Repeated “frivolous” comments by a Texas judge during domestic violence hearings “trivialize” the seriousness of the cases and demonstrate a “deep-seated bias” that requires the recusal of criminal Court-at-Law Judge Reagan Helm in 74 pending cases, the Harris County District Attorney’s Office argues in filings yesterday. The filings cite comments by Helm including his alleged pattern of telling men in such cases that female complainants have them “by the balls,” reports the Houston Chronicle.Helm denies that he has made inappropriate comments and says prosecutors should have talked with him informally rather than filing a recusal motion.“They’re making a mountain out of a molehill and not a very big molehill at that,” the judge tells the newspaper.Helm has been on the bench since 1994. … [Read more...] about DA: Judge’s ‘Deep-Seated Bias’ Requires Recusal in 74 Domestic Violence Cases

Can we really change minds about Ipswich – or is prejudice too deep-seated
Opinion PUBLISHED: 05:30 17 January 2019 Paul Geater It is difficult to persuade some people that there is anything positive about Ipswich . Picture: ARCHANT FILE Archant Much has already been said and written about the comments from Suffolk Coastal councillor Geoff Holdcroft about the “cesspit down the road” which was almost universally seen as dig at Ipswich. John Conyers, setting her up to become the first Muslim woman elected to Congress. No Republicans or third-party candidates ran in Tuesday's District 13 primary race, meaning Tlaib is set to win the seat in November's election and begin serving a full two-year term in January. The special primary race to serve the last two months of Conyers' term was still too close to call as of early Wednesday morning, with Tlaib and Detroit City Council President Brenda Jones were neck and neck. The winner of that race will also run unopposed in November's election. Tlaib, 42, served in the Michigan House from 2009 until 2014. She defeated five other candidates to win the nomination to run for a full term representing the heavily Democratic district, which covers much of Detroit and some of its suburbs. The 89-year-old Conyers was first elected to the House in 1964. … [Read more...] about Tlaib Wins Conyers’ Seat, Set to Become 1st Muslim Woman in Congress
