Former Education Secretary Arne Duncan jabbed Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt over a report the EPA chief put through raises for two close aides despite the White House rejecting the salary increases. Duncan, who served under President Barack Obama, made his comments in a Friday tweet. “To all my team who worked with me at the Department of Education for 7 years, I am so sorry I didn't give you raises of $56,765 or $28,130!” he said. “Silly me, I just didn't know that was possible.” The Atlantic reported on Tuesday that Pruitt had gone to the White House last month seeking raises for close aides Sarah Greenwalt and Millan Hupp. He asked that Greenwalt’s salary of $107,435 be increased to $164,200 and Hupp’s pay go from $86,460 to $114,590. He used a provision of the Safe Drinking Water Act to skirt the White House rejection of the salary increases and put through the raises, according to The Atlantic. Obama Education Secretary: ‘Not Sure’ Trump Wants ‘Best-Educated Workforce’
Arne Duncan, who was secretary of education during the Barack Obama administration, said it seems that President Donald Trump does not want "the best-educated workforce." "I’m not sure President Trump wants to have the best-educated workforce. I think it doesn’t play to his authoritarian tendencies," Duncan said Tuesday on CNN’s "New Day," The Washington Post reported. Duncan said that a highly educated workforce would mean that more people would challenge Trump about his policies and claims. "I’m not sure if that’s in his self-interest,” said Duncan, The Post reported. He also criticized the governmental response to school shootings. “I think young people will succeed where we, as adults, have failed. We have failed to keep them safe. We have failed to allow them to grow up free of trauma," Duncan said on "New Day." … [Read more...] about Obama Education Secretary: ‘Not Sure’ Trump Wants ‘Best-Educated Workforce’

Energy and Environment Update for May 11, 2015
Congress has a full two week schedule prior to the Memorial Day recess, and defense programs, the Highway Trust Fund, and trade promotion authority are driving the agenda while energy and tax issues begin to ramp up in earnest. As Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee Chair Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and Ranking Member Maria Cantwell (D-WA) plan to soon introduce their broad bipartisan energy package, they have told their colleagues to submit their legislation in anticipation of the larger package. With a May 7 committee-imposed deadline for bills to be considered for inclusion in the broad energy package, senators from both sides of the aisle introduced a large number of energy bills last week, led by Senator Murkowski, who introduced 17 measures herself. The Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee held a hearing April 30 on 22 energy efficiency bills as panel leadership prepares to introduce a broad energy bill this summer. The hearing is the first of four that the committee … [Read more...] about Energy and Environment Update for May 11, 2015
