaign, and tax records reveals that Masters appears still far from severing his shared interests with his mentor. Brendan Fischer, deputy executive director at Documented, told The Daily Beast that the facts demonstrate an inextricable connection. “This further underscores how Masters’ candidacy is almost inseparable from its billionaire backer,” Fischer said. “Thiel helped launch … [Read more...] about The Epic Back-Scratching Fest Between Blake Master and a Trumpy Billionaire
The boy with hearing-impairment who went on to become the Assistant Commissioner of Income Tax in Chennai
When their two-year-old son Shaik Shoeb was diagnosed with hearing loss, Ghouse Basha and Rajiya Begum relocated to Chennai from Nellore in search of a school. Heavy rain and floods bring renewed calls in China for “sponge cities”
BEIJING, June 27 (Reuters): Heavy rain has lashed more than 10 cities in the Chinese province of Shandong since the weekend, inundating streets, disrupting traffic and renewing calls for better drainage in built-up areas where concrete and asphalt trap water. The weather bureau issued thunderstorm alerts on Monday as vehicles in the northeastern province were stranded in waist-deep water, a video posted on the Weibo social media site showed. China's second-most-populous province with more than 100 million people, Shandong has reported disruption to train services since Sunday after it was hit by its first heavy downpours of the rainy season, which began weeks ago in southern China. Every summer, China is prone to floods that trigger landslides and swamp farmlands and cities, where rapid development and urbanisation often block off natural drainage systems, scientists say. Climate change is exacerbating the impact. Weather expert Zhang Jianyun told a climate change and extreme … [Read more...] about Heavy rain and floods bring renewed calls in China for “sponge cities”
